    Speaking about (pantomime) horses....

    British Environment secretary says...:
“ Investigations into how beef products had been contaminated with horsemeat were ongoing...”

    I say....:
Nice example of British “Stiff Upper Lip” or, as we mortals call it, “Lies”...
“Beef products **”contaminated“** with horsemeat”, he says......
“100% contaminated with horsemeat”, the laboratories say....

Don't be so simplistic. This looks as if it is moving to a criminal investigation.

It is far more complex than you seem to be able to comprehend.

YOU are doing something about it?
    YOU?
The London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR) scam has been going on for, at least, thirty (30) years.

If it wasn't for some AMERICAN bankers trying to save their own skin from going to prision, it would have continued for another 30......

    And what does LONDON do?
Say to the rest of the world...:
    ”We are sorry, old Chaps....
    W'ont happen again ;-)

Precisely the kind of British “Stiff Upper Lip” aka “lies” your British Environment secretary shows when calling it..:
    **“Beef products contaminated with horsemeat”**
    When reality is..:
    **“100% pure, unadultered horsemeat”**

I'm loving the schadenfreude so gleefully and prolifically vomited by Think.

Interesting that he seems to honing in on the British part of the story when it is Britain that is blowing the whole thing into the open.

Especially considering one if the main culprits is Findus-a SWEDISH company.

And the source of the meat may be from FRANCE and/or ROMANIA!!!!!!

Though the EU consumes 80,000 tonnes of horse meat a year, about a third of which is imported from countries including ARGENTINA.

Now that would be funny. God forbid Argentina lose another source of export income. Perhaps Findus could repackage it for export to Argentina.

@18 Yes, you eat every part of the cow. Some of my Argentine friends love the fatty parts I wouldn't touch but it is a matter of individual taste.

British beef is amongst the safest in the world, that is a fact. This news story concerns PROCESSED food using meat from other countries and processed, for the most part, in other countries. There is nothing wrong with eating horse meat and Argentina exports horse meat for consumption in countries that enjoy eating it.

This is likely to be a criminal investigation because the processors, retailers and consumers were lied to by the suppliers of the meat. Where the meat came from has been reported as Romania, Ireland, even Argentina but it will take time for the facts to be confirmed. A thorough investigation will determine the source.

I agree that I wouldn't eat processed food but it is for sale in supermarkets in the UK and in Argentina (I know, I shopped in them when I lived there for months at a time). So, some Argentines do eat processed food, even if you don't.

I prefer to cook from scratch when I am at home but I have no control over what I am served in restaurants on my travels, other than to choose a good establishment or take a recommendation. It works most of the time though I did get salmonella poisoning from a restaurant in Mar del Plata and once had the worst meal I can ever recall in a restaurant in Chiloé; I swear everything came out of a tin and was inedible. But that is not bad considering how much I travel.

Canada and Mexico are in North America, veterinary drug capital of the world. Argentina does not use them... we are too poor anyway, remember?

No tainted horsemeat like the UK, no kangoroo meat like Australia, no mad cow like Brazil, no BGH cows... that's why there hasn't been a mad cow case on a human in Argentina in 247 years unlike Europe, and no rampant “premature sexual maturity” in girls, unlike in the USA, Mexico, etc, where girls are getting their periods at age 8.

They honestly can't see that Think, I've been trying to tell them for months how pathetically sad they appear when they engage in such behavior, but they still do it.

It's an incorrigible European trait I suppose. They do that all the time with their history too.

For example, when they want to insult Argentina about not having as many “contributions” they proudly vaunt: “Europe... acqueducts, printing press, telescope, cars, the ”www“... our history is so much richer than yours too”.

But then when I naturally (and predictably) mention all the wars, the tortures, the genocides, the disease, the crusades, etc... they immediately jump “oh, but you can't blame US modern Europeans for that!”

They want all the appurtenances of long history but disown all the baggage. Same as you said, with taking all the credit when their nations do something well today, but then blame the UN or EU if something just doesn't go well.

    It's puerile, it's vacuous, it's sad.

For your information, horse meat to far leaner and more healthy than beef. You are right that chickens in Argentina are awful. One of my much travelled Argentine friends pointed it out to me. Companies as always in corrupted Britain will not get any sanction (like the banks) and in 3 months the same companies will be selling hamburgers with meat rat on it and if something happen they can always use the “Wasn’t me” trick ask Romanians...

    @21 Nostril

Thanks very much for that link. Quite interesting really that you want to judge modern day Australia by something that happened 32 years ago in 1981. Nothing more recent?

Why do I find this so interesting? Well you are the first to jump up and down when modern day Argentina is tarred with the brush of 1981. You know, a year in which Argentina wasn't a democracy. Was run as a military dictatorship. Not sure if they were still throwing people out of planes in that actual year. And the economic problems were mounting. The Falkland Islands seemed like such a convenient scapegoat.

You continually harp on about how disingenuous all the non-Argentineans are when they bring up examples from the past to attack the present. Mind you I'm not surprised you are such a hypocrite.

