Just over a quarter of people in England support Scotland becoming independent, a new survey has found. The latest NatCen Social Research British Social Attitudes Survey found 26% of English residents favoured ending the union between the two countries, the highest figure yet in such a survey. Feb 28th, 2012 - 06:23 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Is it worth it? NO.
Get shut of the garrulous mouthed, England bashing, Scots as soon as possible.
See how they get on then!
Agreed, if they don't want to be part of england and wales, then they can not have our money either.
Feb 28th, 2012 - 06:45 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I personally cannot wait until they take their whinging to Germany and become some weird kind of german neocolonialist backwater. Then we can build a really big wall like in Escape from New York to keep the skirt-wearing gimps out.
Feb 28th, 2012 - 08:16 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Are we talking about 'people in England' here or 'english people'? There is a difference...
Feb 28th, 2012 - 08:30 pm - Link - Report abuse 0If the former it will be the scottish living in england that support it.....and it will be all the english living in scotland that vote for a continued union...........
and anyway.... 'what did the scottish ever do for us!'
There is no getting away with it Alex Salmond has run rings round the normal UK politicos (what a sorry bunch) over the last few years. This is because he eats sleeps and breathes Scottish independence ever since he saw Braveheart (what a load of anti English Hollywood tosh that was).
Feb 28th, 2012 - 08:31 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The counter argument has not been put yet in detail. For a while he put Scotland in the 'Arc of Prosperity' along with Ireland and Iceland. Come 2008 and that was quickly forgotten.
He tries to compare Scottish independence with Irish independence . If he looked at it closely he would see that that was an economic disaster with the most productive third of the Irish population emigrating (mainly to England), ethnic cleansing of 90% of the protestant population and economic stagnation for 50 years until Britain joined the EEC and Ireland had to tag along. In the meanwhile the Irish whiskey industry (then the worlds biggest) shrank by 90% and the Scotch whisky industry expanded dramatically. All in the cause on nationalism.
I don't think the negative effects on Scotland will be as dramatic as in the Irish case but there are bound to be some on an economy which is over 55% dependent on the state (mainly UK) for jobs . I would estimate the job losses would be in the region of 250,000 (defence, Inland Revenue and company and bank head offices.)
As for Scotlands oil ;whenever I have put this to Orcadians and Shetlanders that I know they say if Scotland becomes independent then everything is up for grabs. They do not see why their oil should go to subsidise the unemployed of Glasgow when if they keep it themselves they can be as rich as the Kuwaitis.
He may be very 'canny' but Alex Salmond's liking for curries and chips shows. The best physical description of him ( and I cannot remember who said it ) is ' a strange toad like creature'.
He is a man not to be underestimated as the orthodox UK politicians have consistently done. He does get things wrong though.
@5 It's quite clear that it's still going to be in the Arc of Prosperity along with Iceland, Ireland, Spain and Greece.
Feb 28th, 2012 - 09:11 pm - Link - Report abuse 0We should keep the immigration from Scotland for the good Scotts, no point fraking our own economy because of their nonsense.

Feb 29th, 2012 - 09:55 am - Link - Report abuse 0We have been through so much together.
But if thats what the Scottish people want, then its their decision.
l think that they may regret it.
What about a trial separation? Only joking!
There is a saying that says if 1 persons has an issue with you, it's highly likely that he might be wrong. If it is 2, well then you might have to begin to look at yourself. If it is 3, then it is pretty obvious that it is you.
Feb 29th, 2012 - 11:58 am - Link - Report abuse 0Out of 3 neighbours England has (Northern Ireland does not count as it is a fictitious invention) 2 hate England's guts with passion. If you cross La Manche, they are not too fond of the English there either.
English.....
not an easy people by the looks of what its neighbours have to say....
I do not understand what the problem is. Scotland was only taken into the Union because it was broke and kept conducting raids across the border. Neither has really changed. I calculated that England would probably benefit to the extent of around £118 million A DAY if Scotland left. And we should understand that the Scots and the French deserve each other. Actually, there is a body of opinion that says they are actually two halves of the same race. The French being the (slightly gay) males and the Scots (complete with skirts) the females!
Feb 29th, 2012 - 02:08 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I have no problem seeing the back of the Scots. After all, we've been trying to get rid for a couple of hundred years by letting them rush into dangerous places first. But I agree with GY @3. A really BIG wall. And razor wire. And minefields. And NO immigration. And forced repatriation. Could it be time for some ethnic cleansing?
What wonderful people we English are. And better neighbours than argies. Argies don't have neighbours. Just current or future victims!
As a Scot living and working in London I look at the SNP and their fixation on an independence issue with as much amusement as reading the latest foot in mouth episode from Argentina.
Feb 29th, 2012 - 02:27 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Not every Scot wants independence and is more than happy with the status quo, Salmond being slightly scared of this is quietly trying to block the Scots who don't live in Scotland but live elsewhere in the UK, from having a say in the referendum because most of us would vote against his petty kingdom making.
@9 The Welsh hate the English and Scots, the Scots hate the Welsh and English, the English hate the Welsh and Scots and the Northern Irish hate each other. Couple that with the Manx hating everyone and you have the perfect country.
thats what friends are for .
