Thirty years after the Falkland Islands conflict, the South Atlantic Islands are the focus of a “black gold rush” as a string of exploration companies seek to be the first to find commercially viable reserves in the region, writes the London Express City & Business. Read full article

There are even fewer hotels because the FIHC closed their only hotel(Fawlty towers) because they didn't have the competance to run it ! Most of the money is going to local companies rather than FIHC as they have willing, competant and able people running them.

The same again: BIG money for some years (and only for a couple of lazy petrol-shareholders) and after that... crisis again, unemployment...

This ANARCHY at the markets will never bring a better future for common people.

Where is all this money going to? to people living at Malvinas??

Disgusting way to run a british colony, typical of the UK anyway... what can we expect of a colonial power?

Where is the “self-determination” in here?

The discovery belongs to the people of the Falkland Islands and they will benefit the most from the Oil revenue, there is always a high demand for oil and gas in the worldand that wont change for a long time to come!!
The Falklanders manage there own economy and only rely on the UK for defence and foreign policy.
Also the Islanders enjoy VERY high levels of employment !!!!

    Long Live the Falklands.

    Where crisis? Where unemployment?
We have never had either here.
Why do you think we offer jobs to so many Saint Helenians and Chileans?
The money is going to them and to Falkland Islanders. And we run our own country.
Why don't you do some research before sharing your ill- formed and worthless prejudices?

I was not talking about crisis or unemployment Malvinas inhabitants, we all know that it is just too little people, and very CHEAP workers. You can't choose anything when it comes to negotiating with oil companies, don't you know? It is called liberal economy.

All the golden decade you may have in the Islands because of this industry is nothing compared to the value of the resources grabbed.

I was talking about the UK, that's where the money from the colony goes... Well the UK or any other place where shareholders may be... And it is Public Money from british people at the northern hemisphere being used on colonialism, it is not fair for them to maintain this colony that represents a good business for a little group.

And I was not talking about unemployment at the Islands, of course there is job to do there. Maintaining a colony is the main industry there.

@7: “We run Our country” Are you sure you are running it and are you sure it is yours? the right-wingers in London have expressed the following:

“the Falkland Islands are British; they are Her Majesty’s territory”
    http://en.mercopress.com/2011/12/26/people-must-know-full-facts-about-argentina-s-intentions-in-the-falklands

So please, try to let me understand better this fairy tale: The land belongs to the queen but at the same time it belongs to you, or not?

And at the same time you run the land you think is yours but the government is in London... something like that?

@5: “demand for oil and gas in the worldand that wont change for a long time to come!!” This industry has been run by little groups who invest in wars and who give a sh!t about you or me or the future. How long do you think this dirty nonrenewable energy market will last? 100 years? Of course NOT!

And it is also expensive, it is just a group of dirty investors who don't even want to go on making money with newest technologies. And I also criticize the Argentinian ones.

Good for you,why do you care about Argentina, then?
I do not give a damn about you or Malvinas.....I only care about Argentina...

    @Fermin
as the oil is the exclusive property of the islanders, and whomever the islanders allow to purchase a license, they have nothing to worry about from “big evil oil companies”.

in first world societies with stable, democratic and reliable governments, big oil companies find it near impossible to stifle the rights of citizens, and are thus forced to negotiate fairly, as the citizens cannot be bought, bullied or pushed out of the way, which is so often the case in third world nations.

and if the islanders feel that they are not getting enough of a share they may merely vote to renegotiate, or to rescind rights to the company in question, and invite a competitor with more favorable terms. however seeing how first world societies only rarely have to do this, this is near certainly not going to be needed.

the money from the Falklands stays in the Falklands. fishing, tourism, other industries and the coming oil industry all go to the pockets of the islanders as they are the ones with ownership of these resources, and are the ones who sell the licenses for them. the UK government gets zero profit, and their contributing a garrison does precisely nothing to help the islands economy bar.

and the UK population has shown its satisfaction in a tiny percent of the defense budget being used to defend British citizens from a genocidal third world regime, and whining about the “costs” (ie roughly 1% of the defense budget) does less than nothing.

and the queen holds zero power outside of ambassadorial and purely constitutional duties. she “owns” the islands about as much as she “owns” Canada. all actual power is held in the population and the elected government and has been since the 1600s.

which is infinitely better than in argentina, where the people hold zero power due to corruption, increasing authoritarianism and intimidation of free speech, media and opposition, which the argentine government hides by whining about the Falklands

