Full article 274 comments

P&O, a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation Plc and one of the world’s leading cruise operators will be omitting Puerto Madryn, Ushuaia and Buenos Aires from its 2013 season because of the difficulties encountered by its red ensign vessels in Argentine ports during recent months. However the company confirms that the vessels will continue to call in the Falkland Islands. Read full article

Brilliant news, lets hope more cruise line company's follow suit and refuse to be intimidated and dictated to. It just amazes me how thick these Argies are, did they really think they could bully these cruise liners into not visiting the FI !!!

They go crying to every known UN organisation for the least little thing then try to intimidate and bully these big multinational cruise line company's into basically altering their travel itinerary's to suit there twisted ends.

Gun point to foot, pull trigger = Argentine foreign policy as dictated by the government sponsored militia!!!

But I thought Argentines said the cruise lines would never omit Argentina from their itineraries.

It does not take much thinking to realise that cruise ship passengers are holidaying. They are paying to have a break from work, rest, have fun, and visit some interesting destinations. They do not want to get caught up in disputes, or be threatened, or have to endure gangs of state sponsored thugs joining them onboard. And the cruise lines have to consider the safety of their passengers.

This could escalate if the Argentine government does not put a stop to this nonsense. Word spreads quickly in tourism. Cruise lines are not stopping in Argentina because it is too dangerous? They could lose their hard-fought slice of South American tourism, the associated jobs and the dollars CFKC loves so much.

This will purely be an issue of insurance and security. One simply cannot protect the assets, customers and staff of the tour companies in Argentina because of a reincarnation of the Sturm Abteilung troopers under argentinian government control.

Better just avoid the place entirely and pay less insurance.

@8 You know what the reaction will be. “We didn't want or need the cruise business anyway” and “Keep all the foreigners out, we don't need them”. It is a selfish perspective considering the efforts Argentina has made to build a tourism industry. They have worked hard at making the country a holiday destination with diverse attractions and it generates a lot jobs and hard currency for the country. This may only be one cruise line to start with but the tourism industry is inclined to follow suit if it thinks customers are at risk.

Argentina's loss will be Chile's gain. Chile's tourism is still in infancy and has huge potential. No doubt they will quietly profit from the cock-up of their neighbours whilst making soothing noises to the mad woman CFKC.

They have 2 choices: a) avoid argentina completely; or b) hire a squad of mercenaries to protect the assets, customers and staff from the government Sturm Abteilung. I'd imagine the same could be said if plane companies were having their passengers and pilots forced to sign faux-contracts by government sponsored thugs. You would immediately close the service.

To be fair it is only two ships and one call each at the Falklands so not much in the grand scheme of things, but it is the correct decision from P&O and if their parent company were to follow their lead for their other divisions then it would be significant.

Indeed. But every cloud has a silver lining: B.A.'s loss is Montevideo's gain. I'm sure Uruguay will be delighted at this news. More dollars for them, and nothing for Argentina.

Ah, yes, TMBOA's economic model is still in full action.

    @11 - Huntsman

I think the IMF are taking pity on the people of Argentina by not upsetting the apple cart over the holiday period.

Unfortunately, Argentina won't be having a Happy New Year, as the IMF will give them the boot. That means NO ONE will lend them any money, and no company will risk investing in Argentina. Cristina's 'buddy' is on his last legs, and there is no guarantee that his successor will keep throwing Venezulan money at the hopeless case that Argentina has become.

'By Falkland, a giant of the cruise ships will not come to the Argentina - Carnival Group, one of the largest operators of cruise ships in the world, suspended Argentine ports of your 2013 season, which undoubtedly will have an important impact in the cities involved, which include Ushuaia, Puerto Madryn and Buenos Aires.
The latter will be replaced by the port of Montevideo, said today in a statement the group, who is of British origin and who opted for Falklands and United Kingdom when choosing which ports tied.
Ushuaia tourist industry already complained about the impact that will have the measure through the Agency Mercopress...'

