Hundreds of people were arrested as the worst rioting in a generation spread from London to cities across the length and breadth of England. Read full article
It is very sad. Fortunately it is the few causing trouble and spirits are high amongst the majority of people. The old 'Blitz' spirit infused the communities affected and they were out in force clearing up the mess together and re-establishing community bonds. This will soon be in the past and forgotten for the majority but the punishments given to the criminals will last a lot longer.
It was relatively few areas of London affected, not in the tourist areas and nothing to do with the economic situation.
Interestingly, I saw some articles comparing the situation in Chile with London. Not the reasons because the students in Chile have a legitimate complaint whereas in London the criminals had no motive other than personal greed. The articles were comparing the methods used by the police to deal with the situations.
@4 The positive to come out of this is how united the majority are against this kind of anti-social behaviour. Not too many making excuses for criminal behaviour. It was rebellion without a cause, carried out by greedy people wanting easy-to-sell consumer items. It undermines any sympathy for possible social issues when they coordinated the looting on their Blackberries and I-Phones.
Of course, their are issues at the root of this behaviour to be dissected in time but it has little to do with deprivation and poverty. JMO
@7 Well xbarilox, I do see grammar errors in most of your other comments on other articles

They tried to kick off last night but there was literally police everywhere. That and all the local people now are just chasing them off.
