A very nasty scenario for Paraguay. It will now be completely surrounded. Does it have a “corridor” to the Pacific as envisaged in UNCLOS? Even if it does, it would be dependent on argie and Bolivian “goodwill”.

More political/ideological than anything else, and these recent “acquisitions” will alter still further the ideological balance (or lack of) in the organisation
Raises the question how is Brazil going to get a trade agreement with the EU, if not unilaterally, now there is little if any at all prospect of it with murcosur.

I am very wary of supranational organisations and wish very strongly for Chile to remain on the margin of MS like the Scandies in Europe (hence I understand Chris’ concerns for Uruguay). Although the idea of forming a regional behemoth to fight our corner against the other big blocks in the world is a very tempting idea we must be careful what we wish for.
In the EU no one country gets its way all the time. Germany is big, but relatively it is only slightly larger than France and the UK. Here, Brazil is half the territory and half the economy of South America. Economic integration will undoubtedly bring benefits to all, but they will increasingly have to dance to Brazil’s tune. In time perceived (or real) loss of sovereignty will become an issue outside of Brazil.
Seeing as we can achieve the economic growth anyway by increasing trade and investment between countries in the region (and continue to expand outside the region), why add the unelected bureaucrats and incursions on sovereign affairs?

The process takes over ten years of pain and hardship to get through, you guys gave it up as soon as the going got tough, we in Chile persisted and sure we had 30% unemployment, severe contraction in our GDP, wholesale bankruptcies of inefficient protected industries etc, but look at us now! The only creditor nation in the Castellano speaking universe, a balanced fiscal position as the norm ( we aim for 2% of GDP surpluses annually), two massive anti cyclical savings accounts, growing wages in real terms, almost full employment, the lowest inflation in Latin America, Plus reforms. reforms and more God damned reforms. Our professional and almost non corrupt political leaders of both parties share in their commitment to FREE trade with everyone and entangling alliances with none. Take note as we pass you by on the FAST lane Argentina. You guys should have stuck to the liberal plan, your loss.

- We have the lowest borrowing costs in the developing world. Recent 10-year bonds issued at 2.38% were oversubscribed 600%.
While the Argies pass around the begging bowl we have to beat investors off with a big stick. While no system is perfect, we have a very pragmatic model which slowly and surely is giving results – the Chilean way: de atrás pica el Indio!
The other Indio picando is Humala. If things carry on as they are, Argentina will have to watch Peru pass them in the fast lane.

You might mean the 1980s not 70s. I do remember a grotesque Argie land grab in ’82 that would have continued to Tierra del Fuego if the Brits hadn’t put half your air force in the bottom of the Atlantic.
Since independence Argentina has tried to take land off all its neighbours. That is 180 years of tension versus 20 years of relatively good relations (the latter just happen to coincide with Argentina having a dilapidated military, who would have thought it!). Given Argie’s long held designs on our territory we would be extremely foolish (which we are not) to base long-term strategic plans on the attitude of your current administration. Remember the story of the 3 little pigs? That’s right, we building this house of stone.
No one is trolling to keep us separated. We are separate and intend to stay that way. Happy to be a good neighbour, no more, no less.

Pugol. Re Paraguayan Warperhaps youshould read a bit of impartial history before sounding off. Brits didnt take part but they certainly financed the combatants. However the reasons the war happened in the first place had absolutely nothing to do with the British, purely a S. American dynamic.