But I'm glad you once again highlighted how well Australia does things. 32 years ago Australia had a food standards problem and it tackled that problem. It hasn't been repeated. Indeed we now try to regulate foreign countries through our live trade exports-not something I'm not in total agreement with.

32 years ago Argentina had a problem. I think it was called 'La última junta militar'! Interesting that it is just the LAST one. Have to differentiate from the others I suppose. Didn't learn after the LAST one before? Or the one before?

Did Argentina learn? By the increasingly autocratic tendencies of the current Argentinean government, the answer would seem to be no. By the mounting economic problems, the answer would seem to be no. By the increased Falkland Islands rhetoric, the answer would seem to be no.

Indeed considering the current state of the Argentine economy, it appears as if mistakes from less than 30 years ago are starting to be repeated.

32 years ago Australia had a problem and fixed it.
32 years ago Argentina had a problem and is now repeating them.

So tell me, which country did you paint in a bad light with you comment?

    Australia learns.
    Argentina doesn't.

Argentina: no cases of mad cow in its history

    “No need to learn anything.”
The usual arrogant statement we have come to expect from you.
Every country needs to learn either from its own mistakes or the mistakes of others.

The trouble with Argentina is that it does not seem to have grasped this principle.

Your problem, as a self confessed isolationist, you think that your Country“mendoza” can live in a bubble of perfection requiring nothing from outside your boundaries. Good luck to you if this is what you believe.
North Korea thinks like that but its neighbour South Korea does not,
In which country would you rather live ?

    @57 Nostrils

“You can't learn from mistakes when you are perfect.”

Oh I've never claimed that Australia is perfect. That would be false and conceited.

But it is a hell of a lot better off than Argentina especially considering we have such similar histories..... well we were lucky enough to have the British Empire found us and not the Spanish Empire.

“Argentina: never sold kangoroo meat as beef.”

I'd hope not! Have you ever seen a kangaroo for real? From the DFAT website:
'The Australian kangaroo industry estimates that it exports kangaroo meat to more than 55 countries. Kangaroo meat is increasingly popular and export markets are expected to increase since kangaroo is considered one of the finest game meats. Its growing appeal stems from its well-flavoured, slightly gamey taste. Kangaroo meat contains very little saturated fat relative to other meats and is high in protein, zinc and iron.'

Worth about US$250 million a year. Nowhere near our US$5 billion exports of beef.

And I don't shy away from your claim. We did wrong and fixed the problem. Has there been a repeat of this since 1981?

Argentina: never sold horse meat as beef.

Correct I am guessing. I'll take your word. Australia has. Back in 1981!

“Argentina: no cases of mad cow in its history”

    Neither has Australia.

    Let's try some more:
Australia: never had a case of foot and mouth
Australia: never had a military government.
    Australia: never defaulted on debt.
Australia: never had inflation above 30%
Australia: never re-denominated a worthless currency.
    Australia: never invaded a neighbour

Argentina has had all these things SINCE 1981.

    “No need to learn anything.”

Really? Australia learns from countries like Argentina all the time.

And when it comes to learning from our mistakes, we don't keep repeating them like Argentina.

It only the EU had learnt from our mistake.

It does seem likely that the horse meat originated from Romania and was illegally exported, then passed off as beef.

I know how desperate you anti-Brits are trying to make this entirely a British issue but you fail miserably. British meat is safe. Horse meat was illegally sold by Romanians for process in France and sold to the UK as beef. This scam has been uncovered in the UK and the government are dealing with it.

Think on this.... how do you know your processed meat is 100% beef in Argentina? Can you really trust your government that lies to you every single day?

its a shame this unfortunate issue of mislabelling on beef products originating in europe has strangely given our pro-argentine chums a extremely rare opportunity to have a raging hard on as they somehow see this as UK incompetence but even they surely understand that this isnt the case and that the incident happened outside the UK and beyond its control, and that is all it is at this moment in time “mislabelling” unless of course any trolls out there have concrete proof of anything untoward then i suggest they contact the relevant authorities with their information, otherwise admit they know nothing and would be better off using their time to organise food aid for all those poor people in BA. Maybe the pro-argentine paper “Independent” can help with that.

I just can't see how any instrument of government in Argentina - whether it be food standards agencies or otherwise - could break from the mold and be objective, transparent, efficient, free from corruption and central government interference. The chances of any scandals being uncovered there - unless it serves against a political opponent or to exert control over a sector seem highly unlikely in this context.

@68 Absolutely it is fraud. The Romanians committed fraud by selling it to the French as beef. The French possibly committed fraud by processing it and selling it to the UK retailers as beef. Let us hope they are prosecuted.

The retailers in the UK have been the victim of fraud.

I don't know if you have ever been to the UK but to say the food is horrible is stupid in the extreme. Some food is shit and some is excellent. The same as in Argentina. Interestingly, the number of people, particularly in BsAs, that complain about the food there is high. Menus are pretty similar in so many establishments and the people there complain endlessly about it. Pasta, pasta, pasta. No decent chicken anywhere and cheap cuts of meat unless you eat in expensive restaurants. (These have more tourists than locals).

