Falkland Islands’ referendum, Argentina should yield to reality and peoples’ self determination says Brazilian daily

Thursday, March 14th 2013 - 09:14 UTC
Full article 57 comments

Under the heading of “Malvinas: British” the influential Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo describes the 99.8% result of the Falklands referendum as a “compelling defeat” for the Argentine government and a litigation hard to sustain when international law rests more on the peoples’ perspective than in the historic, real or imaginary territorial possession. We love you Brazil. You loved our Olympics, we are eagerly looking forward to yours in 2016. As British people we want everyone on earth to live in peace and freedom with democracy. It's great to hear so many people from Brazil and Chile trying to talk some sense into Argentina.

Argentina, just listen to your South American brothers!

There is a sparkle of common sense and humanity in South America after all,
however they made a slight typo its The “Democratic” Falkland Islands not “Malweeners”

However, I did Love this bit....
“The referendum is a compelling DEFEAT for the Argentine government”,

    and.....
“when the economy is NOT WORKING elevates the understandable tone of the sovereignty claim”,

    also........
“Falkland Islands’ referendum, Argentina should yield to REALITY and peoples’ SELF-DETERMINATION ”

and how could i leave out this.....
“international law rests more on the peoples’ perspective than in the historic, real or IMAGINERY territorial possession”,

My oh my, what could Brazil be saying about Argentinas bullsh*t claim???

SELF-DETERMINATION.....Its contagious, we want more!!! :))))))

I think this is a simple consequence of the sensible people in South America deciding they have had enough of this situation. How can Kirchner hope to achieve sovereignty over the Falklands when 99.8% of the population want nothing whatsoever to do with Argentina. They have no in-roads whatsoever and I think other South American countries will start to realise the futility of all of this and start switching off when the rhetoric raises it's head over and over again.

Congratulations to the editor of Folha de Sao Paolo...........this was an inevitable consequence of the expression of the will of the people combined with visits of open minded journalists seeing things for what they are.

The Ed can now expect some pretty heavy visits from the RG embassy, and hope he has his car well insured. Lets hope the Brazilian people also respect the will of other people, and support their press.

Thank God, some sanity from Brazil! Hit the nail on the head there by identifying the core problem as virulent Argentine nationalism. We're all nationalistic to some extent. It wasn't just our sense of fairness and decency that spurred us to liberate the Falkland Islanders from Argentine invaders and oppressors. There were no apparent significant economic benefits to be had at that time. It would have been in Britain's economic interest, as El Presidente General Leopoldo Galtieri no doubt miscalculated, to abandon the Falkland Islanders to their fate, as that's exactly what he would have done under similar circumstances. He is quoted at the time to have said “What is that gringo woman going to do about it?” If a scraggy vagrant spits in your wife’s face; you don't consider his possible explanation or any potential financial implications, you immediately deck him.

Unfortunately I don’t think we can do very much about the mass anti-social personality disorder and national inferiority complex underlying the current malvinistas condition. The first thing that has to happen is that their children have to be properly educated about the true and specific history of the Falkland Islands. I know this is legally irrelevant, but the false history they are taught is at the core of this and provides them with the flimsy cloak of righteousness to ‘recover’ their ‘stolen property’. They should know that nothing was stolen (except the mainland from it’s indigenous inhabitants, obviously). As “that gringo woman” put it, “the wishes of the islanders are paramount”. Those wishes are now made abundantly clear, and that still applies today, morally and under international law.

Rights of those people to elect their own governments..the price was high..maybe too high...but the price was set by those who were denying it, not those who delivered it.

It's heartening, all the same, to see so many Argentinians coming out in support of the Chagossians.

They must surely have realized the best way to support self-determination for the Chagossians is to support self-determination for the Falklanders.

For surely denying self-determination to the Falklanders can only legitimize the British government's denial of it to the Chagossians?

#23 it is true the government of today is not the military government of 1982. However......it is still Argentina and the continuity of the state continues onward. All countries need to deal with the fact the the countrie's administrators come and go but the country goes on. Argentina should have striped it's former identity by changing the name if they believed that Argentina is not responsible for the actions of the junta. You're still Argentina baby......junta or peronist, it does not matter.

