”...his decision to become an Argentine citizen was interpreted by some Falkland Islanders as “an act of treason” and in that spirit he received messages warning him that “if I return to the Islands, I will be shot”...

You'd be willing to kill a civilian for having a different point of view. How insecure and mediocre.

However Peck regretted the whole situation because he never expected his decision to become an Argentine citizen would turn into a political statement. “I did not give up my British citizenry and I have my British passport. I though about it before going ahead but what’s going on is absolutely different, it’s as if I had killed somebody”.

regretted the situation? So as a Falkland Islander, with his family history, he expected to quietly move to Argentina and gain citizenship there in election year, in the middle of June without any political pantomime being made of it! C'mon Jamie you really do live on a different planet. Still you will sell plenty of your half rate paintings there, enjoy the money Christina has given you (probably some of the money supposed to go the Mothers fund) and enjoy the women who like your ex wife will be paid to meet you and suck you in. You have been taken for a ride for the last decade mate and cannot apparently see it. Most people would not have cared about what you did had you been quiet about it, lets face it no one has lamped you one on the football pitch when you pitch up in you argie shirt. Your Dad put his life on the line for your freedom and future, you were free to do what you wanted but pal you have repaid you father in about the worst way possible. I hope you sleep well at night.

Death threats? get a grip man, what people comment on the Internet and what they actually do are worlds apart, look at how many 'death threats' we've collectively recieved in the comments for dribbling Argies on Mercopress for instance. It's sticks and stones Martin, speaking of stones it's good to see you've crawled back out from under yours.

Frankly I find it amusing to see how much publicity Jamie milks from this whilst still beating his breast about how he did it for children and for no other reason, I wonder reaching a certain standard of duplicity is a requirement of his new nationality.

wow for a guy to is acting like he cares so much about is children he seems to have forgotten his Falkland Island child. Fair enough if getting Argentine status will make getting around the country easier for him and his kids but why the hell did he think it was a good idea to do it on Liberation day. Its disrespectful to say the least. All I can say is I hope he got a good payment from it because his work isnt going to be so popular here!

Martin F - put it this way - here we have several Agrntines living - they have quietly obtained their Islands Status to enable them to become full local citizens - no problems - a natural thing to do in the country where you decide to live.
Now ask yourself- how would their families and other Argentines have reacted if any of them had done PUBLICLY- photgraphed alongside the Queen,s representative(that is what the Governor is) and done it on say May 25th or July 9th?
It is not so much WHAT but HOW he did it that has caused a problem for him - he is evidently thicker than even people here thought he was if he did not see that coming!
The real venom towards him is strongest from his close family here! Not surprising considering the insult to his late father.
No doubt he has been well paid with your citizens taxes though!

Oh grow up Marcos, any Falkland Islander can speak out on whatever they choose to just as in any country where there's freedom of speech...and just as in any country where there's freedom of speech you'll get responses to what you choose to say.

    For instance:

one says “the moon is made of cheese”
someone responds “Eh? you're mad as a box of frogs mate”

    or....

one says “The Falklands are British and will remain so”
someone responds “Well said, let me but you a drink chay”

    or...

    one says “Malvinas son Argentinas”
Somone responds (SMACK!) “now pick up your teeth and get the fuck out”

Anyone can speak out, if one choose's to say something that's incredibly offensive they one takes the consequences.

Curious - Is this legal under Argentina law? Does anybody know just how long he has resided in Argentina? “Foreigners may apply for Argentine citizenship if they meet at least two years of continuous residence in Argentina, or if they have rendered services to the Nation.” I do not see any rendered service, other than a photo op for her highness. And how long after applying does it NORMALLY take to receive the citizenship papers?

then you must agree that Patagonians should be given the choice to become British again, and possibly a few million argies who might like to change, leaders, perhaps a new nation can be born [greater Falkland’s perhaps] it might make Argentina a bit smaller, but I’m sure your leader wouldn’t even notice . then again mmmm

    @17 & 24
Marcos, you display complete ignorance of the Falklands if you think that Islanders are somehow being intimidated. Please let me clarify: we are perfectly happy with our situation, proud to be Falkland Islanders and proud of our relationship with Britain.

James Peck is an exceptional character who will say and do whatever he thinks will benefit him most (and sell more of his questionable paintings) at any given moment in time. He has clearly demonstrated a natural ability when it comes to jumping fences - both literally and figuratively - and, to coin an old phrase, wants to have his cake and eat it too.

