P&O cruise vessels choose Falklands over Ushuaia, Puerto Madryn and Buenos Aires
P&O, a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation Plc and one of the world’s leading cruise operators will be omitting Puerto Madryn, Ushuaia and Buenos Aires from its 2013 season because of the difficulties encountered by its red ensign vessels in Argentine ports during recent months. They are paying to have a break from work, rest, have fun, and visit some interesting destinations. They do not want to get caught up in disputes, or be threatened, or have to endure gangs of state sponsored thugs joining them onboard. And the cruise lines have to consider the safety of their passengers.
This could escalate if the Argentine government does not put a stop to this nonsense. Word spreads quickly in tourism. Cruise lines are not stopping in Argentina because it is too dangerous? They could lose their hard-fought slice of South American tourism, the associated jobs and the dollars CFKC loves so much.
Thinking this through and using their logic, you can now expect them to take legal action against P&O, watch this space!

It is a selfish perspective considering the efforts Argentina has made to build a tourism industry. They have worked hard at making the country a holiday destination with diverse attractions and it generates a lot jobs and hard currency for the country. This may only be one cruise line to start with but the tourism industry is inclined to follow suit if it thinks customers are at risk.

I think the IMF are taking pity on the people of Argentina by not upsetting the apple cart over the holiday period.
Unfortunately, Argentina won't be having a Happy New Year, as the IMF will give them the boot. That means NO ONE will lend them any money, and no company will risk investing in Argentina. Cristina's 'buddy' is on his last legs, and there is no guarantee that his successor will keep throwing Venezulan money at the hopeless case that Argentina has become.

There are great English speaking Policia Touristica specially trained in assisting foreign tourists in all the main areas: MVD, Punta del Este and Piriapolis. Their use has cut casual crime down enormously. They are easily recognised, they have little white cars with Policia Tourista very prominently displayed on both sides of the vehicle and to encourage tourists to consult them they park up in shopping areas and hand out leaflets about the area.
Great big cruise ship in Punta bay yesterday with all the tenders ferrying passengers to the harbour. At least two (Americans) made straight for McDonalds at Punta Shopping and sat near to us. They just love Uruguay having been here twice previously.
I didn’t want to upset their holiday by asking if they had ever been to BsAs or Argentina in general. ;o)
More good news for the Argentine economy and the CFK Comedy Club that is running Argentina. Typical Banana Republic incompetence of a failing state.

Just last month I was there (reluctantly) for a few hours did a bit of shopping in Florida St and having just walked across (on the green pedestrian light) the wide main road at the top end (cant think of its name now) a maniacal-looking thug jumped on my back, grabbed my arm, wrestled my watch off, jumped back onto the pillion of a motorbike and off they went. This was in the middle of the day, on the equivalent of Oxford St, with thousands of people around - not one of whom appeared to notice. This is the 3rd time I have been robbed in BA, it really is a bad place, and this from someone who has spent many years in South Africa (mostly Cape Town) where nothing like this has ever happened to me. Like most people I didn't report the incident because I would have just wasted hours and most of the Arg police are crooks too - any Argie will agree with this. If the true (unpublicised, undocumented) crime stats were known, most responsible govts would be gving warning advisories. BA is a filthy and awful city, run by a corrupt govt - why would anyone, never mind Falklanders, want to be part of such a grubby country? Why cant the brain-dead morons screaming “Malvinas son Argentinas” understand that ???

If that were to happen then Argentina would soon abandon this daft policy and guarantee everybodys safety so that the world and the cruise lines can return to normal sanity. You don't have any leverage that is substantial enough to change our behavior. Not just you, neither the USA, EU, Brazil, Mercosur, China do... as you can see by our repeated escalations on all fronts, for years on end.
The rest of the world has had almost 15 years now to teach us a lesson (since 2000), and we are still waiting for the magic bullet to humiliate us to submission, allow you to destroy our economy by flooding your products in, have the government give up the Malvinismo, and make us pay our debts, and do as you say in anything else you fancy.
Nobody can influence irrational behaviour, I doubt anybody would want to try. You just keep hammering those nails into your own coffin chief. Nobody else is losing out. In fact, for the rest of us it is an opportunity too good to miss.

