They'd have to expel protectionist Argentina before Mercosur would become attractive to new members.

Don't bet on it .. the other members would be delighted to be rid of the duplicitous Argentine millstone around their necks.

Brazil won't. Even with all trade barriers they need us as much as we need them.
Besides. Getting Argentina out of Mercosur is not possible. Or we pull out or the other members do and then they establish a new trade block.

You seem to be deluding yourself that Argentina has friends in the world. Let me assure you that it doesn't.

Let me assure you are wrong. As much as I dislike Chavez, Venezuela is clearly a friend of us. Venezuela is in the world. So there goes your argument.

Venezuela under the current government is a friend to no country .. and if you seriously think otherwise then you are deluding yourself and are in for a huge disappointment.

Sorry, I remeber you know more of Venezuela than Venezuelans themselves.
Really. Go and ask. Do yourself the favor and clean a bit you weird ideas.

But other friends come to mind. Ask around in Brazil and serve yourself with a dosis of reality. We both even have a day when we celebrate that friendship, 16 of March.

I wish to take this opportunity to regrade Rousseff from do-able to sub-marginal do-able( two bagger) status. KFC retains her coyote ugly chew your arm off to escape fugly status......

I think that there will be an agreement in the next Mercosur meeting that the ban on doing bilateral trade deals will be relaxed until the monetary status of all member countries converge to 'parity' - which, with Argentina and the rest heading off in different directions, means for ever.
This allows PA and UR to peg themselves to Brasilian policy, trade deals and the Real, doing trade deals that benefit all three.

Uruguay shouldn't be in mercosur if it doesn't help them, I read that fakland is in the EU and I think Uruguay should be in EU as well to end the problems in uruguay, but remember Rio De la plata will be garded by Argentine citizens and any pirate will be hunted down and executed and their boat will be set on fire as Australia does with support of the UN. www.abc.net.au/environment/articles/2011/12/13/3389001.htm
In 2005, Australia put in place a National Plan of Action against illegal fishing (pdf). Rear Admiral Tim Barrett, Commander of Border Protection says, “In 2006/07 specific funding was given to Customs and Border Protection and AFMA to deter illegal foreign fishing in northern waters.” The impetus for funding was propelled out of concern for protection of our own fish stocks, but also by a UN International Plan of Action, signed by 110 nations in 2001.
Between July 2007 and July 2008, 186 boats were apprehended, 141 of these were Indonesian-owned boats. The entire crews were arrested and transferred to immigration detention centres, their boats towed to the nearest port - most often Darwin - and burnt.

@13 So what's your point? If they're not fishing in Australian waters then there isn't a problem. If Argentinian coast guard vessels apprehend fishing vessels in Falklands territorial waters, they will be acting illegally and will also be sunk.

    What's the issue?

@13 Uruguay in EU??? EU is a failed block. Yeap, still a rich area but the block itself didn'work!

It would be better if Mercosur could integrate to Andean Community of Nations (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru). That would give more opportunities to Uruguay.

If you pay attention to the facts you will see that Brazil itself is a huge market for Uruguay. They just need to develop a more competitive industry.
