@3 Isnt Guyana an independent country who “threw of the shackles of British imperialism” many years ago? So why is Venezuela claiming half thier country? Imperialismo boliviano a la Chavez?

    @3 and @7

It looks like Chavez is planning on annexing Guyana, perhaps the Guyanan's should ask the British to set up a military base there to keep the Venezulans out. :)

Well Venezula does claim land in Guyana. This goes back to the 19th century and a dispute between the British Empire and Venezula, and was the subject of an international arbitration in 1899, which found in favour of the British Empire.

Both the British Empire and Venezula accepted the results of that arbitration in 1905 signed a treaty and the matter was settled.

That is until Guyana became independent in 1966, when Venezula suddenly decided that it wanted the land it previously accepted as being Guyanan. Strange that, isn't it?

I honestly wouldn't put it past Chavez to try a land grab at some point. However, Guyana is a member of the Commonwealth, so would have the support of all 50 odd members, including the UK, Canada, Australia, South Africa, India, Pakistan etc. who could all send troops, ships and planes to remove any illegal Venezulan presence, whilst at the same time calling upon the UNSC to put sanctions against Venezula for its aggressive act.

In fact, many Venezulan maps show this Guyanan territory as Venezulan which is probably why the Mercosur map is the way it is. This is apparently what they think: “If we tell everyone often enough its our territory and draw maps that show its our territory then surely it must be our territory, despite the fact that we signed a treaty to the effect that it wasn't our territory.” (sound familiar?)

However, the real world doesn't work like that.

@14 The EU isn't a settlement agreement. You're comparing the incomparable.

It is a trade union, a union our govenment said we wanted to stay in as long as it stayed a trade union when they first joined. It is now rapidly becoming a political union run by Germans - who lets face it do not have the greatest track record and considering we had to fight them off twice to make sure the world wasn't brought under their yoke. Something us Brits would do anything not to be under.

I dunno if you are aware but Hong Kong was handed over to the Chinese in 1997 under a 99 year lease agreement. Prior to that it was practically nothing.

I have never heard of any such thing hear in the UK suggesting that we would 're-take' something which we effectively borrowed for 100 years and made into something great along the way. It would be completely illegal to do so and would severely damage the UKs prestige.

With reflection to our military; the size of our military might be meger compared to that of the Chinese, however it's level of training, expertise and technology is rivalled by none in many areas. I have no doubt that in a tussle our boys would hold our own. Particularly against the Chinese navy.

We are a sovereign nation Guzz, ask the UN and every single international organisation in the world. Just because we can actually get on with other counties does not mean that we are their lap dogs or under their boot; as you can quite clearly see with the EU controversy. The UK and the USA have their disagreements every now and then and contrary to what you might think the UK populas are not as fond of the US populas as they are us.

We play the game and we do great at it and you only wish your country could. But until it stops behaving like a little spoilt brat and more like an adult and actually starts being friendly with nations then it will forever be nowhere.

    Salut!

Technically HK island and then later Kowloon were ceded in perpetuity, it was only the New Territories that were leased. However, returning only the New Territories would have created an untenable situation thus the British Government decided (in consultation with the PRC) to return the entire territory in exchange for guarantees on various civil liberties. *

With the possible exception of some fringe members of the Conservative party (and none that I actually know of) no one with any power has suggested “taking back” HK.

    So... you're talking crap.

Agreeing frameworks for discussion is an admission that you've actually agreed nothing. Claiming progress is wishful thinking - especially when you consider that any agreement includes both Argentina and Venezuela. One notorious for not abiding by their agreements and the other notorious for not agreeing with anyone.

This “Association Agreement” has to be STOPPED. Not “paused”, “suspended” or any other mealy-mouthed phrase. STOPPED! What “association” do WE want to have with 40 million argie war criminals? What “association” do WE want to have with dictators such as CFK and Chavez? What “association” do WE want with backward “countries” that use banned “veterinary” drugs on animals? Drugs that feed through into the human food chain. What “association” do WE want with countries that spray crops with chemicals that injure the health of people living nearby? And what is the effect on people who actually “eat” the crap? Argie “manufactured” goods? They couldn't put bolt B through part A and get it right. Look back and check out the comments of some Chilean friends on argie “manufactured” goods. If you're in Europe, contact your MEP. Demand this be stopped. Mercosur interrupts the democratic process. Mercosur interferes in internal domestic affairs. Mercosur is a dictatorship of tyrannies. In time, there will be a war. When mercosur will be destroyed. There is no alternative. Mercosur doesn't believe in freedom, honesty or democracy. It believes in power. Was it only 73 years ago that we had to contend with the same immorality in Europe? Let's be sensible. Perhaps we can avoid wiping the faggot-turds off the face of the planet. Perhaps we can starve or freeze them to death!

European good looks? an oxymoron. All the tales and children stories about ogres, trolls, lepricons, orcs, and vampires come from Eastern, Northern, and Southern Europe.

Europeans are big boned with big noses, oily faces, or hairy. Japanese people are beauty.

87@ it doesn't make sense what you are saying,,,no one in Panama or Ecuador knows what is a Porteño..to them all argies are white, tall, bearded men who look like the conquistadors, they look like Spanish, and everyone in LA hates the Spanish..

..people in Argentina have a different culture, they don't listen salsa, they speak differently, they say they are not latinos,,,why would any latino defend a person who is a shamed of being a latino and is a wannabe European?

people in their little countries just worry about their governments, their taxes, their laws,,etc..they don't have time to think about a distant country somewhere far away

I admire latino culture of salsa, mambo, vallenato, and samba, candomble, etc. We enjoy doing karaoke on these tunes every thursday night after work to get our happy juices flowing for the weekend. We sing well till 10:30 at night.

Argentines are not european, however, do not vilipend them in such an abominable fashion. Say you want to kill them, that they should be nuked, or erradicated by implanting small pox on them, but don't say to them something as bad as being european.

Education is freer in Mendoza than Europe or the USA.
Mendoza has modern expressways, one of the largest electric trolley systems, and a brand new metro.
    Food is plentiful everywhere
water is clean both from the pristine mountains (no pristine environments exist in Europe or North America), and by the water purification
    pure air, water, and sorroundings
ski, rafting, wine tasting, trekking, horse riding, culture, night clubs abundant
crime is down for 5 years in a row

Things we achieved in 100 years. Europe took 2000 years, the poor Neanderthals.

Amazing how Argentina's inflation is stubborn in its resistance to breach 10%, remaining as it does at 9.9%, almost unbelievable.

Unofficial inflation rate currently 24.33% - sources cannot be disclosed over fear of prosecution.

Expected inflation remains at 30% according to monthly report published by Torcuato Di Tella University (UTDT), note that this is merely an 'expectation' and thus avoids prosecution.

It's actually quite easy to keep inflation under 10% when government policy is to make up the figure on the back of a napkin.

Argentina will be censured by the IMF but they will live with the sanction and won't change their policy. Simple reason is it's cheaper. Admitting real inflation would cost billions.
