Ousted Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo addressed thousands of citizens outside the presidential palace and assured there had been a coup against democracy but also said he would respect the formality of the Senate’s decision and called on followers to march peacefully. Read full article

Jun 23rd, 2012 - 04:10 am - Link - Report abuse 0The next days and weeks will show the validity and indispensability of Unasur’s and Mercosur’s democratic clauses……..
Will be interesting to see where the USA goes on this one……….
PS……
Strange time the United Kingdom chose to open its new embassy in Paraguay….
I say old chap, multiple postings using the same identity? Strain beginning to tell, is it? Your analysis seems to be off-color too since it's hard not to see a vote in both Houses as the ultimate vote of no-confidence, the stepping up of the vice-president as an appropriate replacement and the prospect of litigation in the Supreme Court as the correct response. Still, you know how these Latin places work better than I do.

@3 By all means. It's so heart warming to know that Chabut Social Services send carers round to check on and cheer up the elderly citizens. In the depth of winter and on a weekend too. I trust you've offered her a cup of tea. Give her one from me, should you get the chance. Bye bye.

Lugo is being very gracious, perhaps too much so, in acceptin this process at all, it seems the time given to prepare his defence was clearly illegal. In a similar case the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Phillipines was impeached and it took a 6 month long Senate trial. Looks like the democracies of Latin America, and the strong women who lead Paraguay's only neighbours, are not taking this lying down...

Good point. I was actually glad when Tymoshenko lost as I never bought into that Orange Revolution guff, Yanukovich has really let himself down though by turning her into a hero all over again imho. (Btw my measured and critical views on Tymoshenko should serve as a corrective to those who think I only support Cristina because she's beautiful!)
@3 and @9. I'm not with you I'm afraid. She lost an election and was subsequently charged with criminality while he lost the confidence of allies in both parliamentary Houses and was consequently removed from the leadership by his Vice President.
