    But surely the KFC model of squeezing the middle class dry and giving the money in handouts to people who haven't the slightest intention to work
    is the best economic model ?

    @1 We are a little guilty of that too in the UK I'm afraid to say, there is an element of UK society that will not work regardless of economic times. Even in the late 90's early 2000 there was still over a million unemployed because they didn't want to work and were and still are quite happy on state handouts.

    As a society we have rejected work that many think are below them such as cleaners, production operatives etc which has now been filled with immigrant workers who as a result ship all their cash back home.

    Ken - It is very simple to resolve: just stop giving them government hand outs. But then the politicians would loose votes and get scared that they won't be reelected. So I guess we will always have parasites living off the productive sector....such is life.
