Top Argentine Air Force officers admitted that since the Malvinas war the force never recovered its operational capacity, but in spite of the shortcomings and budget cuts the new generations of military pilots are completing their training and flying hours ‘normally’ even when the press reported to the contrary. Apr 30th, 2012 - 09:02 am - Link - Report abuse 0Seems a bit dangerous having you Air Force school and Aircraft factory in Cordoba, what would happen if the Spanish decide to Nationalise them?
Apr 30th, 2012 - 09:33 am - Link - Report abuse 0The air force were the only Argentine military force to come out of the conflict with their credibility intact. They were the only units that stepped up to the plate and were considered brave and honourable by their British counterparts.
Apr 30th, 2012 - 11:14 am - Link - Report abuse 01. And if the Britain removed its military presence, how long could 3000 islanders hold off Argentine forces? Perhaps half and hour!
Apr 30th, 2012 - 11:25 am - Link - Report abuse 0The army forces have been downgraded to prevent military coups not falklands invasion. And with Venezuela and Brazil waving the Argentine flag, they could send in a couple of cohorts on Argentina's behalf.
@4 I just watched Avatar and I think the Falklanders could hold off the Argentinians forever, especially if after the argentinians burn down the tree they then tame the dragon-bird and the island-mother saves a few of the nicer argies who can help out.

Apr 30th, 2012 - 12:50 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Looks like website FAA reflects some realization that their Falklands efforts (as well as some Misiones de Paz (Peace Missions) will be their only contribution to history...
Quite funny to hear their Brigadier saying that they are training pilots but that there are no planes available for them to fly once they have finished their training.
Apr 30th, 2012 - 12:56 pm - Link - Report abuse 0No wonder they all up and leave to the private sector.
Never say never, be they weaker, they still have some capability even with a few aircraft operationally capable they can do a lot of damage. Remember, it was the Argie air attacks that nearly lost us the war, they were superb airmen, very brave and very able oponents. They might be totally destroyed if they tried again, but, being lulled into a false sense of security would be a big mistake.

Apr 30th, 2012 - 03:14 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I agree totally about the airmen of 1982 BUT (and there's always a but after 30 years) technology has moved on considerably from then. A single Typhoon can down ALL the remaining time-expired airframe Mirages 3 & 5s that they have and that is without even seeing them.
Why do you imagine the Argies head back home as soon as they light up the radar on the Falklands (there are no Malvinas) on their monthly 'test'?
AND that is without the Type 45 even coming into play.
I am only lulled by a sense of reality.

Apr 30th, 2012 - 03:40 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You are right of course and I like your comment 'I am only lulled by a sense of reality', very good. I have every confidence in our current defence capability on the Falkland Islands and understand that their is no match for the Typhoon in the Argie aircraft stock. I simply wish to point out that withstanding this, if madness prevailed and an attack was launched and one fighter got through, it would be a blow no matter how badly the attack failed.

Apr 30th, 2012 - 05:11 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It's truly sad and also comforting. In Chile, we were with most of our obsolete jets inoperable due to lack of parts. Today, Chile's F-16s can deter any Argentine threat and the once proud Argentine air force is where we were 1n 1984. Their pilots during the Falklands War however were incredibly brave and innovative.

As for the argentine air force,
To be fair, some have been soon hanging around the Spanish air force bases in Spain and north Africa,
A few have been seen hanging around Hugo’s air force base,
Perhaps they are hoping to either catch one falling of the back of a lorry, or picking up a few cheaply,
But we suspect that what ever they fly, they will do a lot better than their invisible navy boys

To all: The mentally challenged #20 claims to be Uruguayan, but the conclusion is he’s a single male, of mixed-nationality, most likely between 18 and 25 years of age, underemployed, most likely still living with his mother in Europe. Exhibits a non-completed mediocre education with English as his primary language. An extremely self-centered narcissist, who craves attention and acknowledgement from others. He has trouble empathizing with superiors or understanding their positions. He’s apparently extremely sensitive to rejection - implied, perceived or real from others and may react with displays of aggression, threats or temper tantrums when denied. May 01st, 2012 - 07:53 am - Link - Report abuse 0Some interesting stuff here but a lot containing sheer ignorance especially in relationship to the UK debt mountain or not.
London is probably the second biggest finance centre in the world and so many companies and countries have decided to issue Eurobonds in that market with UK investment/merchant banks as the underwriters.
These debts then show up as UK in the oft quoted CIA handbook even though they are not public debt (i.e. that of the UK government) but remains as external debt.
If you look closely other financial centres such as Luxembourg are similarly skewed.
I think you should learn to interpret figures before quoting blindly.

May 01st, 2012 - 04:35 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Let's get real about the nice little aircraft that Argentina are to buy / build 40 off (down from 100).
That is all it is. Forget strapping ANY Exocet AM39B (Block 3) on it al all: they weight 670Kg (1,500 lb) and the aircraft in its limited attack mode is utterley incapable of carrying any and getting off the floor nevermind getting to the Falklands (there are no Malvinas).
With a lower bomb / rocket load it could get to the islands but it would need refuelling once the bombs had gone. Do you think a Type 45 would not have knocked it out of the sky well before that.
Don't worry about all 40 getting off the floor in Argentina either (2016 earliest): the Type 45 can kill them ALL before they have left their runway on the mainland. AND that is without the defences on the islands themselves.
A Type 45 can kill all the present pitiful Mirage 3s & 5s (about 20 or so and dropping out of the skies due to airframe fatigue) and ALL 40 of the trainer / limited attack aircraft without replenshment.
And there are still 4 Typhoons who can kill similar planes without even being in visual range of the enemy.
If I had the money I would buy a trainer version, it would be a nice limited range personal jet for me and the wife.

I have restructured one fund which had USD26 billion of bonds and that is one of many.
The UK national debt (government) is actually about USD1.6 trillion
http://www.ukpublicspending.co.uk/uk_national_debt
The rest is non government and the government is not lender of last resort.
Conservatively the Bond market is in the region of USD90 trillion.
As the UK is a major financial centre a lot of bonds are written there but they are not the debts of the UK
You need to understand finance before making such crass comments as you have.
Argentina is unfortunately a financial basket case and the flight of capital seems to be increasing from that country. The UK on the other hand is viewed as a safe haven.

Definition: This entry records the cumulative total of all government borrowings less repayments that are denominated in a country's home currency. Public debt should not be confused with external debt, which reflects the foreign currency liabilities of both the private and public sector and must be financed out of foreign exchange earnings.
According to YOUR OWN GOVERNMENT the debt is like this:

First of all, my pardons for that silly remark that says more about me than about your studies. I'm sure you know your office.
Of course you are right, I didn't check my facts, nor my currency exchange. But worst of all, I trusted CIA as a source of information, that will NOT happen again. Your numbers are correct, UK debt IS 1.6 Trillion USD.
Even so, it's ridiculous (not saying you stated it) to say that SA countries have more debt, because they don't. Argentinas debt is at 136 Billion USD, hence pretty much lower than the UK's, and that was the source of the discussion. If one takes the GDP (and NOT from CIA page, I don't trust them with the time) per capita and subtract the debt per capita, the Argentinians still have more dollars per capita, with the difference that instead of getting a massive negative result, the UK lands on a pretty fair 9100 USD (per capita)...
Again, I'm sorry for that silly remark.
