Very little Argentines say on this subject have anything to do with reality. Here's to the next 100 years of British rule :-)

    Well said Mr Summers.

It's about time the Argentine government stopped dreaming and started facing reality: the reality that they created in Argentina; economic madness, censure of the free press, hounding people who don't agree with them, and creating their own version of the Hitler Youth.

Come on Mr Timerman, show you have a pair and deal with the problems within your own country.

Just watched Jan Cheek on the Breakfast News. calm, thoughtful, Stateswoman-like performance all round. Contrasts to the ineptitude and rudeness of the Argentine Foreign Minister's performance yesterday.

He avoided the press when he left after yesterdays meeting - what a coward.

I fully sympathize with Summers et al's need to remain above it all, rising above everything while the La Campora and Malvanistas and CFK's administration seem to be fond of the sound of the bottom of the barrel being scraped. You can hear him in this slipping in a little irony.... I can see it now, “you keep talking about history, sir.... it really doesn't line up with the one we've lived in for the past couple centuries. We seem to remember something happening in 1982 that you don't seem to want to discuss that pretty much controls much of the dynamics...” On the other hand, I keep remembering the Scientology expose where the creepy little twit who kept barging in on them doing their story finally got the journalist to loose it on camera. Keep your head, Mikey, and save it for the 5-o'clock scotch.

Falkland Islands: MP 'offended' by Argentine foreign minister's 'West Bank' remark - MP Alun Cairns, a member of the All Party Group on Argentina, said he was offended by some the comments made by Argentine foreign minister Hector Timerman during their meeting to discuss the Falklands on Tuesday.
Mr Cairns, Conservative MP for the Vale of Glamorgan, said he was “offended” by comments from the Argentine foreign minister at the House of Commons meeting to discuss the Falkland Islands.
“Effectively, he dismissed the right of self-determination to the Falkland Islanders on the obscure reason that it's a territory rather than a country or a nation,” he said.
The Tory MP and Welsh Assembly member also said he took offence at Mr Timmerman's comments comparing the Islanders with the Palestinians in the West Bank.
While the Islands are internally self-governing, the UK continues to have sovereignty and Westminster remains responsible for matters including defence and foreign affairs.
Argentina meanwhile claims that the islands are theirs, and have requested that the government enter into negotiations over their sovereignty....'

'Argentina must respect the rights of Falkland Islanders
The Argentinian foreign minister can't look Falkland Islanders in the eye and deny our rights – that's why he's afraid to meet us.
Once again we find ourselves expressing disappointment at the actions of the Argentinian government. Sadly this is an increasingly common occurrence. Cristina Kirchner's administration continues its policy of bullying and intimidation against us, while denying our right to live in the islands that have been our home for nearly 200 years. This policy was in evidence again today, with Argentinian foreign minister Héctor Timerman suggesting in an interview with the Guardian that the islands will be under Argentinian control within 20 years. Statements like that fly in the face of our often-expressed desire for normal neighbourly relations. Co-operation in areas of mutual benefit is once again ignored.
It is ironic that the Argentinian government maintains that all it wants is dialogue over the Falkland Islands, yet when offered such opportunities for dialogue, with the people whose voice matters most, it refuses to engage. We deeply regret that Héctor Timerman has declined the opportunity to meet William Hague and our own democratically elected officials this week. This is not the first time our attempts at direct communication with the Argentinian government have been ignored. Last year at the United Nations in New York, President Fernández de Kirchner was offered a letter asking her to meet with us to hear our views, and to discuss matters of common interest. Regrettably, she refused to accept it. The letter was subsequently delivered to the Argentinian government, but we have never received a response....'

Well put Mike Summers. Timan is on the back foot. He will not meet anyone not of his choosing, the islanders, the general press, i.e. a proper press conference or anyone that can easily give him a hard time and blow his insane claims and arguments out of the water. He harps on and on about sticking to UN wishes in dealing with the subject, but, blatantly refuses to speak with the people it concerns most of all. He is making threats that were it another Foreign Minister, say from Russia, would cause an International meltdown of relations that would put the world at risk of war, but, because he is such an idiot and making threats that could never happen, Britain simply and politely tells him that the door is open for talks with the correct people present. Absolute diplomatic gold, makes Argentina out to be pathetic.