I think that Argentina will try to bully Uruguay into refusing the P & O cruise ships. It will be a test to see if they will stand up to CFKC considering she has already tried to damage Uruguayan tourism by telling Argentines not to go there.

I am sure this will be written off by the Argentine government at just two ships from a British company but the effects could be so much more.

It is about time we had something back from The Dark Country and I really hope that Carnival follows the trend.

Insurance concerns alone would dictate that must be a no-brainer, never mind customer safety and satisfaction.

There are great English speaking Policia Touristica specially trained in assisting foreign tourists in all the main areas: MVD, Punta del Este and Piriapolis. Their use has cut casual crime down enormously. They are easily recognised, they have little white cars with Policia Tourista very prominently displayed on both sides of the vehicle and to encourage tourists to consult them they park up in shopping areas and hand out leaflets about the area.

Great big cruise ship in Punta bay yesterday with all the tenders ferrying passengers to the harbour. At least two (Americans) made straight for McDonalds at Punta Shopping and sat near to us. They just love Uruguay having been here twice previously.

I didn’t want to upset their holiday by asking if they had ever been to BsAs or Argentina in general. ;o)

The chinese say, 'sow good, reap good; sow evil, reap evil' and let's face facts, this is all as a result of Argentinians not ultimately caring about the customer.

They seem to think people should just turn up to their cities and spend all their money without anyone having to do anything. They blame neo-liberalism for no one buying their products, when I'm guessing they did nothing to sell or market them. It's like they think the business is more than it's customers...

Aside from the Falklands issue, Buenos Aires should be dropped by all cruises and all tour companies because it has become really dangerous. Just last month I was there (reluctantly) for a few hours did a bit of shopping in Florida St and having just walked across (on the green pedestrian light) the wide main road at the top end (cant think of its name now) a maniacal-looking thug jumped on my back, grabbed my arm, wrestled my watch off, jumped back onto the pillion of a motorbike and off they went. This was in the middle of the day, on the equivalent of Oxford St, with thousands of people around - not one of whom appeared to notice. This is the 3rd time I have been robbed in BA, it really is a bad place, and this from someone who has spent many years in South Africa (mostly Cape Town) where nothing like this has ever happened to me. Like most people I didn't report the incident because I would have just wasted hours and most of the Arg police are crooks too - any Argie will agree with this. If the true (unpublicised, undocumented) crime stats were known, most responsible govts would be gving warning advisories. BA is a filthy and awful city, run by a corrupt govt - why would anyone, never mind Falklanders, want to be part of such a grubby country? Why cant the brain-dead morons screaming “Malvinas son Argentinas” understand that ???

I believe it is in the interests of the entire cruise industry to boycott Argentina as a whole. If that were to happen then Argentina would soon abandon this daft policy and guarantee everybodys safety so that the world and the cruise lines can return to normal sanity. Otherwise it might set a precedent and start to occur in other regions of the world over equally daft and unrelated issues.

The alternative will be a split between those that only go to one or the other whereby they both lose out to Chile.

You don't have any leverage that is substantial enough to change our behavior. Not just you, neither the USA, EU, Brazil, Mercosur, China do... as you can see by our repeated escalations on all fronts, for years on end.

The rest of the world has had almost 15 years now to teach us a lesson (since 2000), and we are still waiting for the magic bullet to humiliate us to submission, allow you to destroy our economy by flooding your products in, have the government give up the Malvinismo, and make us pay our debts, and do as you say in anything else you fancy.

Toby, there is no magic bullet, your destruction will be a series of small cuts until the economy bleeds to death.
And you didn't have “the world against you” until CFK shut off imports, which was this year. So now there is a coordinated effort with the USA leading the charge as pay back for boarding our military jet,
So it's only been a relatively short time that Arg has been in our sites. The Int'l community and laws move slow and steady. Everything is in motion now to destroy your economy.
Quite frankly it has gone on much longer than I imagined. Look how long Iran has held on but with both of you it won't be much longer now.
The path to a generational depression is assured.

