Repsol-YPF planned exploration for hydrocarbons in the Malvinas basin, off Tierra del Fuego has suffered a major public relations setback following on the Buenos Aires press revelation that the two vessels contracted for the job not only are UK flagged but also have links with the current oil exploration round in Falkland Islands’ waters. Disclaimer & comment rulesBusiness is business and Repsol-YPF know this; they clearly want to work with the best. This is more evidence that the Falkland Islands are used only for domestic political purposes.
Feb 21st, 2011 - 07:54 am - Link - Report abuse 0RKH has also announced the spuding of the first (secnod really) appraisal well of Sea Lion. All good news for UK oil exploration companies and associated support companies.
Lol and a hahah! Everyone knew it would only be a matter of time before Argentina's Symbolic decree and groin thrusting over hydrocarbon exploration in the Falklands was shown to be little more than belligerent posturing for domestic consumption.
Feb 21st, 2011 - 08:19 am - Link - Report abuse 0So will Argentina put her words where her mouth is and really cancel a multi million $ project to explore for Hydrocarbons just because the vessels are UK flagged?
Or alternatively, they're more likely to seize the vessels, then they won't have to pay for them....

Feb 21st, 2011 - 10:17 am - Link - Report abuse 0He knew about it before hand anyway. The Argie gvt don't give a toss about the Islands. They just use them as a domestic political football and this story proves it. They don't want to take the matter to the ICJ as they will then lose a card that they can play to get themselves out of a hole.

Without the British flag
20/02/11
The company YPF said in a statement that the campaign that the company will start in the Malvinas Basin will not be a British flag vessel YPF also clarified that the ship Stena Drillmax remains from the last quarter of 2010 on the coasts of Brazil and not in Mar del Plata.
Clarín published yesterday a complaint by former Congressman Mario Cafiero indicating that the ship operates in national waters under the British flag. YPF also said the tugs to accompany the ship moored at Mar del Plata carrying flags from other countries.
In all fairness, the Stena Drillmax is not a British Flagged vessel, it's a Bermudan flagged vessel.
Feb 21st, 2011 - 03:57 pm - Link - Report abuse 0But as Bermuda (like Gibraltar and the Falklands) still wants to be a British Overseas Territory then it is an easy mistake to make. Especially as the Bermudan merchant fleet use the national flag as their ensign (which is the red duster with Bermuda's crest on it), so unless there is enough wind to blow the flag out, the two look very similar.
Incidentally, the support vessel for Stena Drillmax would also be flying a defaced red ensign, as it is registered in the Isle of Man (which is a Crown Dependancy rather than a BOT).
Neither of the ships are BRITISH flagged, so that's all right then? Flags of convenience don't count (hence the convenience)?
This is not a surprise. This is the Kirchnerist way, say one thing but do another. She's anti-Imperialist but her daughter studies in New York instead of studying in our universities, she's ani-Capitalist but she's filthy rich and owns properties everywhere, she's anti-British but loves the Pound Sterling.
Feb 21st, 2011 - 04:29 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Obviously JB doesn't read the articles on mercopress in much detail:
Feb 21st, 2011 - 07:41 pm - Link - Report abuse 0the vessel belongs to to Stena DrillMax an Aberdeen company which is one of the leaders in the industry for this kind of tasks
-Aberdeen as in the UK :)
”support vessel, Normand Baltic (Isle of Man flagged) (DWT 4.100 tons) belongs to the Norwegian company Solstad Offshore ASA, which is allegedly involved in FALKLANDS’ oil exploration logistics activities
-Hydrocarbon exploration as in the Falklands....apparently your great and glorious leader this time last year was meant to introduce economic sanctions” against companies in Argentina who also participated or aided Falklands Hydrocarbon Activities.

If you look at the most southerly dot you will find the Stena drillmax....who is the current contractor?.....Repsol.....Do'h! :)

I - I think you should get rid of CFK for corruption and incompetence. These things have a more detrimental effect on the average Argentine than the activity on some Islands that have nothing to do with you.

