Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff, 63, returned Monday to Brasilia after spending the weekend in a hospital in Sao Paulo suffering from strong flu and a mild case of pneumonia, according to the presidential office.

“The President returned to Brasilia Monday and will remain in the official residence “Alvorada Palace” with no agenda, and with instructions to rest”, said a presidential spokesperson.

The Syrian-Lebanese hospital in Sao Paulo reported on Sunday night that President Rousseff had been diagnosed with a mild pneumonia and was prescribed with antibiotics.

Suffering from a strong flu, Ms Rousseff decided to travel on the weekend to Sao Paulo for medical attention in the hospital, where according to her advisors she advanced routine medical exams that had been programmed for later this week.

Two years ago Ms Rousseff underwent surgery in Sao Paulo for the extirpation of a lymphoma and was later submitted to four months of chemotherapy. The medial team at the time said she was completely recovered.

This opened the way for former President Lula da Silva to sponsor her as the ruling coalition’s candidate for the October 2010 election.
