Argentina claimed at the CELAC summit in Chile that the UK has converted the Falkland Islands into one of the “most militarized territories in the world” with the sole purpose of exploiting the natural resources of the Islands and control access to Antarctica. Read full article

    Oh here we go again.

What they mean is that despite the UK being there 1st, Argentina believes it is it's God given right to do the controlling and exploiting and sod everyone else.

There is no militarisation, and the more Argentina bleat on about it the more foolish they make themselves look.

The savage 'issuing' of fishing licenses is amusing, especially as Argentina publicly told the world that they were going to encourage over-fishing in the hopes of damaging the Falklands fishing industry, while the Falklands have held out the hand of friendship and cooperation, only to be ignored by the 'we only want peace' government, that says one thing and acts in a very aggressive and threatening manner.

And the reason that Argentina wants to resolve things by peaceful negotiation is lying on its side in Port Belgrano.

I don't understand why the UK needs soldiers to exploit the natural resources of the islands. Are their search and rescue pilots able to spot oil fields. Are their missile battery operators also trained in operating oil rigs? If I was a suspicious man I would think there was some other purpose to this military presence on the islands that Argentina objects to.

    2 RICO

The short answer is that we don't. If you were paying attention, you would know that the UK does not want to have a garrison on the falklands and the Islanders themselves do not want a military presence either but we HAVE to have a military presence on the islands because if we didn't, Argentina would be in there like swimwear.

Before you could say “We want to remain british” the Argentine government would have their own military presence on the Island and would have deported all the Islanders to Montevideo.

    So, to your comment about:-

“If I was a suspicious man I would think there was some other purpose to this military presence on the islands that Argentina objects to.”

I say there is no other purpose to this military presence on the islands that Argentina objects to. other than preventing the Argentines stealing them away from the Falkland Islanders.

Love the way CFK twists stats. There are roughly 1,000 men, 4 Eurofighters one frigate and possibly a submarine. Hardly the most militarised zone in the world. She's just annoyed that it's enough to see off anything she could throw at it.

There are probably more land mines per head of population than anywhere else on earth. Maybe she should be reminded of that stat.

So you state you are not a suspicious man, clearly you are not suspicious of your own country's intentions., which is to divert your attention away from the dismal job CFK is doing, flushing your country down the toilet. Britain is protecting its people, protecting is sovereignty, protecting its assets, protecting protecting protecting. Now just imagine that you owned the falklands but Chile was aiming the same (hypocritical) rhetoric at you, trying to break you economically, trying to remove your rights to govern your own land, even launching an invasion What would you do? You would protect it.

All those nations around the Antarctic with choice and freedom of access down the South Atlantic, including passing or calling at the Faklands... Several nations are involved in the oil extraction and exploration of the Falklands...Things have permanently chnaged since that war.
If CFK can explain how the UK could control the South Atlantic (with all the UK's other military committments and financial short-falls) we'll admit that we've been wrong to suppose that she is totally inept at diplomacy or economic wisdom.
An attack by the military from either side would involve international condemnation and China might even close its Bank...
It it does look as if CFK's psychotherapist isn't having much progress
    with the patient.
At the very least, CFK ought to change her advisors.

An Argentinian Government official says that if the British Military were not there, something(or someone) would take physical steps to attempt to stop Falkland Islanders developing any business sectors involving natual resources.

Read it again if you don't believe me: “We believe that the sole purpose of militarization is to guarantee the exploitation of natural resources and hydrocarbons” claimed Deputy Foreign minister Eduardo Zuain

...and that must mean attempting a physical intervention, as that's all a military force could counter.

And CELAC does not bat an eyelid. Disgusting.

    Uruguay. Evens

The issue here is that most south americans have no access to 'education' as we know it and simply believe whatever they're told through their telescreen. Typically this involves them shouting at pictures of emmanuel goldstein for two minutes. This is before returning to their mundane prescribed lives worshiping Nestor and his family, the pigs who demand that 'all pigs are equal, but some are more equal than others'. ArgSoc ruling their lives with an iron fist.

The only thing they're missing is Big Brother, but I guess that involves some kind of working infrastructure.

    A little ditty for Christina.

Oh where, oh where, can my HUGO be?
The Lord took HIM away from me.
HE's gone to heaven so I've got to be good,
So I can see my HUGO when I leave this world.

When I woke up, the rain was falling down,
There were people standing all around.
Something warm flowing through my eyes,
But somehow I found my HUGO that night.
    I lifted HIS head, HE looked at me and said;
“Hold me darling just a little while.”
I held HIM close I kissed HIM - our last kiss,
I found the love that I knew I had missed.
Well now HE's gone even though I hold HIM tight,
I lost my love, my life that night.