Timermans whingefest is having about as much impact as a fly on a windscreen. It says it all when this odious little twerp gathers a bunch of David Icke lookalikes together in a great capital city and studiously avoids the critical press or any discussion with those his country have invaded and bullied.
Argentina is emerging again as a basket case nation. Shitting on its friends Spain and Italy by stealing, reneging on loans, cheating and indulging in odious hyperbole believed by no-one. The impounding of its flagship is just the start. It's close association with Chavez, Castro, and Iran makes it a pariah state. It will be North Korea next to get its hands on a nuke so it can posture some more, that will be next. Iran could provide something too.

Since you say you have studied law, you should be able to tell the difference between a local government, and the government of a self-governing overseas territory.

The UK has NO right to talk to Argentina about the Falklands UNLESS the Falkland Islands Government say that they can.

The UK can in NO way tranfer sovereignty of the Islands because they DO NOT belong to us, they belong to the Falkland Islanders.

The UK cannot benefit from the natural resources of the Falkland Islands, unless the Falkland Islands Government allow it.

Do you see the pattern here?

Argentina is trying to talk to the people who have NO say in what happens to the Falklands, the British Government.

The British are only involved to ensure that the rights of the Islanders are respected, and to make sure that Argentina doesn't illegally invade again.

Search the dictionary meaning of sovereignty. You do not hold .. That is why we treat this matter at that level, UK is the sovereign nation and we must address this issue. When Hong Kong was ceded to China, UK did not mind the view of citizens who wanted to continue to belong to the crown, but earned the government's decision of UK public opinion in the colony.

But you don't want to negotiate.

You claim that the islands were usurped in 1833. Patagonia was definately usurped after that. So before any discussion around the Falklands can take place, Argentina MUST cede Patagonia back to the indigenous and give full recompense including their stolen minerals.

If this isn't done FIRST everything else is massive hypocrisy.

After that is complete, we can both put our cases to the ICj to clarify whether the islands were usurped, and if they were, who from. I think 60 days of mutiny, rape and murder between decades of British sovereignty doesn't make a just cause for usurption.

So...first negotiation...give up Patagonia to the Ameriindians and fully recompense them for their losses. Then come back and we will put the FIs to the ICJ.

#38 Britain leased Hong Kong on a fixed term lease which ran out. Britain observed international law and handed the colony back to China as required by law. It's quite different. Britain has soveriegnty over the Falkland in law and despite that Britain is willingly allowing the inhabitants to have their say and cede to Argentina if they so wish.

But... Who in their right mind would want to be part of a country that is an aggressive bully that's also an economic and political basket case?

Prove that Argentina has sovereignty in the ICJ. If you won't, then you can't prove it, and you have no right to any say in the Falkland Islands.

Again trying to distract with Hong Kong, which is in NO way like the Falkland Islands.

The only people who have a say in the future of the Falklands are the Falkland Islanders themselves. Their right to choose is enshrined in article 1 of the UN Charter (which having studied law you will know that it applys to all people).

It's time for Argentina to get over yourselves, are start looking after your own country, which is falling down around your ears, instead of constantly looking at someone else's land with envy.

#41 #43 Actually that's not quite right. HK island and Kowloon peninsula were ceded in perpetuity. It was only the New Territories that were leased for 99 years. It was decided in the 80s that to only return the NTs wouldn't work and it was instead decided to give back the entire territory.

Of course this was against the wishes of some of the inhabitants. Myself and I'm sure many other people would have preferred that HK either be integrated into the UK or given independence but it would have been difficult.

Of course, this is not the same as the Falklands (though I guess it does set the precedent of not respecting the wishes of the inhabitants).

Anyway, Argentina will NEVER get the Falklands. Mostly because there is very little reason the Falklanders should ever want to ruled by Argentina but also because if Argentina tried to take them the UK would let her.

There is nothing wrong or shameful about being poor, there is definately something wrong and shameful about being kept that way. Whether it is deliberate or just through piss poor performance by succesive governments who rule you.

Numerous people on here have said how rich Argentinia was in the early 20c and what potential it has to be that way again. The fact that is not that way, is not the fault of anyone else, to pretend that it is and to foster that pretence is self defeating and dishonest.

