Although I don't like bankers I'm glad Cameron is finally telling Europe/rest of the world that UK is not going to be pushed around anymore.

it is only a matter of time,
the europeans WILL force the goverment, to either toe the dictorial line, or give a referendum,
a victory for europe--or a victory for the people,
[but a bloody headache for the goverment ]

Actually I would rather be in Europe but with a stronger position to get what we want. Ultimatly Europe needs us as we have the most developed financial services industry in the world. Even better, Germany needs us even more as they are the prudent nation stuck in the same currency as a load of work shy Mediterraneans.

What is funny is that the French are realising that they can no longer put their feet up and pretend to be the important ones. Hence we get the occasional tantrum about credit ratings when thy havent even analysed the economics.

Eastern Europe and the current EU presidency Denmark are backing the UK which makes our position even stronger. Getting more out of Europe while putting less in the name of the game, and good business :-)

I think David's “veto” has paid off well. It's nice to see him show he has at least some backbone.

well we can still trade from the out side,
we can still keep what is good, and disgard the bad bits,
we can also be friends, but i think we need to withdraw from the euro loony train, we need to control what is ours,
and i truly belive the reduction in the military, is european lead and instatuted, they wish a european army ,, navy , and air force , thats not for me .
    just an opinion .

I agree that we are fortunate to have DC at the helm during this time. He has balls.

If we had a referendum now, I think it would be a close call. In or out we can trade with the EU but it helps to be part of the policy making. The big question is if it is worth the expense.

We have, quite rightly, stayed away from the Euro and will continue to do so.

And at this moment in time both Germany and France are pushing for this [bank tax]
the TV says we will hear more of the details by march, as they wish to enforce this ASAP, this then would be pushed without British say so, not very democratic is it .

According to the experts, to enforce this, without all 27 agreeing, would in fact make the VETO and all other vetoes, redundant, and thus anything can then be invoked on countries,
With or without their full consent,
Time will tell I suppose .

It will be interesting to see whether France's impatience to, and feeling of rivalry towards, the UK will in the future mean the end of the peace that's been reigning between European powers since the end of WW2.

We have plenty disagreements with other EU members, it's a bit of a wild exaggeration to think this will lead to war or some other form of conflict.

Apart from the minor bickering and disagreements, France and the UK have never been closer. Two of a nations most closely guarded secrets are the location of it's naval ships and nuclear technology. We both openly share these with country's like the US and France.

I didn't mean to say THIS per se will lead to war, but that it can be the beginning of a new era of conflicts. Economic disputes during a slowdown are one of the main factors behind military conflicts.

Would their ever we war in Europe,
Well to be truthfully only a fool would say never,
But most wars in Europe always seem to start with smoke,
And end up on fire, dragging everybody else in,
In the 21st century and in a civilised world the fair answer would be no,
But you just never know, and hope for the best, trading doing thing together, talking all helps to keep the calm.
But some say, it is better to have a gun, and not use it,
    Rather
Than not have a gun, and desperately needs it,
    [or something like that]
    Just a thought .
