The Chilean Executive announced this week the new Intendente (governor) of the extreme south region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica. His name is Mauricio Peña y Lillo Correa and replaces Arturo Storaker who resigned to the post last 9 August.

According to the Deputy Minister of Interior, Maria Claudia Alemparte, the new Intendente will be taking office next 2 September. Peña y Lillo Correa is a chartered mechanical engineer and since 2010 has been head of the regional Corfo Office, which is Chile’s Promotion Corporation helping innovation and starting new businesses.

From 2005 to 2010 Peña y Lillo Correa was Magallanes regional advisor and was an active member of several committees: Promotion and development; Infrastructure, territorial development and heritage; Science, energy and new technologies and Interior.

He has been in politics for years and has been head of UDI in Magallanes, the conservative party (Independent Democratic Union) which together with RN (National Renovation) at national level conform the ruling coalition that supports President Sebastian Piñera.

Since he is named directly by the Chilean Executive the new Intendente will have full responsibility in supporting the Electoral authorities ahead of the October municipal elections and next year’s parliamentary ballot.

As of 2 September Ms Gloria Cilicic who was replacing Storaker as interim ‘Intendente’ will return to her normal post of Magallanes province governor. Storaker stepped down allegedly because of possible links with public works companies awarded contracts in the region.

The incoming Intendente is married and has four children