Stop drawing comparisons with other nations imperial past, you traded with the those imperialists, not just the British ones at that and you generated your wealth from their. What did you think they used to pay you for your beef, minerals and wheat? where did you think they got the money from?

It's all well and good displaying an anti imperialistic attitude now, now that it suits your political ends, but you certainly did not display it then.

Your own maps in the late 19th century show the Falklands in a different colour. Your own borders have shifted repeatedly over the years so what integrity are you attempting to recover? Czechoslovakia separated, Slovenia ceded from Yugoslavia with barely a skirmish. Kosovan independence is now recognised. The Republic of Ireland dropped its territorial claim to N.Ireland after the Good Friday Agreement and today NI exists by Self-Determination as in integral part of the UK. If NI one day votes for a United Ireland then the UK cannot and will not stop that. The same applies to the Falklands. It's the islanders your Foreign Minister should be speaking to, not the Brits because the islands aren't ours to give away. You seem to have us confused with an Empire that died with Queen Victoria. It no longer exists except in your head. Why you should be choosing to emulate our colonial period is quite beyond me.

Patagonia was inherited from the Spanish crown.....don't think so Xav...it was stolen by genocide in a REAL act of 19th century colonialism. Like I say, return it to the indigenous population with full recompense for their losses, BEFORE the first word can be spoken about the Falklands.

    Just as a tip:

Even after you've given back land that YOU stole in a YOUR genocidal COLONIALISM, it doesn't mean that the islands will become Argentine, as they have only been Argentine for 130 days in history, once in 1832 for a couple of months and again in 1982...both short windows punctuated with murder and agression.

The British have held sovereignty of the islands for hundreds of years either side of your 130 days...

But before we continue our discussion...give Patagonia back to the indigenous with full recompense.

    1) Recover territorial integrity.

It is impossible to “recover” something that you never had in the first place - so this is totally bogus

    2) End the occupation of the country by a colonial empire

Argentina is the colonial conqueror of Patagonia, pushing out & killing its inhabitants and stealing their lands. The Falklands were uninhabited, claimed by the UK before Argentina existed and are a legally legitimate people in their own lands.

    3) Discard the islands delas use as a base for a nuclear power.

This is just totally bullshit...and alughably so.

    4) Complete mastery of the Argentine continental shelf.

aka Colonial land-grab of an area you have never owned nor have rights to. read that again? Colonialism.

    5) And other issues ..

yeah yeah, you cant think of any more but will add the moon and Mars if you can think of a way to do so.

Please negotiate. You have claimed you are against 19th century colonialism... (although conveniently for any colonialism pre 19thC).

So, to prove you are against it, please return Argentinas borders to that of 1832. Please return Patagonia to the true indigenous population, and repay them (say $40bn USD for the stolen minerals and resources).

Once this is done, we can BEGIN a discussion on the islands. I fear the discussion might not go your way either, as colonising an uninhabited island is not really colonialism. Also, whilst we are on the subject there is the small matter of 1982 to discuss....but again, I am getting ahead of myself...if 19th Century colonialism is so abhorrent, please immediately return Patagonia.

    Consider the negotiations started.

@31 All argies are COWARDS. It's because they are like bacteria. But not so advanced!
@34 NONE of your “proposals” are acceptable. Not a single one. So there's nothing to “negotiate” is there?
@38 Hong Kong wasn't “ceded” to China. It was returned. Because it was leased. Amazing that, isn't it? It's because Britain keeps things called “records” and it doesn't change them. Unlike argieland. So we “knew” that Hong Kong was leased. Like we “know” that the Falkland Islands are British!
@45 The Falklands aren't “integral” to argie territory. The clue is in the word “islands”. The Islands are inhabited by the Falklanders, who happen to be British. They are not “occupied”. “Occupation” is what you lot did in '82. British forces are on the Islands at the request of the legal government. Nothing to do with you losers. Complete mastery? Told Chile that one, have you? You can't “inherit” sovereignty. There is no such legal principle and there never has been.

It is interesting that in Timerman's press conference he said that 'Argentina wants to improve the lives of the Islanders'. (Ha,Ha) And the overwhelming response from Argentines is to ridicule Timerman. They know their country is a mess, with rampant crime, corruption, poverty and raging inflation. Even Argentines coveting the islands can see the Islander's life is so much better than theirs.

