A Falkland Islander will be joining the ranks of the privileged few at the Royal Wedding of the Prince William and Catherine Middleton in Westminster Abbey on April 29.
Member of Legislative Assembly Sharon Halford, along with her husband John, will represent the Falkland Islands as a British Overseas Territory. Other Overseas Territories will also be represented by a Governor or Minister.
She told Mercopress, “It’s a great honor… the evening before we will attend a reception at Lancaster House hosted by the Foreign Secretary and after the wedding ceremony we’ll attend another reception at Lancaster House.”
The code of dress is day dress and hat and gloves, while John will be required to wear either a uniform or morning suit or a lounge suit.
The couple will be transported to the Abbey by coach, arriving at 10am with the ceremony starting at 11am.
MLA Halford was first elected to the Legislative Council from 1993 to 2001 for the Stanley constituency. On November 5, 2009 she was elected to the Legislative Assembly for the Camp (the rural community) constituency.
Asked why she was selected for the very attractive task MLA Halford said, “I was already going to be in the UK for our daughter Sarah’s medal ceremony.”
Their daughter Sarah Halford is a Sergeant with 16 Air Assault and has just completed a tour of Afghanistan where she ran a trauma unit in Lashkagar. Sarah (29) joined the British Forces at the age of 17. She will receive her medal at Colchester Barracks.
MLA Halford and Mr Halford live at San Carlos on East Falkland Islands.
