At least someone is actually visiting the islands, unlike all the other “informed” people who drone on and on about what the situation on the islands is like without having actually visited there or spoken to the people. Argentinean politicians, for example.

Argentina doesn't need a spy. You are welcome to send a delegation and openly observe democracy and self-determination in action.

@3 I am sure that Uruguay would jump at the chance to get into bed with the Falklanders and come under the protection of the British Crown.

I think it's good that the Uruguayans want to come to the Islands (to observe real democracy in action). They might learn a thing or two about due process, the legal and correct way to organise an election, the free and open lifestyle of the Islanders, the real opinions of real Falklanders about their history, present and future and about the views of the population towards the Argentine government.
It may actually surprise the delegates to see how pleasant the people are, how peaceful and self sufficient they are and how strongly they hold their views to left in peace.
It never urts to hear all these things from the 'horses mouth' rather than being spouted by CFK, Timerman, Puricelli and all the other RG cohorts.
You can just imagine the comments on the plane back to MVD- “Hey, it's not so bad in Stanley- Thise guys are really nice and they don't rig their elections......and we didn't realise that there is no militarisation, etc, etc”.

Clearly you've never been to Uruguay, you're just making very ignorant comments. I support the Falklanders, and I also support Uruguay, which is actually a pretty nice place, and pretty nice people/politicians.
The only reason Uruguay has any issues at all, or ever has, is because of its neighbors. Brazil pushed the military dictatorship on Uruguay. And Argentina is currently pushing its inflation and retarded foreign policies onto Uruguay. Uruguay never wanted any of it, and still doesn't, but it needs a trade partner large enough to replace Brazil and Argentina. If UK stepped up to that plate, to be that partner, that'd be AWESOME.

Plenty of people go to the islands from Uruguay, most recently an agricultural fact finding team whose lecture on the trip I went to last year.

    Totally positive.

I expect no less from anyone who goes to the islands with an open mind.

People need to remember that Uruguay was CREATED to be a buffer between Argentina and Brazil, by countries like the UK. Now if the UK doesn't use that buffer that they created, then that's just foolishness. UK was once a great trade partner with Uruguay, but they walked away from Uruguay after WW2, and I think that was a sad choice for everyone involved, and it has created some distrust in Uruguay of distant countries that can simply walk away at any time, unlike neighbors who can't walk away.

  • Shed-time

@12 By 'walked away' do you mean impoverished with huge war loans and a crumbling empire? It took us many years to reinvent ourselves as a post-colonising country and only recently came forward agreeing with the fact that we ignored our South American friends (Chile, Uruguay, Colombia, etc) for too long.

The issue here is about legacy, the Falklands are the size of wales and could potentially be driven (once they get out of their leather chair and hot fire mentality) into a modern economy. It's going to take time though, and surely the main benefactors will be Chile and Uruguay?

It's not like we abandoned anyone intentionally, we just needed to rebuild and rebrand... just like the nazis did in Argentina.

If we in the UK want to say something that the French or Germans won't like but that we sincerely believe then we just say it anyway. I would hate to have a neighbour so insecure that you have to constantly reassure them any time you want to express an opinion. ((That said, I am constantly embarassed that American Presidents are forced to say “Special Relationship” any time they come to the UK, i.e. it makes us look desperate rather than special)). Full marks to these 2 guys though for being brave enough to attend the referendum. Actions always speak louder than words.

@19Redpoll- Sorry if I did not make myself clear. My general thrust was to say that any doubters, sceptics or disbelievers should be encouraged and welcomed to visit the islands. I didn't mean to imply anything about the current Uruguayan government or officials but it is clear from the article that some opposition members (Jose Cardoso) who are pro Argentine and probably would benefit from seeing things for themselves rather than being fed the propaganda from BA.

