To: Mr. John Fowler, Penguin News

A pity that instead of commenting on the topics of this well written piece by Chilean journalist, Raúl Sohr, you choose to use more than 50% of the article’s space on presenting the ramblings of anonymous commentators…………..

    http://www.lanacion.cl/el-petroleo-inflama-las-malvinas/noticias/2010-12-18/173732.html#inicio_lista

A primitive move that reduces even more the little journalistic quality that the Penguin News has left.

Not even MercoPress would dedicate half of an article to the ramblings of anonymous posters like “Agent006”, “Jorge”, “Briton”, “I”, “Justin Kuntz” or even that crazy geezer “Think” ;-)

    Ps:
I couldn’t help noticing that Mr.Sohr’s mentions, more than once, that Punta Arenas business to the islands amounted to seven (7) million dollars*….
*(“Punta Arenas factura unos siete millones de dólares anuales por provisiones a las islas”)

But in your comment about his article you write:
(”The loss of up to 11 million US dollars annually suffered by businesses in Punta Arenas.”)

Way to go………+57% increase ; courtesy of Penguin News………….

These translation programmes aren't very good ... but I noticed an excessive use of the word 'kelpers' in the article which demeans the author!

Other than that it didn't seem to say very much really.

Typical small scale journalism....not very much to write about....and not very good.

We had a murder the other day outside a pub....you would have thought it was the single greatest event to happen in the towns history the way the Town Crier Journalists set about it (with the usual punctuation errors).

    You say:
“I noticed an excessive use of the word 'kelpers' in the article which demeans the author!”

    I say:
    Why???
The author does nothing else than using the centuries old denominative for the inhabitants of the Islands.
Used by the English, the South-Americans and the Islanders themselves.

Me personally, and the few Islanders I know, consider the appellative “Kelper” an attractive and positive one.
In stark contraposition to the derogatory British minted “Bennie” nickname……

The fantasy of the word “Kelper” being pejorative seems to come from the fantasies of a certain Mr. Justin Kuntz”
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Kelpers

In short, For us South Americans and Islanders; calling a Kelper a Kelper is as insulting as calling a Gypsy a Gypsy, a Muslim a Muslim or an Englishman an Englishman
    As the present article proves...............

Surprisingly I go with Think on the Kelper bit- doesnt bother me at all.It is a bit old fashioned today and seems to have largely dissappeared though and we are more generally termed “Islanders” now. Does Porteno bother someone from Buenos Aires? Neither did Benny - we thought it was a bit of a laugh - and called the servicefolk -“whennies” in exchange.(When I was in Germany/Belize/HongKong etc). Nice to see a reasoned article about the Islands though.

Who cares what the Falkland Islanders are called or what they call themselves, and who cares what the name for the Falkland islands is in Spanish or any other language.

The main thing is the Falklands are British and will remain so until the Falkland Islanders decide otherwise.

13 Your poor grasp of the English language is letting you down again. The term Londonistan refers to the large number of people of Pakistani descent who have settled in London. A minority of these people, taking advantage of our age old reputation for kindness and tolerance, have turned to plotting acts of terrorism throughout the World. The term Londonistan isn't meant to imply/suggest that London is the new Capital of Pakistan, that remains Islamabad. Here ends the Geography lesson.

Would be nice if some other inhabitants from the Archipelago (WestisBest, Monty69, Isolde, etc.) could spare a minute to give their opinion and settle this matter once and for all.

I am, as a Patagonian, pretty tired of being called a “racist” by a fundamentalist Scottish internet warrior as Mr. Justin Kuntz, who never has set foot in Patagonia, for using a Patagonian word in a Patagonian context.

There is a mistake: kelp (genus Macrocystis sp.) is currently known as “cachiyuyo” along both Chilean and Argentinian shores. Hence, the translation for kelper would be “cachiyuyero”, but this is not used anywhere in Latin America as far as I am aware in relation to the islanders.
In turn, the term “kelper” arose because the islands are surrounded by kelp

    @27
Doh! Isn't the Falkland Islands a British Overseas Territory? The UN believes so, and the word 'British' might just give the game away regarding our presence in here. Frankly, I'd have thought that was fairly obvious, but then Argentines don't seem to recognise the bleeding obvious, or reality for that matter.

