The population of Peruvian anchoveta (= 'anchovy') undergoes catastrophic declines because of strong El Nino/[La Nina] events. Stock fluctuations of Peruvian anchoveta are not totally correlated with the dynamics of “meridional” atmospheric circulation, but these events complicate forecasting of Peruvian anchoveta.
Interestingly, the Peruvian sardine populations fluctuate out of phase – almost reciprocally - with the anchoveta.

My conclusion is that some years will be anchovy-burger years, and others will be sardine-burger years.