@72 In rural india, female infanticide is quite common, and it's not unheard of to simply euthenise the baby and throw them on the pile with the pigs. Sometimes they tie them to a stick in the ground. And to be fair some lady in Wolverhampton threw her baby down a 50ft rubbish chute, so it's not like these events are uncommon.

The world we live in, is very different to the world lived in by others.

LOL this must be a joke even though 12 months oldAt a luncheon recently held in London, the Minister of Tourism for Argentina, Enrique Meyer and other guests launched Argentina's new plan to promote investment in the country's tourist trade; this includes the beginning of British Airways providing non-stop flights travelling between London and Buenos Aires beginning in March 2011.

“2011 will be the year of Argentina,” Mr Meyer said.

Guests at the luncheon included a select group which included CEOs of hospitality and real estate conglomerates as well as private equity and investment fund directors.

Explaining the plan, Mr Meyer talked of significant investment in Argentina's tourism infrastructure and training, saying:

”Argentina has the best prepared and best educated population in South America. This translates into superior service and greater customer satisfaction.

We really don't want an enemy if Argentina at all. You should look at this situation and reflect on it. You chose to use terrorism to try and harm the Falkland Islands economy. When has terrorism ever worked anywhere as a workable tactic against the UK. The Foreign Office has been very busy behind the scenes, quietly and proficiently dealing with Argentina at every turn. What this should reach you is if you try to hurt the Falklands economically, we will hurt you harder.

    @114

Then it is centuries. The Falklands in this scenario are not the focus but rather a manifestation of the larger point. Argentina has many grievances with the world, since the 1800s, in other areas, and we have not forgotten those either.

The main point being... the world severely undersestimates our capacity for long-term rancor. Most societies may forgive and forget within years... we take centuries. So the IMF, the WTO all that stuff you are doing to us... the world can forget about Argentina being a responsible, helpfu country for at least till 2070-2080 if not beyond. Because all alive today in Argentina will never move on.

Look at how we still don't forgive, or adore, Peron, depending on your view. Look how we still fret over things that ocurred in 1900.

That's proof enough, that the world has made us a VERY long-term problem. Perhaps, if they had traded with us fairly (not tried to destroy our economy), if they had done other things respectfuly, it would have been different.

    Too late.

They are cancelling their schedules because of the actions of your shit president and her thugs. That's why people are putting your country down and to do that in connection with this story is justifiable.

If you want to condemn all of the non-Argentine countries, and clearly you do, fuck off onto an appropriate site somewhere and do it there.

The shooting figures in the US are dire- I agree with you. But remember this young man. The murder rate for Argentina is only fractionally (not even tangible to people going about their lives in both countries) lower that that of the USA.

Bloggs, this stuff is totally relevante here in fact. You people are bitching, bleating, whinging, ululating about two “thugs” roughing up some office of a cruise operator. You call it uncivilized...

What is someone going in with a nut, getting within touching distance of a CHILD (A LITTLE THING), and STABBING THEM!!!!

About someone going to a movie theater, a spa, a mall, a bloody elemantary and just shooting little kids, adolescents, and old people and splattering their heads!!

Trying to steal the territory of other countries, pilfering the assets of other countries, bullying its neighbours, reneging on debts, wriggling out of legal judgements, riots, toxic gas clouds, rampant crime, La Campora, scum attacking cruise lines, brainwashing school children with false history lessons, having ships seized by bailiffs, military vessels falling apart from neglect, giddy levels of inflation, record levels of WTO disputes, INDEC's blatant lies... There are probably a few dozen other things I've forgotten.

Basically, when is the last time Argentina actually did *anything* positive, impressive or worthy of praise? Nobody is interested in subjugating you, Tobi. No one would give a shit about a third-rate power like Argentina if it just conducted itself like a normal 21st century country, rather than a thieving basket case out to cause as much trouble and discord as possible.