Brazil are making HUGE efforts to upgrade their infrastructure over the next decade or so and have recently held two impressive forums in New York and London to drum up investment and know how. They didn't bother having one in BA as they are a basket case. Brazil needs the UK on side much more than it needs the rantings of the mad woman.

“”The British government has shown its racism by denying self-determination to the people of Chagos. It is an overused example perhaps, but that is because it is true.“”“

Interesting you raise this because as an example or ”proof“ it is entirely illogical and bogus.

You see you appear to be saying that it would be ”Right & Proper“ for the UK to have supported Chagosian self-determination.

However you DONT want the UK to support Falkland self-determination.

That is fundamentally arse-about-face... you either support self-determination ”full stop”, in which case you can criticise the UK for Chagos, but you then HAVE TO support the Falklands rights to self-determination also (Unless you want to be totally hypocritical)....

    OR

You can openly exhibit double standards and hypocrisy by saying the Chagosians deserve self-determination but the Falklands dont... which then kinda makes the whole “Chagosian” argument of racism rather self-defeating as you have then just taken-up the “racist” position you have just accused the British of.

So, all in all, it isnt really a good argument for Argentina to pursue (perhaps why it has been dropped by their Government)

@18 Well, well, kiddikins. This is your “new” alias, is it? What a pity that you bring up Chagos. To do so demonstrates your stupidity. Shall we go through it again? No! You know full well what the facts and truth are. But it does demonstrate Britain's charity and generosity. Incidentally, on the subject of racism, can you explain the instances of Britain going to the aid of Portugal, Belgium, Poland. How about instances where Britain has had allies such as Russia, Prussia, Austria, the Maratha Empire, Hyderabad State, the Iroquis, the Cherokee, the Susu tribes, the Ashanti Empire, Spain, the Khoikhoi, Brazil, the Maori Kupapa, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nepal, various Indian princely states, the Mfengu tribe, Egypt, Italy, France, Japan, Malaya, Fiji, Kenya, South Korea, Israel, Oman, Jordan, Kuwait, Sierra Leone and Canada. Whereas argieland has racism as part of its “constitution”. That bit of paper that argies, including CFK, ignore whenever it's inconvenient. And, as Benson says, argies insist that everything that took place under the Junta has nothing to do with them. So WE British refuse to take responsibility for anything that took place before we were old enough to vote. Or anything that we didn't agree with at the time. What you got now?

While governments in SA may pay lip service to Argentina, any claims that their populations are 100% behind Argentina has always been bogus.

No matter what propaganda Argentina spew there will always be people that actually examine the evidence.

And if Argentina actually ever took over the Islands, what misplaced support they do have in SA would be quicky eroded by the reality of an Island population opposed to the invading administration.

36... and let's not forget the fact that if we had not recaptured the islands in 1982 the islanders where to be ejected from the Falklands to make way for the RGs implanted population.
A humiliated country like Argentina will always shout and bawl, double standards indeed, for it is they that are actively pursuing the colonisation of the Falklands.

I've got some news for you, some good and some bad.
The good news is that, I would be nice if that happened. The bad news is that it isn't going to.

I see the pattern, Argentines “Believe” in thier rightful claim to the Falklands...It doesn't exist

Argentines believe that God will now favour them..... He doesn't exist

As I have said before, now that, in the 21st Century, the whole world has woken up to the crimes, narrow mindedness and prejudices of the Catholic church, don't you think that it is fitting that the of it abomination should be Argentine?

THAT was why the whole of the UK banded together; some British were at the mercy of a bunch of argie arseholes and we would not tolerate that!

Please do not confuse the opinion of one newspaper with the opinion of the Brazilian nation as a whole. Most Brazilians don't even know what this stuff is all about, and most of those who know probably only remember it for the 1982 war. Truth is: Brazilians don't care much for the Malvinas case.

On the other hand, the referendum was hardly a surprise, since all of the local population is of descendants of British colonists.

#56 That is true as it is with most large notions. Most of the citizens really have very little idea of what goes on internationally and what is a major issue for this nation and that nation. Like in the USA, everyone is living to get by and dealing with issues and concerns that impact them on a day to day basis.

I have yet to come across any documentation that explicitly spells out Spain handing over the Falklands to Argentina during their independence from Spain, if one was to take the position that they belonged to Spain, which I do not.