Well, by using my skills in complex mathematics (the addition of real and imaginary numbers) we can clearly see that Britain must be militarizing the South Atlantic.
After all, if the UK has sent a commisioned ship twice per year for the last thirty years then there ought to be sixty commissioned ships (not including HMS Clyde, that is based there).
The Royal Navy currently has active: 4 assault ships, 13 frigates, 5 destroyers, 15 mine countermeasure vessels and 23 patrol vessels (again excluding HMS Clyde), which neatly adds up to 60 commissioned ships.

By the logic of ArgentinaMaths, the UK is currently being defended by HMS Echo, HMS Enterprise, HMS Scott, HMSML Gleaner, HMS Bristol and HMS Victory.

If they want a latin america free of colonialism, I suggest they all go back to where they came from and leave the continent to those few remaining indigenous people that were there before the Spaniards, Portuguese etc.

Why do latams go on about colonialism when their nations are all products of european colonialism, and those indigenous people that weren't wiped off the map are at the very least very repressed.

I didn't realise that the British forces based on the Falkland Islands are so technologically advanced. In order to “control access”, surely a ship or aircraft should be able to reach an “intruder” in about half-an-hour. It's 3,875 miles from Stanley to Cape Town. At altitude, a Typhoon can manage 1,320 mph. That's Stanley to Cape Town in 3 hours. But it would need 2 refueling tankers because its range is 1,800 miles. But just to get where needed in half-an-hour, they must have a higher speed. So those Typhoons must be able fly at close on 8,000 mph. And the ships must be fantastic. Just imagine a 4,900 tonne frigate at 8,000 mph!

A country is not determined by the number of people living there. We have our own flag, culture and national identity. That makes us a country. Besides, with oil/gas production the population will swell significantly.

You can laugh all you want but the truth of the matter is that Argentina 'wants to control the South Atlantic access and resources' but finds a very determined population standing in its way backed up by a well stocked military. I for one, rather enjoy watching the Jets scream across the harbour when they are doing their practise runs. They make the most wonderful noise when they put the afterburners on. @39 Spelling not getting any better then? Even with an example in front of you? Yes, Falkland Islands is a country. Please note:
“A country is a region legally identified as a distinct entity in political geography. A country may be an independent sovereign state or one that is occupied by another state, as a non-sovereign or formerly sovereign political division, or a geographic region associated with sets of previously independent or differently associated peoples with distinct political characteristics.”
The Falkland Islands is a distinct entity in political geography. It is an independent non-sovereign state. It has distinct political characteristics. And, unlike a certain nearby state, its people don't walk over the blood and bones of the original indigenous people that they murdered every day. How DO you feel about walking over all that blood and bones? The evidence of the murders of your predecessors. And not too long ago. Just 1884. That's only 128 years ago. What was your great grandfather doing 128 years ago? Are you a born-again killer? Got any “family” history? Or has it been “re-written”? Or “lost”?

The Falkland Islands maintains a defensive shield just sufficient to discourage Argentina from attacking the islands.

Should there be a need to guarantee against attack the exploitation of natural resources and hydrocarbons, this might need more deployment.

There seems to be no need at present as there are no significant pointy weapons aimed at the platforms.
If they were damaged by 'enemy forces', then there would be a need to deploy for attack as well as defence. To take the war TO the 'enemy' needs the use of special weapons. It must be fervently hoped that this never becomes necessary.

does the UN have Doctors present? I have come to the conclusion that Argentina (the country in total) is suffering a condition called Bipolar.....
At the lower levels of mania, such as hypomania, individuals may appear energetic and excitable. At a higher level, individuals may behave erratically and impulsively, often making poor decisions due to unrealistic ideas about the future, and may have great difficulty with sleep. At the highest level, individuals can show psychotic behavior, including violence. Individuals who experience manic episodes also commonly experience depressive episodes, or symptoms, or a mixed state in which features of both mania and depression are present at the same time. These events are usually separated by periods of “normal” mood; but, in some individuals, depression and mania may rapidly alternate, which is known as rapid cycling. Severe manic episodes can sometimes lead to such psychotic symptoms as delusions and hallucinations. So there you have it in a NUTshell, sorry for the pun. :)

“To take the war TO the 'enemy' needs the use of special weapons. It must be fervently hoped that this never becomes necessary.”

Special weapons fall into many categories and dependent upon the adversary and the force needed to subdue it, will determine the weapon needed.

In the case of AR, to subdue the whole country and prevent them from getting back into a belligerent state for 50 or more years could be accomplished by the use of non-nuclear tipped rockets and cruise missiles.

