Bolivia accepted the official invitation to become full member of Mercosur and hopes to sign the first accords during the coming summit of the block in early December in Brasilia, said President Evo Morales. Read full article
A very nasty scenario for Paraguay. It will now be completely surrounded. Does it have a corridor to the Pacific as envisaged in UNCLOS? Even if it does, it would be dependent on argie and Bolivian goodwill.
@7 Idlehands
Not much of a trade organisation these days, murcosur.
More political/ideological than anything else, and these recent “acquisitions” will alter still further the ideological balance (or lack of) in the organisation
Raises the question how is Brazil going to get a trade agreement with the EU, if not unilaterally, now there is little if any at all prospect of it with murcosur.
comment from Chrisretard the web based research clown and still can't speak Spanish...Pity that includes Uruguay.
Uruguay a nation in the South American sub continent is in that group because they understand it is in their interest to be with their close friends in good and bad times. That something a kid (yeah I really believe you're an adult that sold his gold to live in Uruguay..sure, lolz) simply doesn't understand, that types nonsene, isn't even born there, didn't grew up in that area and has no knowledge of the region at all.

You don't even know what the word communist means. For communism/fascism, look at your own country, the best example of fascism...(a merger of state and corporations
you remind me of a drowning man you will reach for anything. Communist party's are allowed in free countries. Yes....there merger of state and corprations, like assmouth kirchner stealing PPF and nationalizing aerolinas
Fido,
As you are Dutch, do you feel as strongly about the EU as you do for MS?
I am very wary of supranational organisations and wish very strongly for Chile to remain on the margin of MS like the Scandies in Europe (hence I understand Chris’ concerns for Uruguay). Although the idea of forming a regional behemoth to fight our corner against the other big blocks in the world is a very tempting idea we must be careful what we wish for.
In the EU no one country gets its way all the time. Germany is big, but relatively it is only slightly larger than France and the UK. Here, Brazil is half the territory and half the economy of South America. Economic integration will undoubtedly bring benefits to all, but they will increasingly have to dance to Brazil’s tune. In time perceived (or real) loss of sovereignty will become an issue outside of Brazil.
Seeing as we can achieve the economic growth anyway by increasing trade and investment between countries in the region (and continue to expand outside the region), why add the unelected bureaucrats and incursions on sovereign affairs?

I thin the United Mercosurians will go by the way of the CSA in 1865. There are too many ego issues with the leaders. Hell, argentina is hardly large enough for TMBOA's head, yet er level of economic prowess can fit neatly in her bidet.
@35 Doesnt matter about your English. Welcome to the debate. But does Brazil have any need of the mercosur? You seem to be doing pretty good on your own
@44 You do understand that CFK is a rapacious cow intent upon becoming Empress of LatAm, don't you? Temporarily, Hugo is slated as Prince Consort. Let's see now, argieland and its province, currently called Uruguay but not for much longer, from the south. Venezuela from the north. Classic really!
The sad over-expansion of an organisation already too big, too big for its own boots and too politicised to be a trading bloc.
Sad, it could have worked, but not now.
@46 Conks You may think Uruguayans are submissive idiots. Well we have our little country and prize our independence. We have no dreams of La Patria Grande as suggested by some trolls on these blogs, of course in that case, under Argentine domination. Political divisions apart I think every Uruguayan treasures our country and traditions and way of life. We dont want to be a province of Argentina. We are US and nobody else
Uruguay is independent because Brazil don't want a Silver River in Argentinian's hand. And more, Cisplatina (Uruguay) have much from Sacramento (Portuguese colony) changed in XVIII Century for our Rio Grande do Sul. So, Cisplatina have one bit from Brazil!
Congratulations to Evo and his Bolivian compatriotas. Another dud joins the biggest dud pretend free trade block in the world. Maybe he thinks they'll help him get his ocean back. No chance pal.

@55 Pugol-H
Planning to attack Chile??? You must be joking! Or maybe you're living in the 1970s? Ohhh or maybe you're trolling to keep us separated ;)
@PHG.
The reason that the liberal reforms didn't work is that Argentinians didn't give them a chance. The process takes over ten years of pain and hardship to get through, you guys gave it up as soon as the going got tough, we in Chile persisted and sure we had 30% unemployment, severe contraction in our GDP, wholesale bankruptcies of inefficient protected industries etc, but look at us now! The only creditor nation in the Castellano speaking universe, a balanced fiscal position as the norm ( we aim for 2% of GDP surpluses annually), two massive anti cyclical savings accounts, growing wages in real terms, almost full employment, the lowest inflation in Latin America, Plus reforms. reforms and more God damned reforms. Our professional and almost non corrupt political leaders of both parties share in their commitment to FREE trade with everyone and entangling alliances with none. Take note as we pass you by on the FAST lane Argentina. You guys should have stuck to the liberal plan, your loss.
TCP
Well said TCP. I would add to your list:
- We have the lowest borrowing costs in the developing world. Recent 10-year bonds issued at 2.38% were oversubscribed 600%.
While the Argies pass around the begging bowl we have to beat investors off with a big stick. While no system is perfect, we have a very pragmatic model which slowly and surely is giving results – the Chilean way: de atrás pica el Indio!
The other Indio picando is Humala. If things carry on as they are, Argentina will have to watch Peru pass them in the fast lane.
PGH
““Planning to attack Chile”??? You must be joking! Or maybe you're living in the 1970s? Ohhh or maybe you're trolling to keep us separated ;)”
You might mean the 1980s not 70s. I do remember a grotesque Argie land grab in ’82 that would have continued to Tierra del Fuego if the Brits hadn’t put half your air force in the bottom of the Atlantic.
Since independence Argentina has tried to take land off all its neighbours. That is 180 years of tension versus 20 years of relatively good relations (the latter just happen to coincide with Argentina having a dilapidated military, who would have thought it!). Given Argie’s long held designs on our territory we would be extremely foolish (which we are not) to base long-term strategic plans on the attitude of your current administration. Remember the story of the 3 little pigs? That’s right, we building this house of stone.
No one is trolling to keep us separated. We are separate and intend to stay that way. Happy to be a good neighbour, no more, no less.

People thought then as now, money to be made.
