The Falkland Islands Meat Company (FIMCo) may export up to 30,000 lambs in the coming season compared to 26,000 last year in an abattoir successfully upgraded by local companies, reports the Penguin News in this week’s edition. Read full article
The Islamic community in Britain and Europe provide a huge opportunity for the islands via the export of Sheep meat - even quite old animals are valued for their meat. Surprising the islanders never took advantage of that. Lamb though is especially favoured in islamic cusine so good luck to them if they can break through the tyrannical tariffs imposed on agricultural products by Brussels.
With the failure of New Zealand to understand the people of the UK, many British people will not buy New Zealand lamb. Now that we have found that New Zealand only uses slaughter methods that result in halal meat.
Don't make the same mistake, Falklands. And don't forget to properly label your meat. If it's halal or doesn't say, I won't buy it. I do support you, but I will not support production of halal meat.
@4 conqueror
the reason I suggested the islanders export sheep meat for the Islam market is because it is still customary for sheep in the Islands to be killed by having their throats cut. The only modification the islanders would need to make is to bring a Muslim religious person to the islands to supervise the slaughter then the meat will be good for the european Halal market.
They do this in Argentina now to serve the Muslim people in the cities.
Why is there only Good News coming from the Falklands!! Every single day more positive results coming from these Dynamic Islands, I expect argentina would like to congratulate the Falklanders for overcoming the obstactables which argentina has put in there way!.
Just an innocent joke to show that, even you, an “Abattoir knowing Kelper” can get things terribly wrong……..
Sheep are, all over the world, slaughtered by cutting their throats……
You want them alive so that that little heart of theirs can pump all that nasty blood out; you know?
I was just trying to be helpful as I don't hate the islanders and why should I?
I was referring to the estancias or farms. Every year many farms in the islands have to reduce the number of Sheeps on their land and these animals go to waste. The method of killing them is usually by cutting the throat. These animals are not considered good for meat in the islands but in Asian cooking the meat is good because of the way of cooking with spices and tenderisng processes. And I have noticed that in Britain especially sheep meat or mutton is impossible to buy for muslims and they have to import nearly all of it.
I won't mention it again though.

You're partly right- sheep on farms killed for home consumption do usually get their throats cut. Culls are usually shot as there are so many of them, but it does seem like a waste. Some people send cull sheep to the abattoir as there is a market of sorts, but I don't know what. It's a shame because mutton is fantastic meat if you cook it right. I'd add tagine as a good way to cook it. Falkland Islanders do still eat a lot of mutton generally. When we go abroad we find it hard to get.
When our Muslim surgeon wants meat he goes along and says the prayer himself!
Throwing them out of aircraft will do the trick
Sure sticky and the brits were happy about that!!
The years 1979-1981 marked a high point in uk-Argentina military cooperation
For the first time since I started reading these blogs Think has me intrigued about something. How DO they kill the sheep at the abattoir? Last time I was there I thought I had it explained to me that they give them an electric shock that stuns them and then their heads are cut right off with a big pair of mechanical shears. Maybe I have it wrong but I don't remember seeing their throats being cut.
Could MK or JF or someone else from Sand Bay tell me please? It's got me wondering now.
Confine the animal in the restraining chute
Immobilize the animal using a captive bolt stunner or other provided device. The stunner may be placed either at a point in the center of the forehead or centered immediately behind the pole. The stunner should be held firmly against the heat at the time of firing. (The purpose for immobilizing the animal is the render the animal unconscious. We don't want to stop the heart because we need it to pump the blood out when ensanguinating.)
Release the immobilized animal from the restraining chute and shackle by one hind shank at a point below the hock.
Hoist to convenient height for exsanguination
Exsanguination. With a sterilized knife, make an incision in the hide just anterior to the point of the brisket and extend to 12-18 inches toward the anterior end of the jaw. Keeping the incision on the center line, thrust the point of the knife upward behind the breast bone (6-8 inches deep). This will sever the carotid artery and jugular vein providing a thorough bleed.
Remove the head. Start at the exsanguination incision and skin ....
You must be one of those new generation Stanley city slickers……!
Why don’t you pick the phone or go to the pub and ask anybody from camp…..?
You could even read the description at (26), generously rendered by Frank the Yank .
1) You stun (or not) the animal.
2) You cut its throat whilst the animal is alive so its heart can pump the blood out.
3) The animal bleeds to death.
4) You process the carcass.
Been in an abattoir in Australia, where pigs were being slaughtered.
They feed them into a compartment on a revolving wheel that decends in a gas chamber.
They hang the carcases & collect the blood which is sold to make plasma, l was told.
Apart from bacon, l don't like pigmeat much.
Sheepmeat is far superior.
Yes I did a little research on this subject. The Islamic population of Europe is huge in fact I am astonished at the size of the Muslim European community which is estimated at over 40 millions in Britain alone it is estimated to be perhaps close to 4 millions with many towns and cities like Birmingham and leieceseter almost entirely Muslim.
This is a fantastic economic and political opportuntiy for the Islanders - don't forget my friends you need all the support you can get now.
28 Think, I am definitely a city boy but we love to get out to Camp whenever we can. Lafonia is our favourite and then San Carlos. Both on East Falkland. Actually you'll have heard of San Carlos. It's where the British ground troops landed when they were forced to defend the islands against your county's aggressive act in 1982.

That is a complete and utter fabrication of the truth beyond anything even half believable. I have LIVED in both Birmingham(Two and a half years) and Leicester(Six months) so i know from my personal experience that what you've just stated is utter nonsense.
There is a large Muslim population in Birmingham, Larger than Leicester i'd say. There are large areas that you'll see with mostly Muslims in them. But nowhere in the region that you have claimed.

I’ll have to keep my eyes wide open at the European supermarkets to spot that excellent Halal slaughtered produce from Malvinas.
Would like to organize a “blind test” against the world’s best lamb (and my personal favorite)…………., Icelandic lamb.
Hmmmmm………… All this mutton talk gave me a craving ……I think I’ll cook a nice Smalehovud on Sunday :-)