You antis are a joke Elaine. There is nothing you say that can be believed in regards to Argentina. You in particular are an adroit confabulator, pace all other antis.

I'm not certain which of you is better, the antis who spit out mendacities filled with so much hyperbole and fantasy they qualify as mere jesters, or people like yourself who actually occasionaly do decide to redact some veracious information but then proceed to intersperse sly innacuracies.

I proffered my opinion. It is a British company, they have a political agenda. That is fine. You have a problem with comprehension. I limpidly wrote that “ships with legs in the Falklands” didn't apply to my overall assessment.

Subreption is a poor rhetorical device Elaine. Next time sleuth the entirety of my statements and then draw the appropriate illative.

What part didn't you understand? I am not wrong, the first analysis I made included the commmentary that “surely those ships that stop in the Falklands are filled with antis for the most part”... most people here will recall this statetement.

So far only a British company with stops in the Falklands has desisted from argieland, out of patriotism, which I respect.

I have not been proven incorrect, go read upon the concept of Subreption. You may not know what that means, but it is exactly what the act you are performing. It is tactically weak strategy amongst those of us with higher literacy... which is whom you should be trying to emulate anyway. But if you are satisfied with impressing the linguistically average individual here (nothing wrong with being that, I'm sure they are more resourceful in other areas), then you may in fact succeed.

The bit I had trouble with is; ''I limpidly wrote that “ships with legs in the Falklands” etc

Firstly because this is an incorrect use of 'limpid'. Whatever your English learner's thesaurus may tell you, modern English only uses 'limpid' to mean 'clear' in a literal sense, as in pools of water.
Secondly 'ships with legs in the Falklands' isn't clear (or even limpid). It's just gobbledegook.
Nobody's going to try to emulate you, because you're writing this from the naughty corner, where your teacher has put you on account of your colossal arrogance and failure to write basic intelligible modern English.

You aren't a strong debater. You use glaring logical fallacies on a daily basis, and if someone points them out to you, you ignore it and sail serenely on to the next one.

You must find a way to do it. Via Chile is probably your best option, especially if you want to spend 2 weeks. You can only do 1 if you go via Argentina. It sure is a beautiful BOT and, even though I am biased, I have been to pretty well all of them so I can compare. St Helena has eluded me but I am about to go. Everyone who has been, and all of my many St Helenian friends assure me it is beautiful. Montserrat is one of my favourite Caribbean BOTs even though it doesn't have the beautiful beaches like a lot of other people like.

If you go to the Falklands make it for two weeks and book a decent itinerary before you go. Don't just turn up in Stanley and try it figure it out; you won't get to see the best places. Stanley Services or International Tours and Travel (both locally based) are the best agencies to book through. Just ask me if you ever get the chance and I can give you all the details.

It is just a sad indictment of everything that is wrong with the cronyism and shortsighted of Argentina, its government and people. Such a loss not to be able to visit BsAs but it is not worth the hassle, danger and petty bureaucracy that entering and leaving Argentina has become. Again, Chile and Uruguay will reap the benefits. Montevideo has a great future and is in many ways easier and more congenial for tourist day trippers and Chile is already attracting Chinese, Australian and other companies from functional economies as their South American bases. Personally, I used to get to BsAs at least once a year for business and a holiday. Business is drying up; the dirt, oppression and disfunctional financial environment has taken the pleasure out of spending personal time there. Is it is as bad in the other Argentinian cities? So so sad.

All this bodes well for the deep sea port in the Falklands. I believe shipping, not just cruise liners, will be a very important part of the economy in the Islands in the future and that unless Argentina try growing up, they will lose a lot of trade in the south as the new port in the FI conjoins with Chile.

Let's make no mistake, Chile Uruguay and Brazil are siding with Argentina over the Argentines claim to wind them up to make more F ups so that they as a nearby power are diminished. If they were all solid behind Argentina's claim then none of those countries would have any contact with the Falkland Islands or the UK whatsoever. In fact the Argentine would be a bigger threat to the Islands if they were actually friendly, logic, (cause and effect) which has bypassed them and if they lost their 'Argentina is always the victim' pathetisism.

