    Can we say there's a good chance of Catalonia's secession from Spain? Yes we can. Let's compare Catalonia seceding from Spain to Scotland seceding from the UK. As Boovis pointed out in http://en.mercopress.com/2012/10/09/uk-displays-red-line-in-plan-to-merge-defence-giants-eads-and-bae-systems more than half of Scots would vote against independence. That figure will INCREASE as more and more Scots realise that Salmond doesn't have a clue. Except on how to lie. Catalonia is the most prosperous part of Spain and it seems that more than half of Catalans are now fed up with supporting the rest of the country. Catalonia's GDP is about 25% of that of Spain as a whole. Good luck to them I say. Catalans are already recognised as a nationality. They are autonomous. Let them go the whole way if they want. It's only Rajoy's dictatorial PP party that sees it differently!

    @1 Conquerer It's at 50% right now because of the Olympics, but the figure will surely increase in favour of independence because of the coalition government. It is the pieces of shit in Westminster that are ruining Scotland, along with the rest of the UK. We however, can't stand the Tories, Lib Dems or Labour so we'll vote for independence.
    I don't hate England, but just want to be separated and have our own national identity. I for one really want to have a Scottish passport, than a British one.
    Hope you understand my perspective.

    *1 Cataluña (not catalonia) is totally bankrupt. A region that has been governed by the catalan´s nationalt party and by which the central government has just bailed out with 5 billion Euros. The most prosperous region in Spain is Madrid not Cataluña.Do not compare The Scots with Cataluña.The Scots had their own Kingdom while the Catalans were a region within the Kingdom Of Aragon. The parliament has voted thAT it will not accept any secession. So they Can cry out as much as they want but as long as the rest of Spain says NO. NO IT WILL BE. End of story.

    “Spain maintains its active commitment to a just, long-lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the dispute ..., one that foresees the self-determination of the people ...in accordance with the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter.”

    Mr Rajoy only stands by this statement if the wind is blowing in his chosen direction.

    @5 THEMan

    Speaking as someone who is more-or-less completely English (for at least the last couple of generations), I can hardly object to you wanting to declare independence from Westminster. I only wish that we could do the same.

    I think the ideal solution would have been to relocate parliament and all of the politicians to Gruinard (preferably pre-1986).