The Argentine government should note that this has not gone down well with their public who are asking why they are not spending time improving their lives.

In a recent letter to the Daily Telegraph the buffoon trolly dolly, who passes for the Argentine Ambassador in London, alleged that as the Falklands/Malvinas archipelago is an enclave of Argentina then sovereignty should “revert” to Argentina.

An “enclave” in both Spanish and English means the same thing - it must be totally surrounded by another country. The archipelago is not an enclave because it is totally surrounded by international waters. The maritime limits of Argentina do not reach anywhere near the islands.

I believe that the West is morally superior to the East, we can say that we have recovered thanks to the rebirth line of progress, without it we would still be in the middle ages. I've always said, the West is 1000 years overdue, the average age was a waste of time for the progress of our civilization. We must not let this happen again.
The point is that Muslims in their fanaticism and intolerance are advancing on our tolerant culture, I propose that reciprocity conditions exist for them. Only allow the construction of mosques, if the same thing happens in the country with churches. Know that in Saudi Arabia are prohibited from building churches? Know that in Egypt last week was sentenced a woman and her family for converting to Christianity? If Muslims take over West'll not condemn darkness fanatic Christianity when the Roman Empire fell.

'Falklands: Foreign Minister's Parting Shot - Hector Timerman continues his war of words with Britain over the future of the Falkland Islands.
Argentina's foreign minister concluded his three-day visit to the UK with another broadside against British colonial history and a promise to continue legal action against companies drilling for oil around the Falkland Islands.
At a packed news conference in the Argentinian Ambassador's residence in Belgrave Square, Hector Timerman repeated a claim he made on Tuesday that the islands, which Argentina calls the Malvinas, will be under Argentinian control within 20 years.
Sky News asked Mr Timerman why he used language about colonialism when his own country is populated by the descendants of colonialists who many historians say wiped out the indigenous people.
The Minister, who is said to have a short fuse, replied calmly but did not mince his words, saying: “It is quite audacious language to compare Argentina with the UK as a colonial country. Argentina is not a colonialist country. It has fought colonialism on several occasions.
”Of course, the way our indigenous peoples were treated in Argentina is not something that the Argentine government is proud of.... Argentina's colonial history has nothing to do with the division of the Argentine territory by the greatest colonial empire from the 19th century, the British Empire.
“Thank God it has been defeated worldwide and today it is no longer recognised as such.”
Questioned about his assertion that the islands would be under Argentinian rule within 20 years, he said: “I am convinced if the UK accepts UN resolutions then the islands will be controlled by us in less than 20 years.”

Indeed, we Falkland Islanders settled in our home long before many parts of Argentina were settled by the Argentines.

Mr Timerman knows full well that it is simply untrue to say that we have fewer political rights than anyone else, or that the United Nations has said that self-determination does not apply to the Falklands, or that UN resolutions preclude Argentina from sitting down with us. On Wednesday morning Minister Timerman will make the opening speech at the meeting in the Argentine embassy of the 18 European groups Pro-dialogue in the Malvinas question that includes politicians, academics, writers and journalists from 18 different EU countries.

Following Timerman’s speech, historian Federico Lorenz will address the forum, and after him UK writer and historian Richard Gott. A first draft of the Declaration calling for dialogue will be presented and in the afternoon International Law Professor Marcelo Kohen retakes the round of speeches followed by petitioner Alejandro Betts. Finally Mr Gott will head a panel on “Media actions to promote dialogue”.

Thursday takes off with Professor Alexis Litvine and a discussion panel on ‘Academic activities to promote dialogue”. Ambassador Castro closes the event with a brief note and the distribution of Malvinas related literature among participants.

Interesting piece on Sky news earlier. Commentator was saying how yesterday in the house of commons he was seen as being bad tempered and rude. Overnight at the embassy he was advised to calm down and that came across in the press conference, where he am ended his 20 year comment.

Also mentioned that he again brought up the legal action against the oil companies. Commentator said that it would probably succeed, I am assuming that he meant in the Argentine courts, because the commentator said it would make no difference and the oil was still on schedule to come ashore in 2017.