For the record, when I swore allegiance to the Queen when I was attested into the British Army, as an Englishman I would have readily given my life to protect Wales and the Welsh, or Scotland and the Scottish, or indeed any BOT and BOT Islanders, from an invader like Argentina.

You just have no concept of what it means to be British, whether British English, or British (Other); we are all Islanders; you on the other hand are just liars, thieves, and corrupt, with a big yellow streak up your collective backs.

We don't need to convince you, the round up your arse as you run away should do that.

Kelper word, like some other denomination that the Brits used to identify people in their DIFFERENT colonies, as in this case in the Malvinas Islands Argentinas, are Kelpers, New Zealand Kiwis, Australia aussie, etc. may have a Uk passport , but for the Brits, they have always be second class citizens in Uk. I would like to see a real working Kelper Uk, can only work and stay up to two years, and no more! So the Brits treat their people “of their colonies”Nice ........!!!!

So size means everything to an Argentinean does it? it means sod all to be honest. Argentina is a large country, I grant you that, but it has given nothing to the world except for the Tango, the UK can boast a much greater achievement.

They are your mines, care to have them back, after-all, it was Argentina who broke numerous laws in 82 when they scattered them all over without marking them on a map.

Argentina isn't rich, far from it, which is why the IMF are avoiding you at all costs.

The only truly beautiful part of Argentina would have to be in Patagonia, you know the place, after all you stole it from Chile..

While you rant, the drill keeps turning, oil will be found. This could be a problem, but to ease the burden, i suggest that the islanders gain full independence, then pay the UK for protection, just like Brunei.

This would stop all attempts by your government regarding the Falklands, and the British will remain where they are.

    Something to think about.

Argentinians actually love the British and want to be accepted within the Anglo-Saxon world. Of course history makes this quite impossible and they now resent and hate themselves for their failures and inadequacies. Perhaps the Falklands are used by Argentina as a way of interacting with the British people almost like a child craving attention. I have seen an Argentinian on here describe the Islands as “ugly”. Could it be that the child, that is Argentina, only wants the Islands because it knows it cannot ever have them.

    #49 thank you,

Well we see “Think” hiding behind an anonymous pseudonym, trawling the Internet to try and pick up dirt on people to use to intimidate them from not posting on forums like Mercopress. It isn't just me you've done it to, there are several people here.

Strangely anyone who bests Think in logical argument is subjected to this, so that rather than replying he can resort to an ad hominem personal attack.

And we have the extreme of someone finding out my home number and ringing myup and threatening my mother, wife and children.

Hands up anyone who actually thinks that was his first day on Mercopress? Or is he like many Argentines it seems, someone who comes back under a variety of pseudoyms to agree with each other. And projects his own failings - Mercopress are free to examine my IP history I only ever use the one name but that hasn't stopped Think and his ilk of accusing me of using other identities. Don't judge others by your own low standards.

And check back matey, I didn't post that picture of the London demo for the rights of the Chagossians. I commented after it was posted. Lying again and again and again.

Sorry mate but if we are 14.000 kms from your Angola-Sasson world and you came here in 1806-1807 and as you couldn’t get our love you took in 1833 our Islands by force to be close to us.

And you behave like an abandoned woman for her husband who cannot get him but takes his car and use the kids to call his attention, etc.

Is quite logic you have an obsession with us. Are we so cool?

The only one that seems to want to be accepted and actually love us are you mate.

In fact we want to send you back to your mother’s house but you refuse it.

But i wouldn't expect anything less from an Argentinean homunculus like yourself. If you ever grow a pair, then i would happily meet you face to face with my wife beside me. Where was she from again???

As for ”We bring freedom to the Island, Economy prosperity, thank to us people can point them in a map (no sure really) tourism, etc, etc and all the rubbish you can imagine”

Would this be the same freedom they received in 82? Somehow i don't think they would wish that sort of vermin in there country again. What Economic prosperity are you referring to?? I have witnessed nothing prosperous from Argentina, I don't think there are many people alive now a days who will remember when Argentina was a rich nation.