Yes the pulp mill dispute is just part of Argentinas long chapter of efforts to strangle Uruguay. The situation got so bad that our left wing President Vasquez consulted George Bush about military assistance in the event of an Argentine invasion
Apart from that Argentine has a constant pressure on Uruguay to prevent RG tourists coming to this country
Montevideo airport was recently rebuilt and is now one of the best in SA. The idea was that it would serve as a hub but RA refused to allow flights from most of thier provincial cities to feed it
Also refusal to arrange joint dredging of the River Plate channels which are of benefit to Uruguayan shipping routes
And so on on and so on, but those examples will do for the moment

This is so pointless. In the worse case scenario and the ICJ declare Argentina has sovereignty the FIG will unilaterally declare independence and will be immediately recognised by the UK and I suspect much of the Commonwealth. Any attempt by Argentina to “assert” authority over the islands would be met with resistance. Face it, you lost.

@30 I whole heartedly agree, your post is indeed pointless.

As an example of a counter to one of your unfounded, ridiculous assertions, the Executive Authority in the Falkland Islands is vested in HM the Queen and the Governor exercises it on her behalf. If anyone declares independence unilaterally it will have to be someone other than FIG. Further, if it was to be recognised immediately by the UK in these circumstances then it wouldn't be unilateral would it?

Face it, you've lost the plot.

Commander Dod, You seem to have a funny idea on how the British constitutional system works. Perhaps you were asleep during the lectures at Dartmouth you supposedledly on that subject or possibly skived off for a dip in the hoggin
HM the Queen has NO executive powers. All she can do is advise and warn her Prime Ministers of whatever party and I think she has done that pretty well. I think there were 14 at the last count starting with Churchill.
The only time a royal perogative has been invoked in recent years was in Australia when PM Gough Whitlam was dismissed by the governor general, an Australian appointed by HM on the advice of the Aussie govt.
I think the MLAs in FIG are consulted about who should be thier governor also
I dont think the FIs want to go for UDI anyway but if thats thier wish, so be it. Its not like Rhodesia where most of the population were disenfranchised to start with
Perhaps you are a real RN (rtd) commander in which case there is no harm in giving out your service number, though I suspect it will probabably be the phone number of a massage parlour in Hastings

@32 Ignoring the crass and stupid personal comments , I draw my most unlearned friend to the Constitution of the Falkland Islands (that UK Statutory Instrument that can be found on the FIG website):

    CHAPTER V
    THE EXECUTIVE
    Executive authority
56.—(1) The executive authority of the Falkland Islands is vested in Her Majesty.
    (2) Subject to this Constitution, the executive authority of the Falkland Islands shall be exercised on behalf of Her Majesty by the Governor, either directly or through officers subordinate to him or her.

Never mind Dartmouth, it was my time at Greenwich and Watchfield that equipped me for the wider world that's so clearly a mystery to you and AB Slater (so sorry to hear about Alzheimer's in one as young as him).

On another matter, I was genuinely pleased to see the pointer in Mercopress that hinted that the Canadian Government is sending an official monitoring team to supervise the Referendum next month, complete with a Uruguayan citizen to observe them observing. It would be nice if one of the world's Republics were to do the same.

You are correct, FIG can unilaterally declare independence. Executive power is exercised by the Governor. Should he wish to declare independence as a republic it can indeed be unilateral. And the UK would indeed recognise it.

However, should it wish to declare independence as a Commonwealth Realm (more likely) then it would have to pass legislation together with Westminster passing complementary legislation.

It would be interesting if anything to do with the Falklands made it to he ICJ. There is currently no international legal definition of a “nation” as in a “people”. That could open an interesting can of worms.

One of the common definitions was provided by Renan in his 1882 work 'Qu'est-ce qu'une nation?':

“A nation is a soul, a spiritual principle. Two things which are really only one go to make up this soul or spiritual principle. One of these things lies in the past, the other in the present. The one is the possession in common of a rich heritage of memories; and the other is actual agreement, desire to live together, and the will to continue to make the most of the joint inheritance.... The existence of a nation is a daily plebiscite, just as that of individuals is a continual affirmation of life.”

    Describes the Falkland Islanders perfectly.

Chapter 1, Article 1, Paragraph 2 of the UN Charter refers to the “self-determination of peoples”.

Even more interesting that 'peoples' has never been defined considering it is mentioned in one if the bedrocks of international law.

Countries much larger and more important and considerably more powerful than Argentina (China and Russia spring to mind first) have a vested interest in the current ambiguity. The last thing they want is for the UN to gain a legal definition of what constitutes a people and how they can legally declare independence.