All is peaceful around the Falklands, now. And you know RN ships can't come near Argentina ports.

I was talking about the staged terrorist attack, complete with photographer, on a cruise ship booking office in Buenos Aires. Lots of threats and broken glass, along with demands that Cruise ships do not visit the Falklands.

CFK and her band of sad Malvinistas tell everyone that Uruguay and Chile on on their side. After all, that is what their presidents told her. But what are they doing to support her? Apart from saying they are supporting her. Ha ha. NOTHING! In fact they are doing things to thwart CFK. LAN is backward and forward each Saturday, the ships are to and fro between both of those SA countries and the Falklands. Our business communities are trading heavily and planning more trade all the time. Uruguay and Chile have both sent Government-supported trade delegations to the Falklands recently.

Yet another front opens up in Argentina’s eternal wars, against all and sundry.

Once the Falklands open their new deep water port, the rampant inflation, imploding economy and associated instability in Argentina will make the islands the preferred destination, by far.

Does anybody on the Falklands (there are STILL no Malvinas you prats) have access to either the official LR software package or to a clone (of which there are a few now)? It is vital to use the updates on a regular basis because LR are always ironing out bugs mainly to the body computer.

Funny things happen quite often with the electrics and the canbus: these can be problamatical to cure to say the least. May I suggest you contact LR direct if you are unsure about access to the right equipment. They have been known to LOAN this stuff if they think it will increase sales.

Argentina a very silly but also a very sadly comical story as it continues to self-distruct...a country that relies a lot on tourism dollars is doing its very best to destroy its reputation as a worthwhile and safe destination to visit. I have a workmate here in Sydney who is setting off to Buenos Aires and Iguacu, before heading off to Ushuaia to take a cruise to the Falklands and onto South Georgia and Antartica.....thanks to these silly muppets that support CFK and may well need to follow my advice and head off to Punta Arenas.....still, as an Aussie married to a Chilean, I can assure him like anyone else that Punta Arenas is destination worth visiting in its own right and offers the exciting prospect of not only sailing or flying off to Antartica, but heading up to Puerta Natales and the world class Torres del National Park, three hours up the road from Punta Arenas.

Good effort Malvinistas, Chileans will welcome your efforts to promote their nation as a more viable and safer tourist destination...keep shooting yourselves in the foot....by the way, I was talking to an Argentinian mother, with a boy in my son's cricket team, who shakes her head in disgust at the Malvinistas silly exploits....Argentina really does deserve better, but its not helped by a poor education system that promotes such foolishness.

As for fools like Timmerman, etc....a very sadly pathetic ruling class is dragging that nation down the toilet. Still, if their economy continues to hit the skids, even many of their supporters will start to see the writing on the wall.

The Argentine National Academy of History considered in 1966 that Rivero and his followers were common criminals driven by no patriotic feeling, and Argentine historian Laurio H. Destéfani wrote in his 1982 book on the history of the Falkland Islands dispute:

This is the true story of what happened proof of which is stated in 42 documents published by the National Academy of History. Attempts have been made to create a legend about courageous gauchos who attacked and defeated the British, but this is just imagination. Aye 271 Rosarinho,
So you also want to give LAN Chile the extra buisness?

It aint even mutch of a detour to just fly round cape horn (as opposed to flying over the Magellan straight)

If Argentina prohibits flights from Punta Arenas from using their airspace, - Its no real problem. Plus the fact there are flights from th UK direct in to Mountpleasent airport on the Falkland Islands. (malvinas?)

Its actually hilarious that even the Junta withdrew the name Puerto Rivero in 1982 when they discovered he was amurdering thug. Besides which I doubt Rivero saw Stanley unless his gauchos rode that far from Port Louis.

Still, history not the Argentine's strong point according to the crap they tell the guillible UN.

Do the Argentines have any important historical figures that aren't actually murderers?
