Rockhopper Exploration declared a second oil and gas discovery in Falkland Islands waters and announced the drilling of an additional two wells. The announcement comes exactly two years to the day since the Falklands’ shore based yard began its work in support of oil development in the Islands. Read full article

Nov 09th, 2011 - 10:18 pm - Link - Report abuse 0question, is this good news only for the people in the Falklands or is it good news for the UK only or is it good news for both?
Nov 09th, 2011 - 10:18 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Can someone explain me how the Falklanders will react if the UK government takes it over in the name of let's share the oil for the british people.
Would Falklanders accept if most of the wealth goes to the hungry UK government? Is it even possible that the UK can take away the wealth what belongs to the people of the falklands?
we all know that Argentina won't like this at all, no matter what happens..but forget about that for a moment.
just some questions.
If the UK tried to do that, the Falklanders might rightly get a little cheesed off. But we won't do that I'm sure. Just like we wouldn't turn Port Stanley into a nuclear testing range.
Nov 09th, 2011 - 10:22 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Either way, I'm sure they would rather we got some oil revenue then Argentina did, especially after Cristina tore up the oil agreement in one of her tantrums.
The oil belongs to the Falklanders, and good luck to them, as long as the Argies dont get a sniff, I am happy for them
Nov 09th, 2011 - 10:31 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Fido - The UK has no constitutional capacity to take the oil revenue from the FI. The licences are issued by the FIG, the tax and royalty structure have been determined by the FIG and as such the money will flow to the FIG to spend on what ever they see fit.
Nov 09th, 2011 - 10:36 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The UK takes no revenue from the financial service industries in Bermuda or the Cayman Islands or any money from Tourism in any of the BOTs.
The only way the UK profits from this is the fact that it will collect stamp study from the transactions of equity of the companies that happen to be listed on the LSE (aim). But as the LSE is perhaps the most important market in the world for international companies these stamp duty collections will only be a drop in the ocean compared to the overall volume of trades.
There is of course the Capital Gains Tax that I and fellow investors will have to pay. I have no complaints about this however as it goes towards our NHS and other public services.
Is this what happens in Argentina? A province strikes oil and central government takes over? Its not what happens between the UK and the BOTs, the islands resources belong to the islands, its a modern relationship under the Constitution, the islands aren't the colony you're led to believe by your political establishment in Buenos Aires.
Nov 09th, 2011 - 10:56 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Thanks for the comments beef.
Nov 09th, 2011 - 11:05 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Brits, stop stealing Argentine resources. Look at the karma you've suffered from centuries of empire: a country overrun with strange former colonials. There will be a price to pay someday for your evil endeavors in the South Atlantic.
Nov 09th, 2011 - 11:26 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Dorian - Strange colonials? That is a fairly racist comment! Thanks to those colonials I can enjoy a variety of foods after a night out on the beers. We call it multiculturalism and I personally love it.
Nov 09th, 2011 - 11:36 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The resources belong to the FI and if we were stealing then why haven't your gvt taken us to court?
The Karma of strangers? Poland, Lithuania and Afghanistan and China were never British territory. And then most of you are colonials, unless Spaniards come originally from South America.

Nov 10th, 2011 - 01:50 am - Link - Report abuse 0” December 16th, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights is adopted by UN General Assembly Resolution 2200A (XXI) -

Nov 10th, 2011 - 02:20 am - Link - Report abuse 0Let the native indians return to their ancestral homeland then too! Ohh i forgot you just about wiped them all out.
You really should take a good look at your own country before calling others hypocrites, but then argentina is the biggest hypocrite of them all.
Kipling, when you can construct a sentence that is vaguely a question I'll be happy to answer, until then you look stupid.
Nov 10th, 2011 - 03:10 am - Link - Report abuse 0Marcos - the only fools here are the ones who rant and rave but are too pathetic to do anything to back up their claims and threats. That kind of sums up your entire leadership.

This is excellent news.
Nov 10th, 2011 - 09:32 am - Link - Report abuse 0Well done Rockhopper!
Don't worry Argentina, am sure you too will have some oil in your own adjacent territorial waters. Rockhopper's skills and experience should prove invaluable if you are having problems though.
Today has been marked by the dead silence of Thunk (run out of nails obviously) and a pitiful response by More-crap jabbering on incoherently about the Chagossians.....

Nov 10th, 2011 - 06:37 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You might as well admit it Marcos, your hope on no oil being produced in the FI has gone up in smoke! It is too painful for you I know.
Your gvt is unwilling to do anything about it and fails to get any actual support. Carry on complaing Marcos, we will carry on being Great!
Do I hear the sound of More-crap munching his own words?

Nov 10th, 2011 - 07:29 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Bit of a sad argument there Marcos. The daily share price fluctuations have no relevance on whether oil production will start in the islands.
Nov 10th, 2011 - 07:47 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It's clear now that there is oil, in two locations.
I guess your ownly hope is that some slight drops in share price will somehow stop the company from producing oil... Sad, really.

Marcos a 3% drop today is more than acceptable after a 15% gain yesterday. Even think know that thick boy.