The world hates the British do they?? tell me, Mr Dim, how many countries have you visited in your life time. Ever been to Europe? Asia? Africa? I don't think so. See post #2 on that thread, posted by xbarilox, so no I didn't post that picture, I merely commented on it. So again what I posted was accurate, I didn't post that picture I commented after it had been posted.

Why do you do you have to lie Think? Why do you have to go to such lengths to try and assinate my character? All the while hiding behind an anonymous pseudonym. You don't like it when people catch you lying and the truth of the matter is you're not particularly good at it.

You lie and you lie and you lie again, then when you're caught lying, red handed you spray accusations around like confetti to cover up the fact you're a compulsive liar.

You're a liar, a cyberstalker, very. very creepy and with an obsession for root vegetables. I think I can guess why.

    Nico.

I know the correct spelling, Thanks. My english skills are perfectly fine. Spelling mistakes are the result of pressing a wrong key. I know how to spell morning.

If you look at your keyboard you will notice that T and R are directly beside eachother.

They are also a result of me having dyslexia.

Your own English skills aren't as good as you seem to think they are. Delusions of grandeur, perhaps? It's easy enough to spell check your words if you have the time or wish to. However, you often have a hard time stringing sentences together in a way which is grammatically correct.

I can see many examples in this thread alone. As you're going to become my “teacher” i shall strive to point out your own mistakes, it seems to be a game you enjoy.

“Better you take care of Londonistan”

“If I would be racist I should tell you that”

“And my brother also something like this”

    “Here my contribution”

“Your giving to the world is like our invasion to the Bennies”

    “Economy prosperity”

“thank to us people can point them in a map ”

    “no sure really”

    “etc, etc”

    “Well here our real contribution”

“Middle East may be there will accepted your contribution to the world.”

“The world is getting little and little”

“Why the world hates British if they are so cool”

    “any answer?”

“Is quite logic you have an obsession with us”

“Bloody I forgot and you where searching”

    “I get piss off”

I look forward to our next lession.

Its only logical considering the amount of time you must spend typing “Islam, Britain and extremism” into either Google or Youtube, bet you even have them bookmarked so you can deploy them in some bizarre attempt to try an argument? :)

Nothing, but for Mr. Rhaurie-Craughwell makes sense as he is calling me a liar, as you can see below quoting parts of his posts:

    --------Start RC Q -------------------
“I know very well that 99% of what you said is Bullshit...have you forgotten I stumbled upon your Youtube profile quite by accident...does your Username: Nicodume ring a bell”

“I see you've gone silent on your heritage now hahah”

    ----------End RC Q---------------

So he is convinced that I’m Nicodume and insist on it and as he has not brain at all, he is using the racist stuff to support his point that I’m a racist. Because I use the name Mohammed to refer to brits when he from the very beginning was using Dumbkampf, Spanish, Italian, Nazis, etc.

“Well done Dumbkampf with such idiotic logic you've just de-legitimized your own right of existance in America!”

And as he is a racist in the closet and a Big mouth coward who cannot stand or back all the rubbish he says, I thought to make his sitcom more interesting adding few Quids.

So I challenge him to accept my bet.

    That’s it.

The coward never responded and is eluding the answer with more rubbish.

    : )

@35Martino, why do you want us out of the south Atlantic, Martino?
Do you just want no competition while you plunder Antarctica?
We were in the South Atlantic before you were, so you leave and we'll stay here. oh and by the way, when is your country going to give back the lands that it stole from Paraguay and Chile? -answer please.
@NicoDin,Nicholas, l'd just call it a day if l were you.All your arguments have been shot to shreds. have a mug of coffee and curl up with a good book. ..........you can't win here.

Just want to add a quick supporting comment to my fellow countrymen and women. Kelper is and always will be a name we refer to our selves because as someone already said we are surrounded by that magical stuff called kelp. Better we are surrounded by that then our bickering argentine neighbors. If they spent as much time helping their own people out of poverty as much as they seem to spend the time condemning a people who have more right to be on these islands than they do the world would be a much nicer place to live in.

The one major difference we islanders have with Argentina is that we never murdered any indigenous people to settle our homeland. You know it would have been so much nicer if Argentina was where Chile is and Chile was our closet neighbor. The Chileans are a very decent people and we Islanders have been proud to have known them for as long as we have. Maybe that is the reason for this difference of opinion. Maybe it is correct Argentines are nothing but spoiled brats and are jealous of the Chilean Falkland Island friendship. To think if you were the goody goody chaps you could have been enjoying our way of life as well. Never mind a great opportunity lost.

