Whales have been beaching themselves in the Falklands long before the hydrocarbons industry came along. In fact, it is an occurance across the world, so I am sorry to say, but this one isn't the Falkland Islander's fault! But nice try. Maybe the pilot whales were trying to escape from Argentina and become so desperate they didn't see the Falklands. So, I think we can blame the Argentines for this one...

Let me try to explain a bit about Marcos. Several people on here tend to believe Marcos is actually a chap called Mike Bingham. I tend to believe he may be but I am prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt based on his flat rejection of the idea.
Mike Bingham was in the Falklands in the 90s / early 00s. He was at one time the manager of Falklands conservation and was turfed out of that job because of his stance on fishing vs. conservation; penguins in particular. Long story short, FIG tired to throw him out, he took them to court and won.
Now, whether Marcos is Mike or not probably only they know. What I can say though is that Marcos has a large amount of local knowledge and loves to tease his Mike Bingham accuses with that knowledge. He will sternly reject the accusation and then round off the post with a bit dollop of local intelligence.
He would have to have been part of the community at some stage to know some of what he knows. He simply says he gets it all from the Internet. Bullshit!
Options could be:
He is Mike Bingham
He is someone else and is amongst us right now
He has lived at some time, and recently, amongst us
He is being fed the info from someone who is one of the above
At the end of the day it's not important. Mike Bingham was a deadbeat and Marcos is of the same calibre.
What's on for the weekend mate? What are you into in your spare time? I love Melbourne.
He claims to have gained his knowledge from a three day visit to the UK three years age. Rubbish, he is a Britsh Argentine Ex pat and a treacherous one at that.

Feb 15th, 2013 - 10:34 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Yes I read up recently on Mike Bingham. Someone posted a link denigrated the FIG. I'm of the view that governments aways make mistakes. It is how they react, rectify and improve that is a better reflection.
I guess that is one if the biggest differences between many Argentineans and say Aussies or Kelpers. We know our governments do good but we make sure they pay or change when they do wrong. Populism doesn't seem to take deep root in British or British-derived societies.
Mike Bingham's websites are nothing if not mediocre and he certainly wears his persecution complex well.
Even if Marcos is telling the truth, who travels all the way around the world for 3 days. What a juvenile and facile person, to judge a country in 3 days!
At last count I have travelled to 28 countries and spent 4 years travelling. Every single country was awesome. Just because I wouldn't live there doesn't mean that I will slag it off.
Either way Marco's post was pathetic. He is nothing if not consistent. With the islands having such a small population it isn't surprising that: 1/ people are related and 2/ that some people have more than one job.
Oh that's right I remember thinking the other day that perhaps one of the reasons Doveoverdover is so bitter is because the FIG learnt a lesson and checked his CV. Bitterness like his is usually a sign of rejection.
As for my weekend, we're onto our fourth 30C+ day so I'm not too energised (27C next Wed is our lowest temp this coming week). My poor Border Collie is feeling worse! I bought a block of land 5 years ago which I now need to offload as uni starts it in 2 weeks-off to the estate agent. Which reminds me.... later I'll jump on a tram and hit the Vic Market and then walk up to uni to buy some text books! Looks like my trip to Latin America in July is not happening as my Colombian flatmate's family is heading down under in just over a month! The silver lining is that I might go at Xmas and might go via Chile or BA not LA.

I love those trams although when we were there last year we were as confused as a lot of the people at the train stations and on the trams by your new ticketing system. Myci? Or something like that.
I'm sure it's all settled down now but everyone told us that it was a bit of a messy introduction. We tried to buy a ticket from Glen Waverley to the city that would also allow us unlimited travel around Melbourne. From memory it cost us AUD11 per adult and less per child which we thought was very cheap. The lovely lady who sold us the tickets was terribly sorry for us over the cost. She was sure it should've cost less but the new system wasn't letting her sell us the correct ticket. It was very sweet because everybody kept apologising to us about it.
As for Marcos, what can I say. Nothing really. Mike or not he is bitter like Dove. I think the “R” word is getting them all upset.

By the sound if it you love my city which pleases me no end. I like to think we are pretty polite, especially for a large city. I'm sure you'll be back but hopefully I'll get there first.
And you are right, the bitterness is palpable. You have surely notice the increased rhetoric from the Argentine government and the massive increase in trolling.
I read the UK government's paper on Scotland that was released this week. What was most interesting was the historical depths that the UK government could so easily go into to discuss the issues regarding Scottish independence. It made me realise why the UK doesn't go in for the arguing over minutiae regarding the Islands.
Argentina is only an irritant, nothing more. Britain obviously takes the long view. It is one of the longest continuing stable states in the world and can draw on extremely deep and detailed archives and records not to mention a world class legal and diplomatic corp. I won't compare this to Argentina because they honestly aren't in the same league.
Marcos isn't a challenge. Actually I have yet to come across a anti-FI poster that is a challenge. DoD tries to big everyone down in semantics to cover his desperation and bitterness. Toby, tantrums on a daily basis. Raul, posts the same things again and again. Alex Arg the same. The rest... well the rest.... LMAO.
My brother got the Spanish genes and I got the full-on Danish ones, so definitely not going out in the sun today.

According to IATA I can bring in up to US$10,000 cash without declaring it. I'm pretty sure EVERYONE will prefer me to pay with US$.
Should be an awesome holiday.

I've for plenty of time and also constant devaluations, currency restrictions and inflation don't erode my wealth and spending power. Within the next 3 years I plan on travelling to another 20. And I'll do that while a full time student.
I could have spent 3 days in BA last year but that is a pathetic amount of time and I would have been a mere tourist. I did enjoy my two months in Colombia.
And amazing to hear about the nuclear reactor. It is a credit to Argentina.
But I'm sure they were asking for credit when the reactor was shut down LESS than a year after starting due to dodgy fuel plates and leaking water. Our high safety standards found the faults and a planned EIGHT WEEK shutdown extended to TEN MONTHS to fix. And that Australia was forced to modify it.
I guess we learnt our lesson on buying Argentine.

This is the opposite to talking about sex. I have literally spoken to THOUSANDS of other travellers about travelling WHILE travelling.
It's also how I end up in places like the Basque Country instead of Madrid. How I hitchhiker from London to Dublin but actually ended up in Belfast instead. How I couldn't find accommodation in Paris so ended up in Normandy.
I tell you what, you Argentineans sure make up some weird shit to attempt to shut down debate. You are the first one that bought up travel. And now don't wanna talk about it. Poor Marcos, are Chile and Uruguay the extent of your future travel plans? Can't get US$? Or can't get a wage increase to beat inflation?
It is now painful obvious that you have done very little travel if any. So perhaps you have learnt a lesson and won't bring it up next time as an unrelated topic.