Feb 22nd, 2011 - 04:14 am - Link - Report abuse 0Surely because it was in Swedish......
Well.... it was in Swedish because I explained the Sassenach at No.12 that Stena Drilling Co. is a Swedish Company.
You get that?
Swedish from Sweden in Sweden…………………………
http://www.stena-drilling.com/sub.asp?m=about&p=about
”Stena Drilling, a wholly owned subsidiary of Stena AB, Gothenburg, Sweden is one of the world's foremost independent drilling contractors.”

Feb 22nd, 2011 - 08:52 am - Link - Report abuse 0But business is business eh, comrade Think?
18 Think:
Feb 22nd, 2011 - 12:40 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The article does not say anything about Stena Drilling Co being a British company.
The article says that the STENA DRILLMAX is a british flagged vessel. Which it is.
STENA DRILLMAX:
Ship Type: Other
Year Built: 2007
Length x Breadth: 229 m X 42 m
DeadWeight: 97000 t
Speed recorded (Max / Average): 93 / 93 knots
Flag: United Kingdom [UK]
Call Sign: 2ALV2
IMO: 9364942, MMSI: 235060864
You will also note if you check the contact page on the stena drilling website that the headquaters is in the UK:
Stena Drilling Ltd.
Ullevi House
Greenbank Crescent
East Tullos
Aberdeen AB12 3BG
Scotland, U.K.
Tel: +44 (0) 1224 401180
Fax: +44 (0) 1224 897089
But yes, it is owned by a very rich Swedish family.
I wonder, lol....If the workers on the ship are Scottish? that would be quite amusing.
My dear JB....you do know that ships can move don't you :) So if it isn't the evil Stena DrillMax then what nearby drill ship prey, are Repsol and YPF going to be drilling with in the Malvinas Basin?
Feb 22nd, 2011 - 02:02 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It wouldn't have escaped your notice that the Stena Drillmax's location is but under a weeks sailing away from the Malvinas Basin and is currently contracted by a company who is contracted to drill in both locations, don't you think that perhaps they intend to sail the ship between locations based upon demand?....D'oh D'oh!
Thinkity winkity
Now where on earth did I say that Stena Drill is a UK company? UK based yes, with UK employees and a UK board of Directors...with UK flagged vessels...Swedish owned yes....But does that somehow make this embarrassing revelation any better..maybe slightly :)
I notice dead silence on the other allegations of the Norwegian owned vessel and its parent companies dirty dealings with the other drilling campaign by both yourself and JB.
Are the sanctions coming any time soon...nope...probably why BHP Billong is still mining quite merrily in Argentina whilst keeping its Falklands Island Oil prospects. :)
There is a limited supply of expertise in the field of deep sea drilling, and unsurprisingly, the UK is well established within it.
Feb 22nd, 2011 - 05:40 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Whether British workers, UK / UK Crown Dependency / BOT Flagged, British operated, British based, or even British owned, perhaps by British shareholders, that is the landscape of the industry, what did a backwater country like Argentina expect?
It wants to isolate itself from anything 'British', but the business it wants is laced with British technology and expertise, and just like its lack of realisation of the reality of the Falkland Islands, it backs itself into yet another an illogical corner and looks stupid.
Well done Argentina, you look like a bunch of bleeding amateurs again.

Feb 28th, 2011 - 03:37 am - Link - Report abuse 0Malvinas basin oil exploration set to go
Malaysia Sun
Tuesday 22nd February, 2011
Deepwater exploration off the coast of Tierra del Fuego in the Malvinas basin is expected to begin before the end of the first half of 2011.
The Argentine company, Repsol-YPF, said plans are afoot to invest an initial US$100 million in exploring the region which is 300 kilometres east of Tierra del Fuego.
The exploration region is known as the Malvinas Basin and is on the edge of Argentina's maritime border with the Falkland Islands.
The company has said it will lead the project with financial backing from Brazil's Petrobras and Argentina's Pan American Energy.
It also said that no UK flagged vessels would be involved in the operations.
