Other than Soy what could Argentina produce that China doesn't already produce better and cheaper? You can' t rely solely on cheap wine.

Timmerman has got to be one of the stupidest foreign ministers currently with a job. I can't believe he wasn't fired after the debacle with the USA military confiscation.

@2 Argentina has jumped into bed with the US once and that didn't go very well (we got screwed basically). Perhaps it is time to look within the G20 to change the system.

@3 Whilst I am not a fan of Timmerman myself, I think your assessment is rather short-sighted and perhaps a little resentful. Perhaps you should read here: http://www.datamyne.com/blog/?p=972
Additionally, I would also add to the list beef, which I doubt China produces “better and cheaper”. But trade is just part of the equation. With trade comes trust, investments and cooperation on may fields: a concept which the US and the EU are all to happy to apply fairly between themselves whilst marginalising the rest of the world by taking advantage of their privileged position obtained after WWII. You are now looking at the first steps of a new world order.

Timerman must wish to follow CFK, his leader's, constraint - that money IN equals money OUT.

So raw materials flow out of Br, Ar, Pa and Ur; and finished products cascade into these Mercosur countries from China.

Mercosur home industry goes into terminal decline,
foreign industries from the developed world re-locate away from Br/Ar/Pa/Ur
because it is now necessary to buy the Chinese versions..

Or am I being just naive?

Of course Timermann is going to give signals to hios Chinese hopsts who are investing huge amounts in Argentina. This is badly needed as the country continues to reduce its debt with Western Europe and North America. The Chinese will have to play along as they need Argentinas farm products more than anything. With India trying to cosy up to Buenos Aires as well and another billion to feed Argentinas future is to say the least BRIGHT

O'gara, take your head out of your arse!!! China is not investing in Argentina, they are buying Argentina, idiot! Do you think China is what? friends??? Step by step these people will take over our country. It's time for this Mercosur, Unasur and all those crappy organizations to vanish into thin air and never be found again.

l think you are right, xbarilox. China is for China(naturally)and they are buying much of the world to secure their supplies. Just wait for it, when they get interested in Antarctica.

Yep, the Chinese are economic imperialists such as the world has never seen before.... I think they already have Africa and Australasia in the bag..

Of course the Chinese are imperialists just like the gringoes and the Brits mind you they are alot more sophisticated than those who have never managed to move on from brute force. But CFK inderstands this well hence the new land ownership bill. The facts are Chinese demand and soon Indian demand is going to make Argentina rich.CFK unlike the boludos in the oppostion knows this is THE opportunity to industrialize the country hence the incredible growth rates without any borrowing as Europe and NA decay

If Argentina's industry moans about Brazil's industry imagine when you've got China's super low cost industry. This wouldn't be good for any Mercosul member. Maybe for commodities sector but that's all.

5 geo , again you miss the point,
as others have said, china is using her wealth, to buy minerals
and other precise items around the world to suit them,,
the west used to have certain industries, but now because of cheaper items from the east, that is flooded with the stuff, good or bad, they undercut us, and now we suffer, unemployment, closed industries, entirely our own fault as we did not protect ourselves, but then again its called free trade, and as long as people are willing to but cheaper, and as long as their is a market, the east will override others, im not saying that’s good or bad, its just the way things go, ,
what i am saying is, don’t be so keen to let the east, buy up everything you have, its in their interest not yours, investment is only good as long as you have someone to invest, china is buying power, and so will India,
all im saying is be careful, rather than laugh at us or the west, south America should be learning our errors, its just a thought .

Not too often I agree wholeheardedly with Briton but hes 100% correct.Argentina however will have to deal with its biggest customer in friendly but serious way.Do people want Timermann to insult the Chinese.China and India need Argentina more than the Argentines need them at least for now.I would say in the future if those economies continue to grow argentina can become one of the richest countries on earth out of the relationship.Obviously a long term partnership needs to be built with friendly talk while protecting Argentine resources like CFK in the land bill

Good to see so many posters now pushing the line that I have been bashing for the last few years -

ad hoc 'selling off the Family Silver' feels good in the short term (especially at Election-time),
but is Distinctly Counter-Productive when measured over the life-span of a citizen or the nation.

I hate to burst your bubble but Argentina will never “get rich” exporting Soy. It is not expensive enough, too many countries can produce cheaper with higher volumes and better quality. Do you not understand how a free market works?
Argentina is poorer now than they were 60 years ago and will be poorer 60 years from now unless you get the crooks out of gov't.

Of course its obvious yankee Argentina is getting poorer growing 9% a year since 2002 while the Us and Eu are marching forward.Did anyone say Argentina would get rich on soy exports alone?Have you not noticed how Argentinas exports are ever more diverse and with added value or do you not want to notice

well nice to know i got something right,
    it is just an opinion,
just goes to show, [putting aggression aside]
We can get on together, and agree,
Now if we can do it,
So can Argentina, and give up her claim on the Falklands, and let them live happily ever after,
instead of being so violent and aggressive, against a small tiny little peacefully, innocent
unarmed and law biding little island,

it does not sit well does it, that a gigantic large country , and a hundred times more powerful aggressive country like Argentina, that has so much empty space
that is not used, , picking on this tiny little wind swept peaceful island 300 miles of her coat,[does it]
come on Argentina, your better than that,
be manly instead of cowardly , leave them alone
    just a thought .

Isn't the discussion about Arg exports to India and China? Neither of them are buying cars or car parts from Argentina. 54% of total exports are from the farm and farm products. So yeah as I said you can't get rich on Soy.
If you believe Argentina is growing at 9% you probably believe inflation is only 10% because both stats are from INDEC.

Why don't you put all your money in the peso that seems like a good way to get rich...I think 5/1 by Dec...I heard U$ are flying out of the country right now and BCRA doesn't know what to do because they are running out of reserves....$100MM day goes pretty fast