He has done very well out of the Falklands' government and society over the years, but after his midnight garden-raiding activities appears to realise that we have lost patience with him, so now he has opted to sell his soul for a bit of publicity.

Well, I hope it's worth it. But I can't help but find his mock horror at Islanders' reactions laughable. James knew exactly what he was doing. My sympathy is with his family - his Falklands family - who he has treated so disrespectfully.

As for the rest of the community here - we know that we are much better off without him.

Out of interest, can anyone give a timeline for his standing for election to the Legislature, and any relationship this might have with his vegetable raiding missions?

Did he commit the raid before or after his candidature?

Is there any more information relating to the child(ren) he may have abandoned in the Falklands prior to his Argentine step children, it seems a tangled web he's woven, and he's perplexed it's unwinding around his ears.

For instance, why is access to his Argentine Children any more important than access to his Falklander Child(ren)?

I realise some things are a personal decision, but favouring one child over another is just bad parenting, and trading one set of hostilities and bureaucracy for another set while alienating most of your family in the process is plain stupid reasoning on any level.

Furthermore the Argentine minister denounced before the C24 “the criminal attitude from fanatics who death threatened” the British descendent born in the Malvinas Islands, James Peck, “if he dared return to the Islands”.

Given the facts, “we make British authorities that illegally occupy the Islands responsible for the safety of the Argentine citizen, Señor James Peck, if he wishes to exercise his Argentine rights to return to the occupied Islands”, underlined Timerman

I am a Falkland Islander of 8 generations. I would just like to say that Mr Peck didn't nick the veg because he was starving, he nicked them and was caught because of greed. Veggies are currently very expensive here due to the economic embargos Argentina is inflicting on our country and Mr Peck was in it for a quick buck, I believe selling them to local eateries. He has been given three educational scolarships, all of which he failed. If he chooses to come back to the Islands, he won't be shot or killed, but would be ignored for a while and then get on with life as normal. The thing that has upset people here the most is the day they chose to hand over this birth certificate. Please Argentina, understand we are a country with freedom of speech and the right to self-determiantion. We have decided that we don't want to be Argentine, as a nation that keeps going on about peoples freedoms, accept our choice. The histroy you broadcast to the World is not the truth, no amount of time you tell these tales will make it the truth.

    For its novelty value?

Given the country’s population of 307,006,550, about 37% of the population has one. This means that nearly 2 out of 3 Americans can’t even fly to Canada, let alone travel to anywhere else in the world (new rules allow those with “Passport Cards” to travel to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean and Bermuda, but they are not allowed to be used for international air travel. There are about 3.5 million Americans who have this card.)

    @65

    @65

She did get it right. The falklands are not Argentine territory. They are a disputed British territory.

    I say:

Have you looked yourself at the mirror recently?
You are not precisely an Aryan.................. Are you?

Jamie Peck Oh what the heck.
He did it for his father.
He stole some veg to plant new seed
In an Argentine bed of heather.

Betrayed his family and his friends
Because he could not get his way.
But the last laugh is now on him
The day he gave his freedom away.

Time will tell how well he does
With his new found Argie friends
Know one knows what his future holds
    before this saga ends.

Traitor, Liar , defector and theif
Could not face our local law.
Insted he hides behind Christinas ass
As a coward he deserves no more.

He chose to marry an argentine
    Knowing it would not last
She would never stay on our British soil
Given what her peolpe did in the past.

The ones who will no doubt now suffer
    From this evil spitefull deed.
Is his children brothers and sisters
Who have to live with his selfish greed.

One Day realisation will make a call
And Jamie will wonder what he has done.
Deserting the people that did so much
To make him what he has become.

Bravo, very good. You definately have talent.
l think that James is a very silly boy. lf l was in his situation, maybe l would have gone to a third neutral country, certainly not the enemy.

People who was born in the South Atlantic Department, Tierra del Fuego Province (includes Malvinas) can process its document in the civil registration house in Gdor Campos 1465 Dto 42. Ushuaia. or continue living in a colonial primate system.

Argentina is really rolling out its finest tonight....

If we could add that Luger pistol waving American red neck psychopath from Utah Fernanda-Fierra then we will have a full house :)

@74 & 77 Correcting someone's spelling on a forum is a bit to the right of invoking the Nazis....

A true sign of having nothing else to contribute....

Thinko... explain to the class one more time.... the basis of Argentina's claim to South Georgia .... how did it go again... 'cos we want it...'......

The closest we've had to Think expalining that claim is “it's difficult”.

    There is no reason.