I did think it a little odd to fill half the article with anonymous comments, but I guess Chile's played its part in the dispute, so it is quite interesting to see Chilean opinions about the matter.

Although, if that was the aim, I don't think this article (mercopress) presented a particularly balanced view of the comments. After reading through a few pages of the comments on the original article, there seems to be quite a divide among the Chilean posters, some favouring the Islanders' position and others favouring Argentina's, but the only pro-Argentina comment selected for this mercopress piece was from an Argentine poster.

Don't get me wrong, I support the Falkland islanders and their right to not be forced into being an Argentine colony, but I don't think that this piece gives a true representation of the divided feelings expressed in the comments.

Well seems you have resolved the problem mate.

So we only need to invade “Isla de Pascua” http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isla_de_Pascua
Then claim it for Argentina and then we switch on.

Kelpers go to Isla de Pascua and Argies to Malvinas, you will close to your nice decent Chileans neighbours and the new population will save you to be close of the nasty Argies.

Where do we have to sing?

By the way for few Quids we will exchange the islands for the whole Chile if you want.

The correct symbol is USD (currency code).

But here we write in both ways as you can see here in a business publication ambito.com
    http://www.ambito.com/noticia.asp?id=567864

And the symbol $ is Spanish from the Spanish dollar in the beginning used 2 pillars representing the pillars of Hercules. The Spanish currency was in circulation in US’s territory before the existence of the US dollar.

So we right as we wish haha.

    I just said that...

I never once said that the $ symbol is not the sign for the spanish dollar.

Still doesn't make ”U$s” a real abbreviation of USD.

After an “expres visit” to the British Falkland Islands, Mr. Sohr, a Chilean journalist, has written a good wishy-washy article about that distant land situated in the South Atlantic. He calls the “Malvinas” the Falklands because, so he claims, it's the “Spanish” term for those Islands. Indeed, the term “Malvinas” is a translation from the French word “Malouines.” If anything it's a gallicism! And let's call a spade a spade: “Malvinas argentinas” is just a silly Argentinean fixation. The so-called “Malvinas” are as real as Sancho Panza's Insula Barataria.
Thanks God, Mr. Sohr didn't call Stanley, “Puerto Argentino.” Having been there several times, I can certify that Stanley is as “argentino” as is North Waziristan.

It didn't occur to Mr. Sohr to really interview a Chilean resident, of the 250 he says are living in the Falklands. Neither he thought of writing about the old Chile-Falklands friendship. He called repeatedly the Islanders “kelpers,” using the antiquated Argie pejorative term. Mr. Sohr lost no time in repeating cliches from the Argentinean colonialist glossary.

A question should be raised: For which “La Nacion” newspaper does he write? For the one situated in Santiago or the other, located in Buenos Aires? It is not at all clear to the neutral, objective reader.

    Saludos, Philippe

“ 89% of Chileans supported the British in 1982, because they knew that if successful in the Falklands, General Galtieri’s next step would have been to invade Chile.”

I see no evidence of this at all.

It is totally unrelistic to think that Argentina would invade another mainland South American country, or indeed any territory or island owned by another mainland South American country.

I think military dictatorships need an external enemy to divert public attention onto when internal matters get difficult. Argentina used and continues to use the Falklands/Malvinas in this way.

But today Kirchner does not run a dictatorship and the military are not running her. It would take a VERY foolhardy democratic leader to invade by force of arms a neighbouring South American state. The Argentinan government are not boxed into this corner even with the present inflation rate, unemployment etc. so, if the question were asked of Chileans today, much less than 89% would be worried about invasion. This might be different, however, if Chile had lots of oil and Argentina had none.

@Geoffward ,yes there was indeed a plan of the argentine armed forces to invades the south of Chile if the Falkland campaing was succesfull, that why the chilean armed forces gave intellegence information to GB and USA ,their aim was that argentina should loose or not win the war.
Also during the war the argentine armed forces gave information of their movements to the state department of USA ,up till the moment USA sided with GB.
Of course this info was sent to GB.