Argentina has started a ‘squid war’ as part of its relentless campaign to annexe the Falkland Islands.
It has told its fishermen to catch the creatures before they reach the waters around the British territory.
The inflammatory move is designed to deal a damaging blow to the islands’ booming £90million economy.
Delicacy: Argentina has told its fishermen to catch prized Illex squid before they reach the waters around the Falkland Islands
The Falklands’ burgeoning fishing industry is worth nearly £45million, and half that comes from catches of Illex squid, a rare delicacy in the Far East.
More...Blair, Brown, Major. In 100 years they will be long forgotten, but not the grocer's daughter from Granthan
The row flared as Foreign Secretary William Hague warned Argentina not to ‘intimidate’ the Falklands population through ‘economic pressure’.
Argentina still claims sovereignty over the islands – held by Britain since the 1830s – despite its crushing defeat in the 1982 Falklands War.
Tensions between the UK and Argentina rose last year after potentially lucrative offshore oil reserves were discovered in the Falklands basin.
The diplomatic rift deepened just before Christmas when Argentine president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner persuaded four South American neighbours to block Falklands ships from entering their ports.
Now Argentina has targeted supplies of squid in a shameless bid to harm the islands’ economy.
Economy: The Falklands' fishing industry is worth nearly £45million with half of that coming from catches of the squid which are a rare delicacy in the Far East
Last year around 80,000 tonnes of Illex squid were caught in both Falkland and Argentine waters
Illex squid begin their one-year lives off the River Plate, which marks the border of Argentina and Uruguay, in September and move southwards as they grow.

@10: it is funny the way you describe the first world and the 3rd one.

Do you really think that the UK is more democratic than Argentina? The differences between the 1st and the 3rd world are not based on democracy levels.

And what is this “genocidal third world regime”?? It was the UK the one involved in the wars “against terrorism” in the last years. Remember the mass-destruction nuclear weapons that were finally never found in Afganistán/Irak!

That is genocide. Guantanamo prison is genocide and corruption.

Even the Argentinian military junta that we had to suffer in here 30 years ago was supported by 1st world nations.

We live in a world where interests and changes cross national borders. So much of what happens in the 3rd world nations has to do with things that happen in the 1st one also.

It is a very stereotypical and cliché the image that you give about the way things work.

“argentina, where the people hold zero power due to corruption, increasing authoritarianism and intimidation of free speech” Where did you get this from? Get informed!

Freedom of speech is a reality like never before in Argentina, because now people is starting to have access to media! This didn't happen before, and the opposition and the corporations that are against this process are the ones who achieved a monopoly position at the market during the authoritarian government of the military junta! This same two newspapers that nowadays put lies on their headlines were alliates of the military junta. THAT was authoritarism.

Democracy is stronger than ever before in Argentina. New TV channels appearing, different voices, small organizations are little by little getting their voice and demands broadcasted.

Argentina is not a good example in a lot of things, but when it comes to democracy and communication it is really an example that another societies should follow.

If there was so much democracy in the UK then why were there so many riots and protests in London lately?

Well, fermin, that is good to see that Argentina has become so democratic. l mean that, not being sarcastic.
But that does not alter the fact that the Falklands are not yours, they are ours.

It's interesting to see how many comments on here are from indivduals who profess to understand or know about UK, Falkland Islands or Argentina. I have lived here for some months now but come from the UK. I know nothing of Argentina or it's citizens and openly acknowledge that. I regularly chat to friends and family back in the UK and have some understanding of how the finances within the Falklands work:
The oil revenuess (if they come) will be split - between the organisations (& thier shareholders who will be worldwide) who extract the oil and the local economy that will benefit from both tax revenues and the services that support those working in the oil industry.
The UK do NOT recieve any of the Tax Revenue from FIG! There is no plan or plot for them to!
The UK currently run a military base here and offer both protection and foreign policy support to FIG and the islanders. If it weren't for the Argentinian threats the UK goverment would have little involvement in the running of the Islands. That is what they mean by Self-govern and self-determination!
There are many Argentinians living here - happily alongside the locals, English, Scottish, Chilleans, Americans, Canadians and many others (from memory there is a cross section of population from 160+ countries!)
Why do so many Argentians (& it's politicians and media) make such sweeping statements about the Islands and it's population from a remote position and with virtually no knowledge of life here? Before coming here I would not have dreamed of commenting......
