“the measure was mainly targeted on a flood of imports from Asia, the US and the EU.”

I guess these 'continents' will get quite upset with Brasil acting like Argentineans.
Expect a whole raft of retaliatory action against Brasil.

Expect nothing to happen, Geoff. You so often make self-assured comments on subjects you know little about. Let go of this.

Hi Forgetit, nice to see you interacting again!

    I hope you are right.
It would be nice to think that the Government of Brasil can do what it wants to block imports from countries/overseas industries, and suffer no repercussions.
But I fear the world is not like this.
At the very least the penalty clauses wil be invoked/inserted, and insurances will be claimed/erected with the premiums priced into the price of the goods.
Will Brasilians stop buying foreign goods? of course not.
Will they pay more for them? - of course.
Is there a future in copying Argentina? - rhetorical.

The fact that Sr Aurelio feel it necessary to say “its fine” is clear evidence that it is not fine. Free trade is championed by net exporters, but is not always the only show in town. Interesting spat.

    @GeoffWard

Sometimes you confused me about your nationality because being European you should know the battles in political and trade arena, causing friction among EU members worst than what happen in Mercosur.

Look fraternity among EU members ha ha
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqovTGjYjM4

In the ‘90 UK tried to ban/restrict the entrance of alcohol and tobacco into Britain from France and other EU members. When the inauguration of the “Le tunnel sous la Manche” (The Channel Tunnel) people jumped from Folkestone to Calais to buy cigarettes and drinks to France what went out of the hands of the Brits. Since then UK is trying to use any legal piece of law to restrict the theses products: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqovTGjYjM4

Another case Dollar bananas: “bananen” between France and Germany.

So life is like this in trade blocks.
“Will they pay more for them? - of course.”

We don’t pay more who say that to you? Europe does all the time this and? Look the friction with China.
Europe was forged using trade barriers and managed trade.

Why we should reach a free trade agreement with the EU if they truly believe in the free trade as a good thing? They should open their market to the world because is good and even the most protectionist country will be allowed to sell to them (because is good). So like in any business you don’t give access to competitors for free if there is not a gain for you. So in the end the trade is managed like always was. Because it is natural attitude for human being to preserve what they got and want even more.

What class of capitalist you are mate?
    : )

    Nico,
you are putting together some good postings just recently.
Might not agree with everything you say, but it is much preferable to the invective that many posters put up on the site.
    Geoff.
