This is a quite ridiculous argument put forward by the Argentinians, who themselves as a former Spanish colony that declared independence in a territory that certainly wasn't their own. There were no indigenous people in the Falklands. I am not sure either that we should enter into any dialogue with a country that illegally invaded this territory, leading to the deaths of over 250 British people.

No matter how much reason you put to CFK and her government, you are wasting your time. They've committed themse;ves long ago to keeping the Falklands issue in the forefront, and the situation will not abate until the present Argentinian government falls and hopefully then a more democratic responsible one takes its place.

The are voting about whether to stay in the same building in which they have lived and made thier home for over 180 years. there is a considerable difference.

Mar 13th, 2013 - 03:46 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You seem to forget that just one of the Royal Navy's latest destroyers is capable of taking out the whole of Argentina's antiquated Navy and Air Force in less than 15 minutes .. and do so whilst still well out of range any of Argentina's defences. You also seem to overlook the fact that whilst there is talk about leaving the EU - which incidentally will never happen, because the vote will never happen - the UK and France (whose support for the British position is explicit and unequivocal) are effectively creating a single unified military force that will account for almost half of the total military expenditure in Europe .. not to mention the fact that large sections of the armed forces of countries like Holland, Denmark, Belgium and Norway effectively operate under British command. Britain is far from being as isolated as that propaganda you love to hear from the saggy old whore from La Plata.
It would also behove you to note that the EU constitution already regards the Falklands as British (a constitution which even Spain has signed) and that most EU member states are on public record as supporting that status quo, so there is no need for the EC to take a position, because its position is already crystal clear. As for Africa, perhaps it has escaped that tiny brain of yours that a hefty chunk of Africa has already expressed its support through the Commonwealth.
On the other hand, few of the countries that Argentina claims support them have actually expressed any support for Argentina's sovereignty claim. They have for the most part only expressed support for negotiations .. negotiations which Argentina refuses to be a part of. Even dear old Russia, who Britain has a far from good relationship with, has explicitly stated that it supports self-determination for the Falklands.
Perhaps you also forget that whilst Brazil and Chile pay public lip-service to Argentina, both have quietly extended and deepened their pre-existing defence agreements with the UK.
I've come to the conclusion that she is just a fucking cheeky bastard who likes having the Gringos and Pirates as enemies. Plain as day that she does not want the islands. If they did get them who would they then blame for their incompetencies and corruptness? She has the IMF and us Colonialists which will play well with the rest of the continent's politicians who are also a throwback to the 19th century.

I'm the sort of person who likes to get on with people, to listen to them and to compromise wherever possible. I've listened to CFK and her malvinista cronies and their historical and geographical arguments. They are feeble and deserve absolutely no further consideration. If somebody turned up at my door and said he wanted my house because one of his relatives once lived here for a few weeks. I'd tell him to f*** off. If he said he just wanted discussions about me handing over the property I'd still tell him to f*** off. If he said that he wanted me to “give peace a chance” I'd either call the police or hit him. I might suggest he takes legal advice. The same applies to CFK and her ilk, her only reasonable option is to take her crazy claim to the ICJ, but of course she won't.

On the other hand, i have never agreeded on that stupid argument, which considers the population from the islands, like an implanted population, because while it is true that the actual population from the islands, is the result of the british usurpation in 1833, it's also true that after the genocide committed against the originary populations, by conservative killer julio roca, when he decided to occupy the patagonia, many inmigrants started to populate that vast territory, so, if the islanders are an implanted population, they aren't less implanted than many inhabitants from the mainland.
However, despite that genocide, our constitution includes the claims and the rights of the originary populations, which is a true historic reparation. That's' something that the u. k. has never made for arg., for having deprived it of exercising it's right over the archipelago, because unfortunatelly, such an admirable nation like the u. k., in some aspects still behaviours like the same thief of XIX century.
On the other hand, it's not true that the territory don't belong to the islanders. It belongs to them, in the same way that all the rest of argentina belongs to them also, beside, the islands belong to we all too.
If the right to self determination is not applicable for the population from the islands, is because arg. was deprived of exercising it's rights over the territory by the u. k. in 1833, beside since 1982, that country rejects sistematicly to resume the negotiations, and find a peaceful solution, as the u. n. call both countries. There is a lot more to say about all this question.

I have always thought and said exacty the same about the arguments that i expressed in my comment. Anyway, if you consider it like a miracle, i would like to know when will we see the miracle of watching the u. k. respecting the u. n.'s resolutions that call both nations to resume the negotiations and find a peaceful solution for this conflict, instead of using the hypocrite argument of self determination, which has never been applied for this cause, like it was invoked for other colonial situations by the u. n.
I would like to see the miracle also of reading the comments of many of you, recognizing that the case has strong and weak aspects for both countries, instead of reading you usuall mediocre comments, where you buy the british propaganda so easily, without any critic, if i see these two actions, then i will have to start to think about papacy miracles defenetly.
Axel, you appear to sit on the Argentine side of this argument. Perhaps you could explain in simple terms why the Argentines believe these islands belong to them ?

What I don't believe:
That the islanders are squatters

However, according to the international right, the discovery just gives a precarious title, which muts be improved with a permanent occupation, that's yhy i think that maybe the u. k. had rights over the islands in 1833.
On the other hand, the rights of our cuntry were based on the succession of states, which is applied to all the emancipated colonial territories. While it is true that spain had never ceded anything to our country, when it declared it's independence in 1816, it is also true that the u. p. didn't need spains' licence in order to declare it's independence, and it had right to occupy the territories which had been submitted to the jurisdiction of the viceroalty, like the islands.
For all these reasons, i have always thought that if the u. k. had rights over the islands, it should have negotiated a solution with the u. p., or maybe share the sovereignty, instead of depriving our country of exercising it's rights.
On the other hand, i have never omitted the periods of silence of our country, in relation to it's claim. Beside, the signed agreement in 1850 didn't have anything to do with this cause.
However, it would be honest to take the into account the huge economic dependence that arg. had with the u. k., since XIX and for more than 100 years, so, it was obvious that it wasn't in conditions for claiming.
On the other hand, between 1884-1884, arg. suggested taking the case to the arbitration, which was rejected by the u. k., beisde in 1947, the u. k. proposed to take just the dependencies to the i. c. j.
Beyond all these facts, in 1968, 1974 and in 1980, the u. k negotiated with arg. about this cause.
All these facts show that the case has strong and weak aspects for both nations. This is what i call intellectual honesty.
There is a lot more to say about this cause.