The main point being... the world severely undersestimates our capacity for long-term rancor. Most societies may forgive and forget within years... we take centuries. So the IMF, the WTO all that stuff you are doing to us... the world can forget about Argentina being a responsible, helpfu country for at least till 2070-2080 if not beyond. Because all alive today in Argentina will never move on.
Look at how we still don't forgive, or adore, Peron, depending on your view. Look how we still fret over things that ocurred in 1900.
That's proof enough, that the world has made us a VERY long-term problem. Perhaps, if they had traded with us fairly (not tried to destroy our economy), if they had done other things respectfuly, it would have been different.

You must find a way to do it. Via Chile is probably your best option, especially if you want to spend 2 weeks. You can only do 1 if you go via Argentina. It sure is a beautiful BOT and, even though I am biased, I have been to pretty well all of them so I can compare. St Helena has eluded me but I am about to go. Everyone who has been, and all of my many St Helenian friends assure me it is beautiful. Montserrat is one of my favourite Caribbean BOTs even though it doesn't have the beautiful beaches like a lot of other people like.
If you go to the Falklands make it for two weeks and book a decent itinerary before you go. Don't just turn up in Stanley and try it figure it out; you won't get to see the best places. Stanley Services or International Tours and Travel (both locally based) are the best agencies to book through. Just ask me if you ever get the chance and I can give you all the details.
It is just a sad indictment of everything that is wrong with the cronyism and shortsighted of Argentina, its government and people. Such a loss not to be able to visit BsAs but it is not worth the hassle, danger and petty bureaucracy that entering and leaving Argentina has become. Again, Chile and Uruguay will reap the benefits. Montevideo has a great future and is in many ways easier and more congenial for tourist day trippers and Chile is already attracting Chinese, Australian and other companies from functional economies as their South American bases. Personally, I used to get to BsAs at least once a year for business and a holiday. Business is drying up; the dirt, oppression and disfunctional financial environment has taken the pleasure out of spending personal time there. Is it is as bad in the other Argentinian cities? So so sad.

All this bodes well for the deep sea port in the Falklands. I believe shipping, not just cruise liners, will be a very important part of the economy in the Islands in the future and that unless Argentina try growing up, they will lose a lot of trade in the south as the new port in the FI conjoins with Chile.

Does anybody on the Falklands (there are STILL no Malvinas you prats) have access to either the official LR software package or to a clone (of which there are a few now)? It is vital to use the updates on a regular basis because LR are always ironing out bugs mainly to the body computer.
Funny things happen quite often with the electrics and the canbus: these can be problamatical to cure to say the least. May I suggest you contact LR direct if you are unsure about access to the right equipment. They have been known to LOAN this stuff if they think it will increase sales.

I don't know about all that technical stuff you mentioned but the local Land Rover dealer is reasonably competent I think so hopefully no problems with anbuses (whatever they are. LOL). We've bought our last couple from them and they've always looked after us. Didn't actually go through them this time though so I hope that doesn't upset the apple cart. Argentina a very silly but also a very sadly comical story as it continues to self-distruct...a country that relies a lot on tourism dollars is doing its very best to destroy its reputation as a worthwhile and safe destination to visit. I have a workmate here in Sydney who is setting off to Buenos Aires and Iguacu, before heading off to Ushuaia to take a cruise to the Falklands and onto South Georgia and Antartica.....thanks to these silly muppets that support CFK and may well need to follow my advice and head off to Punta Arenas.....still, as an Aussie married to a Chilean, I can assure him like anyone else that Punta Arenas is destination worth visiting in its own right and offers the exciting prospect of not only sailing or flying off to Antartica, but heading up to Puerta Natales and the world class Torres del National Park, three hours up the road from Punta Arenas.

errr no-the ones off tourist ships have no problems with personal hygiene, and also they have lots of money to spend, which Argentina has very generously said they can spend in Uruguay Chile and the Falkland Islands instead of in Argentina.
I applaud this Argentine generosity as do the rest of South American and the South Atlantic.

If Argentina prohibits flights from Punta Arenas from using their airspace, - Its no real problem. Plus the fact there are flights from th UK direct in to Mountpleasent airport on the Falkland Islands. (malvinas?)
Its actually hilarious that even the Junta withdrew the name Puerto Rivero in 1982 when they discovered he was amurdering thug. Besides which I doubt Rivero saw Stanley unless his gauchos rode that far from Port Louis.
