Real estate sales in Buenos Aires City dropped for the eighth month running in July and 27.6% over a year ago because of the US dollar clamp according to the monthly evolution index of sales documents from the Notaries College of the Argentine capital. Read full article

It was debatable which would be the economic superpower, the US or Argentina. Argentina had the edge back then. I have to assume that is not taught in Argentine schools because it would highlight how far they fell.
They still have the resources to be wealthy and successful but there would have to be such a change in attitude across the whole country for that to ever be achieved. Many Argentines I speak to are aware of it but they tend to live in the now because they cannot trust to believe in a successful future.

Notice how Americans have become 10 fold more jingoistic in places like Yahoo! boards, or other forums, even here look at yankeeboy and poppy. I remember a time when they weren't so overt, they knew they were tops... but now they know they have fallen signficantly in education, standard of living, and economic importance.
The best proof of this was in 2008... with a financial crisis in the USA like the one they faced (the worst in 70 years), Latin America would have COLLAPSED. In fact, it used to be that when the USA had a recession Latin America had a financial meltdown... Asia would have a massive drop in growth, Europe would slow down, etc.
This time, NOTHING happened. Not even a blip in Latin America, Asia just kept on going, etc.
That's the future. They still have the military, but it is rented from China. When they wise up and stop lending money to them, they will have a military as powerful as Austria's.
Yankee do you happen to recall if the story about a community having their employees having a lottery to see which one will get paid.......mmmmmm, now was that in the United States or was that argentina? I think that in itself speaks more than anyone blogging on Mercos can possible debate about that state of financial affairs of a country.

Afterall, no one the the USA is telling it's citizens that it cannot purchase another countries currency, having the tax agency review your grocery purchases, tax and review internet and foreign purchases and to a point, tell you where to vacation. Not to mention allowing children and foreign residents to vote. Freedom like that, who needs to be incarcerated ?

It worked in the 50-80s when very few of them ever traveled outside of the country, there was no internet or Int'l TV. I think the smart ones realized they were on the bottom of the heap after 1978 when color/Intl Tv was introduced. Even then the old teachings were well ingrained. So the ones who have never traveled don't know how dirty and backward their Capital is not to mention the rest of the country.
When my Rg friends come to visit me we always go to NYC and they are gobsmacked. They ALWAYS say “They have no idea!” meaning people from BA have no idea what a sh*thole they are living in compared to NYC. What they don't understand until they spend enough time here is, we still have LA, Chicago, Miami, Dallas, Houston, DC, Boston, San Fran etc etc etc. They end up getting a little depressed when the lies they have been told all of their lives finally are realized. Did your wife have the same reaction?
You look at Toby's #27 post. He is so ill informed about the outside world it is a waste of time to respond to the post. People that have lived, worked, traveled to the USA know there is nothing like it in the world, know we aren't going any where soon and agree it is the best country in the world for business.

Which seems like a lot to an American but because of the difficulties you have to endure daily it is necessary if you want to get anything done!
The reason I moved back was because even being as insulated as I was it was still too difficult to live there, can't write check to pay bills, inflation getting out of control ( this was years ago! I can't imagine what it is like now), escalating , crime, kidnappings, commando assaults on our neighbor's houses, losing electricity when it rains, losing internet when it is windy on and on and it was really a bunch of little things that all add up to a pretty miserable lifestyle when you are used to the 1st world.
I still have a lot of friends and family there and from all accounts it is getting REALLY bad. They are all hunkered down waiting for it all to collapse. I am glad everyday I moved back to the USA.
I agree it is much more affordable to have someone cook, clean and do laundry than in the states. I typically stay in Recoleta when you go. House assaults/ invasions were rising incredibly in the suburban areas. I recall when I first went there and saw all the houses with walls or fences and thought they were for privacy as the states, but was immediately corrected that is was for security.

I liked it there until we got new neighbors and their barking dog drove me crazy so we moved way out to a really lovely Quinta with 25 hectares. It used to be used by one the their Presidents for “private meetings” whatever that means!

I had 12 foot walls, a guard in the front and the back, my neighbors had an old Estancia house next door with huge gates and guards. Then some of neighbors were having commando assaults on their houses! Multiple assaults through out the neighborhood! There were also lots of problems with robbers/kidnappers boxing in people's cars as they left the highway. Too scary for me so it was time to go home.
I hear there's a new protedt in the city (BA) for 9/13. They need to start banging those pots on heads.

The animated video recreates the Plaza de Mayo and filled by a crowd and Cristina coming out to give a message.
Then the video shows scenes that have sparked controversy and outrage on social networks.
The band is originally from Argentina and Venezuela and is clearly that through this video is seeking an absolute provocation.
The video was uploaded to YouTube several times, as in some accounts was censored by “highly erotic”.

Sep 08th, 2012 - 11:51 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Thats nonsense, the US “opened” Japan as far back as 1854 and was signing Unequal Treaties with China around the same time; by 1898 they had full scale colonies in the Pacific like the Phillipines, occupied Cuba and had been controlling much of the “backyard” for decades; while industry was built up very rapidly post-Civil War in the era of the “robber barons”. But if you had been right, and if Argentina had further consolidated its “edge” and become the world's only superpower (imagine Cristina as ruler of the world =) though if Argentina were America Cristina would be in opposition!) then what would have become of the Falklands. I imagine most of the right wingers on here would be parroting the Malvinista arguments to justify the recovery of the Islands by the new empire from the old! The actual arguments about the 1820s and 30s would be the same but the language of power would be different...

BUENOS AIRES, Aug. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- President Cristina Kirchner's popularity has fallen dramatically amid worries of high inflation according to Argentine polling company Management & Fit. Just 30% of Argentinians approve of her handling of the economy, an approval rating that has continued to drop over the last year.
According to reports, growing public discontent is largely a result of economic contraction and soaring inflation, which has eroded purchasing power. The nation's statistics agency, INDEC, reported an annual inflation rate of 9.9% in July, but private analysts estimate it is running well above 20%. The Kirchner Administration bans the publication of independent economic data that conflicts with the Government's reports and formally suspended three consumer-focused NGOs this week after they published inflation data that differed from official statistics.