Destroying their electricity grid and alternators, the transport nodes for trains and vehicular traffic including buses and a substantial part of the docking facility (except foodstuffs) would be a good start. Not that many people would be killed but millions would be reduced to a medieval existence.

I firmly believe that only when the people who voted these thugs into government get to pay their dues will they really begin to think what has brought this about.

After all, why not? TMBOA seems determined to subject the peaceful people of the Falklands (there are STILL no Malvinas you prats) to much the same or even total extermination. Instead of wasting the UK military budget on useless forays into Asia why not spend it supporting our own people?

No doubt some will think this very harsh but it is better than the alternative.

Gonna have chicken wings for lunch, haven't eaten those in YEARS (not big into chicken much less deep fried in my country, but there's this American food festival coming up during the Vendimia with American chefs, I'm sure they'll have wings along side the typical tex-mex and dixie + clam chowser offer).

Not my fault your situation has gotten so comical that you don't have enough CHICKENS (the frieking easiest animal to raise, even a bum in a house full of cockroaches can raise them!), for your biggest sporting event. How fucking embarrasing. Would be like not enough wine for vendimia or leña for Boca-River.

Not my fault that such things now happen in your country. Tell me has milk hit 8 dollars yet? How many kids are now sipping on grass brew for breakfast? At least they should thank the fact they didn't get shot.

BTW If we run out of chicken in-country we can buy whatever we need silly boy. We don't have a problem importing anything we want. Of course we still don't want tainted RG beef or poisonous RG lemons.

BTW I saw plenty of bags of them at Costco yesterday. It is nice to go to stores where the shelves are full from products all over the world.

Argentina needs to face reality - with the exceptions of Venezuela, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Ecuador and Cuba no other Latin American country really has much time for the arrogance of Argentina.

México and Colombia are two countries which are superior to Argentina economically and culturally - and they don't “blow their own trumpets” as Argentina does. As somebody once said to me “Argentina is the country of the future; sadly it always will be”!

    As I said, media hype:
The sky is not falling. There is not an impending chicken wing shortage, the National Chicken Council said, and most wing-eating football fans will not have to worry about having enough for Super Bowl Sunday.

“The good news for consumers is that restaurants plan well in advance to ensure they have plenty of wings for the big game,” Bill Roenigk, chief economist and market analyst at the Washington-based chicken group, said in the 2013 “Wing Report” released by the chicken council this week.

Which school do you go to?

You must be an adolescent judging by the drivel you put in your posts.

Even if the Falklands (there are STILL no Malvinas you twat) were the most militarised have you stopped to ask yourself why?

Could it do with the fact that you arseholes invaded the islands in 1982 and the four typhoons and 1,000 regular troops plus a T45 and perhaps an astute sub which WILL be more than enough to kill the threat still bubbling below the surface.

It is not as if Putridjelli has not admitted as such only last year to the press.

So grow up and realise that your shithole of a country will never be in a position to invade the islands again. Didums: this is what we say to crying children to salve their nightmares and you had better believe that the UK military are definitely your worst nightmare if ever they are unleashed against your mainland.

Yet from 2002 to 2009 a growing shortage of early education facilities prevented thousands of children from beginning their education. Every year, as the demand for spaces grew, no new early education facilities were added, while existing schools struggled with their overcrowded classrooms. Between 20”

NATO is not involved in the Falklands - the islands are defended by the UK. So, we are back to a few aircraft and one frigate on rotation with a garrison of British troops with NO capability of landing troops on S.A soil.

In 2003 there were MORE trooops in the Islands than there are in 2013.

In 1993 there were MORE troops in the Islands thatn there were in 2003.

In 195-86 there were a LOT MORE Troops, ships and aircraft - then there were in 1993.

Please answer this - How is it that in 2013 the Islands are so “militarized”?

Good news! The nice elderly Argentine couple who've been renting my Punta del Este flat every February for years have arrived! They've paid the rent with a large supermarket order, as they weren't able to buy dollars in Argentina except on the black market. They paid the supermarket bill with their credit card - for some reason this they are able to do. Funnily enough, the supermarket involved is called TIENDA INGLESA. I couldn't find one called Tienda Falklands, which would have been right and proper.

    @ChrisR

Put some kebabs and curry stuff there and you will see how effective would be to catch British soldiers.

Argentina must be unbelievably weak militarily if it considers that 4 fighter aircrafty, one frigate, one patrol boat and about a thousand troops equals “the most territory on earth”. Either that, or their education system must be seriously lacking as they clearly have never heard of the border between the two Koreas or that between Israel and Syria.

    @137 DJ56,
    They are cry-babies & primadonnas.
Like the little kid who makes sure the adults are watching his tussles with other kids, then bursts into tears.
    There, there, diddums.
