Hosting the Olympics two years after staging the World Cup was always going to be a big task but the success of London 2012 has raised the bar even further, according to Brazil's deputy sports minister Luis Fernandes. I think the art to making it a success is to ensure that every venue is stuffed to the rafters for every event. - oh - and don't bring your city to a standstill while you do it.

“There is a big difference between hosting the Olympics in a city like London and one like Rio,” said Fernandes, a soccer-loving Rio native. “We are a developing nation and Britain is one of the richest countries in the world and has infrastructure that was already set up”.

Yes and no. The infrastructure was not entirely in place. London spent £7 Billion on transport infrastructure for the games. This was essential for the games but also for the long-term future of the site. The Olympic Park was built on a former industrial wasteland from scratch. It will continue as a community with housing (50% affordable), facilitates, good transport links to the centre of London, shops and restaurants. It has regenerated a rather forgotten part of London.

Transport for London have been hired by Rio to advise on the transport logistics.

I hope Brazil and Rio host a fabulous Olympics in 2016. Good luck to the organisers, hope it runs smoothly and they can provide a fantastic spectacle for the rest of the world.

I expect a little chaos and a lot of carnival at Rio. They will be uniquely Brazilian and that is exactly what they should aim for. Each Olympics should be special to the host country.

little chaos is normal, no where in the world will something like this go “perfectly”. It will either go A: start okay/well but went wrong during the olympics and end up disappointed or okay after all... (Atlanta), B: it will be good or end in a disaster (Athens)..or C: it will be good and end up succesfully (Barcelona).

The state of Rio and the city target C and I hope for them it will be C.
You can think whatever you want now... we shall know at the end.