Basically he can say what he likes, makes no difference in the end. Mans a toothless tiger!

They calles for dialogue. Someone tell me I am not imagining all this, but wasn't that offered at the beginning of this farce and rejected by the Minister.

Do they mean limited dialogue, which neglects the Fundamental Human Rights (here we go again) of the people who actually live on the Islands?

Do they mean that the Islanders have no say in their own future and are irrelevent to the issues?

Sound like it to me, sounds like that is exactly what they mean.

Who are these people? I think it is important we know, because some time in the future, they may be asked to justify such blatantly dishonest comments.

It's necesary to signalize that timerman also said in a small interview that he gave for chanel 7 (our public television), where he expressed that if the u. k starts to respect u. n's resolutions, the islands will be under argentine sovereignty within 20 years, which is not exactly the same than what he had said in another interview.
On the other hand, summers forgat saying that he can also go to bed, and dream that the referendum will be the final answer for what the govt. from the islands calls, argentina's territorial ambitions, summers should recognize that the reality is much more complicated than his mediocre analysis. In fact, i recommend you to search in this website, what was expressed by the president from the decolonization committe, respecting the referendum, the date is june 16th 2012, i recognize that i was wrong when i typed the date of that article in others comments. Anyway i know that many of you prefer invaliding what he said, because it doesen't concid with your opinions, however, you should understand that like it or not, the case is presented every year before the committe, and if your u. k. can reject it's resolutions, is just because it has right to veto.
It seems that it's still necesary to remind summers, and many others hipocrite people who love emphasizing the wishes of the islanders, as the only one aspect that must be taken into account in order to find a solution for this conflict, that the u. n has always considered this case like a special colonial situation, beside, if any of us gets into the website of the u. n., we won't find any resolution which says: application of the right to self determination for the people from the malvinas-falkand islands, like there are for others populations who live in territories considered like non-self governing territories, in fact, none resolution has never included the govt. from the islands as athird part, that's something that we all now it, including summers.

Can you please point me to the relevant international laws or norms that show sovereignty is limited by population.

The Vatican is recognised by 178 of 193 UN members, is a UN Observer and has a population numbering less than 800. Interestingly the population is almost 100% immigrants.

Even more interestingly is that Argentina recognises Vatican City as a sovereign state with relations dating back to 1840.

It would seem that a minimum population size is not a prerequisite for sovereignty or recognition even by Argentina.

Recognition of states is not regulated by international laws but by the laws within those states recognising each other.

@132 axel. The remit of the C24 is report the implementation UN GA resolution 1514 & UN Charter Article 73 by the UK in the Falkland Islands to end British colonial rule of the population of the Non-Self-Governing Territory of the Falkland Islands

The C24 chairman's political opinion is irrelevant in his capacity as chair of the C24 because it falls outside the committee's terms of reference laid out in resolution 1654; also given the chair & several members of the C24 are politically allies of Argentina then such comments are biased & without independent objectivity

According to the lawfully binding UN Treaty Charter Chapter XV, the decolonization of the Falkland Islands is a bilateral matter between the UK & the Falkland Islanders; Argentina is a third party to the ending of alien British colonial government by the British metropole over the population of the Falkland Islands & its replacement by local democratic legislature & assemblies

The facts are that Argentina's claims about sovereignty or the decolonization process of the Falkland Islanders has never been upheld by the UN International Court of Justice since its inception 67 year ago & is the only competent international court able to provide a legal ruling & any such claims post October 1945 are subject to prescription & not retroactive before 1945

Remember,in March 1982 it was Argentina that terminated the peaceful negotiations began under resolution 2065 in favor of the use of force to subjugate the Falkland Islanders

N.B. The UN decolonization process is about the people being freed from colonial rule, not the land being taken from the colonized people as Argentine claims

It is quite wrong to suggest the UN does not apply the right of self-determination to the decolonization of the Falkland Islanders, resolution 2065 itself say 3 things must be borne in mind:

    1. the provisions & objectives of the UN Charter
    2. resolution 1514
    &
    3. the interests of the population

    which 1&2 make paramount

    DOMINGO.
As i said before, you and many others can invalid as much as as you like the words of the president from the decolonization committee, that just shows your lack of intellectual honesty.
However, if you mention objetivity, and if you had unless one line of intellectual honesty, which is necesary to discuss about something so complicated like politic issues are, you would realise that what was expressed by the president from the decolonization committee, is not different in absolut to what has alwasy been manifested by the u. n. respecting this cause.
If the only one aspect that matters to solve this dispute, is the right to self determination, then why has this cause always been considered like a special colonial situation?, why there is not any resolution in the website from the u. n. which invokes that principle for the population from the islands, like there are for others colonial situations?, why has the u. n. always called arg. and the u. k., to resume the negotiations, and has never included the govt. from the islands in those resolutions?.
I don't deny that perhaps that principle could be applicable for them, but we can't deny that it's very arguable.
Beside, in the same way that resolution 1514 includes the right to self determination, it's paragraphes 6th and 7th refer to territorial integrity, which is one the bases of our claim.
Anyway, i want to tell you that my analysis is not based on a personal opinion, it's based on the academic knowledge of professors of public international right.
On the other hand, i understand that for many of you, the invasion of 1982 ordered by the criminal junta that roled arg. in that moment, is your best excuse to reject the negotiations, however, you should realise that since 1983 arg. is a democracy, beside, if both nations are called by the u. n. to resume the negotiations, it should be respected by both parts of the conflict. Accept it or not, the u. k. is not the owner of the international right.

Respecting the way that this case has always been considered by the decolonization committe, i have recommended in most my comments to search in the news archive of this website, what was expressed by norma edwards before the decolonization committe, where she complained about the fact that this cause has always been considered like a special colonial situation, and about the lack of application of self determination for the population from the islands, the date is june 24th 2010.
On the other hand, when you search in the website of the u. n., you'll se also that there is not any resolution that includes the govt. from the islands as a third part in the conflict. I mean, you're uti argue logically and with fact but then you realise that the other person doesn't..... or can't...... or their supervisor forbids it.

Take Hepatia as a prime example:

She claims that the Islands won't become independent because they only have a “population of about 3000. Assume a doubling of the population by 2033 that becomes 6000.”

When pressed on why this isn't possible, this is the result:

“If Las Malvinas were to become independent of the UK Argentina would be forced to take it over to stop it becoming a failed state. The current squatters resident in Las Malvinas know this and will not attempt any move that would give them anything remotely resembling independence. Instead they will follow form and assert their Britishness. So, you are stuck with them right up to the time when the UK will hand Las Malvinas back to Argentina along with the payment of reparations.”

Take the over with what? Argentina has no military to speak off, the government is too scared of them. It's physically impossible.

    And reparations for what?

It woud seem Timerman isn't the only one that dreams of owning the islands.

But there is such a big logic gap in their arguments that it's no wider they argue in circles.

I can't wait to see the ARA Libertad, canons a'blazing, bringing the Islanders to heel during their independence celebrations.

The reparations paid by the UK to Argentina will be to compensate Argentina for the occupation of its sovereign territory. The UK has paid such reparations to America in the past so the precedent is well established.

How about good old fashioned force.!
    Question to you.

Argentina would assert sovereignty in Las Malvinas by sending two policemen and including the territory in elections.

“ In the very unlikely event that Las Malvinas were to become independent it would be necessary for Argentina to reassert its sovereignty. And who would stop it?”

Sounds like you are making a blatant statement that an Independent Falklands State would not have its sovereignty respected, just as BOT Falklands, ratified by a Referendum, would not be respected as sovereign.

Despite full UN recognition in both cases, are you stating that Argentina would do as it pleases??

Are you a representative of CFK's government, or are we to believe that you represent the popular opinions of average Argentine citizens??

Cast your (mind?) back some 31 years oh deluded one.
If the combined Argentine armed forces failed miserably to reassert (synonym - steal by physical force and threats ) their non-sovereignty you will send 3 policemen to do the same.
The local Falklands Brownie troop could deal with them in between baking cakes..

    @172 Clyde

I notice that El Thinko and Colonel Blink ( the short-sighted gink) are uncharacteristically quiet.

Do you 'think' they may be at Campora High Command putting together “Operation Sea-lion” to combat the coming Referendum??