Funnily enough the UK wouldn't worry so much.

@52 serendipity - I'll ignore the double negative in your message but you clearly miss the point and cannot pay attention. The Uruguayan stats you quote are enviable - long may they continue. However, these are caused by Mr Jurica's ruling government so my point still stands - i.e. that Mr Cardoso is a puppet of the Argentine government and so he is not responsible for your country's impressive record.
I suggested that it would be good for Mr Cardoso to visit the Falklands so he can educate himself about the Islands as he is supporting the Malvinista line.

@64 I'm in Pompey in July for the type 42 reunion why don't you come and introduce yourself, or in fact post a link to the Navy list as a retired officer you'll be in it right?

Well done that's helpful, I'll just get one from Caledonia just need your name and then we'll be sorted. SD never interested me why go to that bother of being talked down to in the wardroom when you could live quite happily in the Chiefs mess unless the money drove you on. Anyway we all know where the backbone of all armed services are and it ain't in the bunhouse.

Your words: ”I think it's good that the Uruguayans want to come to the Islands (to observe real democracy in action)“. That's not only about Cardoso.

Well slatzzz, you've had an interesting few hours I see. What's your verdict? Is the commander ex British Forces or not? I was going to say ex British Forces or full of shit but either way he's full of shit.

Not long until the referendum. Did I mention that it will be internationally supervised and recognised? I don't mean like Timmerman's scam in London this week either.

I see the commander thinks I tell porkies. Interesting. I wonder if he's talking about that “little something” that happened in early November (forecast for October so I guess you could say I got the date wrong). Ever wonder why inward investment stepped up several gears very shortly after November Commander? Or did you even notice that it did? No. I didn't “Think” so.

    Such deadbeats.

@80 Sr Think. Can you be trusted with a Confidence or two? If you promise not to tell anyone outside of the English Speaking World I'll let you know what the first generation Aussie immigrant is alluding to.

It's the Port William “development” to replace the temporary UK MOD provided FIPASS. Inward investment sometime, possibly, once some sort of funding is sorted out. Sadly, it hasn't yet impacted the SP for FI Holdings but I'm ever hopeful.

And to be really well informed have a look at these:

Your right mate, Real officers earn respect, the others think they are entitled to it because they are officers.

I've served under some good one and I have served under some bloody awful ones.

Above all, loyalty, loyaly to their men is the finest command skill that they can display. I've had officers see to it that their men eat first, rest first and sleep first, then see to themselves. Strange thing though they are the ones that the guys tend to make sure are looked after, because they are so good. I've also seen officers who have been made sure they get everything first and more and could not care less, about anything other than their own careers and crawling to ingratiate themselves with their bosses.

Sad to say, I know of at least one of them who reached high rank, not staff rank, but high enough.

I do not know whether he was an officer, his obvious contempt for the lower ranks makes me think he was not, or if he was, he was one of those I would not have pissed on if he was on fire, (Hows that for lower deck?)

    Oh dio,

Your stories serving in the army make me cry boys, really...

I just waiting for the part were your superior officer made love to you (see here I was really polite).

I guess that when a superior officer mistreat the troops a good method to correct his mistake is by shooting him in @ss and then kick his head until ask for her mother.

    That never fails.

We do not use Argentine methods in our Army.

Which is probably why they were able to defeat you so easily.

Relationships between officers and other ranks are prohibited by Queens Regulations. Though I will admit, I saw some stunning female bosses in my time.

@87. “I guess that when a superior officer mistreat the troops a good method to correct his mistake is by shooting him in @ss and then kick his head until ask for her mother.”

When your “brave” Dirty War's officers who were in charge of standing on the Islanders necks “requested” (no, begged for) the “honor” of keeping their side arms after their surrender, it wasn't as the usual officer-to-officer courtesy. It was because if they surrendered them they would have been at what little mercy they deserved from their own soldiers they abused through your Dirty War and the illegal FI invasion and occupation itself as per their character. Don't project your military's culture onto the British soldiers, sailors and airmen who liberated the Islands from your fascist tyranny (the one your country continues to celebrate with coins and medals).
