The Spanish Government formally protested its “displeasure and discomfort” over the state visit of the Earl of Wessex to Gibraltar next month. But Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Garcia-Margallo nonetheless confirmed that the Spanish Queen Sofia will attend the May 18, 60th anniversary of the Coronation celebration in London, but “in a private capacity”. When the Spanish give Ceuta and Melilla back to Morocco then they might stop looking like hypocrites, bleating on about something that is none of their business.. British royals can visit British territory anytime they like, same as anyone.

Spain signed a contract stating they gave up rights to Gibraltar for all time, to my knowledge that hasn't changed, this is the same as Argentina with the settlement of differences, these hispanic types sign papers then say oh wait we changed our minds... suck to be you, pay attention next time.

    Reality check:

Both Spain and Britain benefit from Gibraltar being 'a different separate entity'.
Thousands of people cross the border daily in and out of Gibraltar to work, visit and trade.

And let's not forger the millions of Brits going on holiday in Spain every year.

It is a matter of Spanish pride but they should rightly not forger Ceuta and Melilla in North Africa.

This is just typical of Spain. They're basically the byatch of Argentina, and rather than complain about the Argies stealing their companies, they decide to turn on the British, who spend vaste amounts of money in Spain on holidays, buying property and associated trade. Simply because the Gibraltar economy isn't up the spout they decide to have a whinge-fest, rather than trying to understand why their own economy isn't going so well.

Someone should just have a card with 'Ceuta and Melilla' printed on it, and whenever they discuss Gibraltar, just casually hand over the card.

Less whinging, more work and selling, Spaniards.

Getting these hassles is getting boring. Aren't there some islands we can claim as British to balance it up a bit?

Maybe we should invade the Isle of Man and Sealand - they're both obviously British - especially if we say so often and loudly enough.

If Spain wants to tear up the Treaty of Utrecht, I wonder whether they'll start moaning about wanting Belgium and Luxembourg back..

The UK isn't provoking anyone. Any UK national is entitled to visit any UK territory. The fact that you choose to claim you are being provoked is your business and rather laughable.

It provokes displeasure and disconfort...........says the Spanish gov.
And again it is, Gibraltar, a territory claimed by Spain.
Queen Sofía can go to visit it also??

    @ Malen

Absolutely, Queen Sofia can visit. She can get her passport stamped, just like the Duke of Wessex will get his passport stamped. Did you think that the UK controls imigration to any BOT?

One would have thought that their king off elephant hunting causes the Spanish people more displeasure and discomfort. Both the Spanish and the Argentines are in severe economic trouble. Sovereignty of small islands that want nothing to do with them are always good for diverting their electorate from more serious and pressing issues. Many Brits have second homes in Spain and spend a lot of money there, i cant see them pushing this issue too far.

@13. As a resident I can tell you Argies are not welcome in Gib and the Spanish should never be trusted. Here's why:

Malen, Clearly you do not understand the fundamental difference between what was an old fashioned “Colony” where UK ruled and decided the laws(the sort of Colony Arg wrongly still talks about as regards the Falklands).
In a B.O.T. there is democratic Self Goverment and the BOT makes its own laws and controls its own Immigration etc etc. Exactly the same here. vistors from UK get their passport stamped as a “temporary entry tourist” - exactly the same as Argentine passports. a non resident British Passport holder cannot come here to live and work without firsat obtaining a work Permit - exactly the same as someone from Chile- Australia or Argentina.
UK got rid of colonialism in places like the Falklands and Gibraltar decades ago.

We should do the same with the britishs that come to live here. If they dont have work permit go home pirates.

@8 What is it about Spaniards and Spanish bastards? None of them can ever get over being beaten. Even when they sign a formal agreement. The Spaniards in 1713 and the argie scum in 1750. Still no “provocation” from the “British” side. Just defence.
@10 Of course, Queen Sofia can go visit. Just so long as she doesn't mind sitting in the queue the Spanish arrange every day. I hope she visits. Then she can personally experience the delays of up to four hours. Hope she enjoys that! Bit of “argie” attitude actually. The Spaniards have been doing it since the days of Franco. That would be in the 50s. That's about 60 years. There you go, argies, you can get an idea of how effective your actions will be. See that wonderful comparison. A virtually bankrupt, economically-retarded, dying Spain with a thriving, prosperous British territory just over the border. A virtually bankrupt, economically-retarded, dying argieland with a thriving, prosperous British territory several hundred miles away.
@13 Sorry, you can't send 3,000 argies. Not conducive to the public good. Also scum are unlikely to comply with health requirements. Not that it should stop argies applying. They may be able to contribute to the Falklands wealth. As fishbait! Argies. Travel to the Falklands. Help start a new industry. Shark fishing. Take a prominent role. Be one of the top-paid “employees”, if you survive. Don't be a wimp. Forget swimming with dolphins. Swim with sharks (for a while). You will be paid an incredible salary, if you can join the queue and hold out your hand (still connected) for your money. A calm attitude is essential. Do not apply if you think you may lose your head!

It's just a formality, none of this ever gets reported in Spain or the UK because no one cares that the Spanish Foreign Office has to go through these formalities.

But they are like Argentina STAGGERING HYPOCRITES - Spain should return its enclaves in North Africa to Morocco and it should return the Canary Islands to Morocco.

Gibraltar has been under the British flag, far longer than it was ever under a Spanish flag, it was for many centuries occupied by the Muslim rule 711- 1436 and after that Castilian rule until 1580 and then the Iberian Union.

They whinged when Princess Anne visited a while back, under the previous government, and that was when they were being “reasonable”. The most they can do is stamp their feet up and down and search each and every British / Gib car at the border for a couple of months. Nothing new here!

As a matter of interest the Gibraltan's are going to build a road-tunnel on the eastern side of the rock by the barracks to take traffic away from the runway and allow traffic to flow freely to and from the boarder crossing. (For those of you that don't know Gib, the traffic has to stop and wait everytime a plane lands/takes off).

This should speed up trade between Gib and Spain and ultimately benefit everyone.