@67 I agree. But Argentina sells processed meat also in supermarket meals. Personally, I wouldn't eat ready meals but people do in the UK and in Argentina.

I have just come back from a shopping trip and decided to look at the meat counters in Sainsbury's and Morrisons supermarkets to see the source of their suppliers.
All the meat I could see was sourced from Scottish farms.
    Beef all Scottish sourced.
Lamb was either Scottish or New Zealand, (if frozen)
Pork was from various UK or Danish sources.
Venison Scottish or New Zealand .
Milk sourced from local Scottish dairies - I can see the cows from my back window.
Poultry is sourced from our local Agricultural college - no hormones or anti-biotics permitted.
So. it appears we are fairly lucky here as we do not buy any processed meats other than salamis or cold ham.

As a result, they travelled to the UK looking for a job. But they couldn't be used. We're picky. Anything argie makes us vomit. So we ground them up and used them as pig food! Initially, it was a bit of a problem. Used to put them in the grinder feet first. But they kept jabbering in their gibberish and making high-pitched noises. After that, we fed them in head-first. A lot quieter. No more need for the ear protectors. But the pigs fart a lot. Do you think there's any connection?

Britain has been a soft touch for dishing out well intentioned benefits, to such an extent that some cannot match job income against the benefits. Benefits are regardless of origin, a new EU arrival gets as much as british national. New limits have been introduced so limits benefits to £25,000 pa, the average household income. Prior to this limit, benefits were effectively unlimited. This particular type of case is becoming rarer and rarer. It's a fantastic house in fantastic location, jammy buggers.

    @ElaineB

Stop talking BS please. Will you?

Any dog in Argentina even from the streets eats far, far, far better meat that what you can eat in a expensive restaurant in UK.

The meat ate in Argentina has an average of 2 days after the animals was sacrificed that makes a substantial difference with a similar cut in UK that at least got 6 months frozen.

Chicken, chicken, chicken, bla, bla your chickens comes mostly from Brazil and they are all over Europe.

All “commercial” chickens are processed using an industry standard that was taken from Netherlands called Chille or something like that. People in Argentina complain about chickens because they want chicken from “Granjas” that means the chicken was raised naturally like 50 years ago and without any industrialisation stuff.

So in short UK has the worst food I have ever seen, don’t trust Argies ask any French and he will tell how bad is the food in UK compared with France, Italy or Argentina.

The problem with you seems to be that you got accustomed to eat British crap food and when you do that it is quite difficult to know what is good or bad.

But back to the main point. This appears to be a part of a serious fraud originating in Romania. None of the meat passed off as beef has been tested as harmful, (though it is early days in the investigation) and the issue is one of fraud.

You keep saying how crap food is in Britain and how wonderful it is in Argentina.
I was just quoting from a top restaurant survey which did not have 1 Argentinian restaurant in the world's top 100.
If what you said was true then there should have at least been 1. Brazil had 3 I think !!

As to your laughable rant about the quality of food in the UK, it just shows your supreme ignorance on the matter, unless, of course, you have a degree in veterinary science or food hygiene - which I doubt.

It is pretty obvious that you know very little about food in the UK . If you want crap food, you can certainly get it - mostly imported at a low price. Locally produced food, beef, lamb pork and venison is exported at a premium price because of its quality and is available here - at a price..
You say British food is crap and inedible, I have heard the same about food in Argentina. Generalities are not necessarily true.
Anyway, no one could take any of your posts as unbiased or having anything other than a small basis of fact extrapolated to a ridiculous extent.

http://en.mercopress.com/2013/02/09/scandal-extends-to-europe-horsemeat-in-frozen-lasagne-and-spaghetti-bolognese#comment215747: The rich are always well served by the very best restaurants in a country. Of much more interest is the quality of the average restaurant.

I have been to both the UK and Argentina many times. IMO the quality of food in the average Argentinian restaurant is far higher than the quality of food in the average UK restaurant. I do not have a degree in Veterinary Science or related field. My judgement on the quality of the food in both countries is based simply upon eating it.

Bad Food Britain by Joanna Blythman

“Award-winning investigative food journalist, Joanne Blythman turns her attention to the current hot topic - the state of British food. What is it about the British and food? We just don't get it, do we? Britain is notorious worldwide for its bad food and increasingly corpulent population, but it's a habit we just can't seem to kick. Welcome to the country where recipe and diet books feature constantly in top 10 bestseller lists, but where the average meal takes only eight minutes to prepare and people spend more time watching celebrity chefs cooking on TV than doing any cooking themselves, the country where a dining room table is increasingly becoming an optional item of furniture. Welcome to the nation that is almost pathologically obsessed with the safety and provenance of food but which relies on factory-prepared ready meals for sustenance, eating four times more of them than any other country in Europe, the country that never has its greasy fingers out of a packet of crisps, consuming more than the rest of Europe put together. Welcome to the affluent land where children eat food that is more nutritionally impoverished than their counterparts in South African townships, the country where hospitals can sell fast-food burgers, but not home-baked cake, the G8 state where even the Prime Minister refuses to eat broccoli. Award-winning investigative food journalist...
