The report “Global Food: Waste Not Want Not” by the UK’s Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) has found that 30-50%, or 1.2-2 billion tons, of produced food is wasted by poor storage, bad distribution and exacting quality standards in the developed world. Read full article

    Oh god, does this mean that we are going to start seeing full balls out gustation menus featuring nothing but offal as the new thing to be seen doing?!?!

    boost investment in small scale farming in poor countries, and
    slash the greenhouse gas emissions that are increasing the costs of feeding a warming world”.

    It could be argued that spoilage between the field and the table is more important than anything proposed in this article.

    ...and ironically the hipness of the locavore movement has turned local produce into a boutique item, making it cheaper in some areas to purchase food transported over distances where spoilage becomes a greater risk.
