By Jimmy Burns (*) - This is the same President that has viewed Jorge Bergoglio as an opponent when he served as Cardinal Archbishop of Buenos Aires and has allowed her allies in the Argentine media to try and wreck his reputation by claiming, unjustly, he was complicit in the military regime’s dirty war. Just tell her to resign.
And stop the world laughing at her.
So far the pope seems approachable and popular. Whether he stays this way is dependent on his genuine concern for the poor remaining genuine and leading to a significant influence.
Mar 20th, 2013 - 02:25 pm - Link - Report abuse 0He is surely not going to destroy all this by appearing to abuse his position?
Again like most, he smiles politely at CFK and returns to more important matters when she has gone away.
Good article Jimmy. The pope should be nobody's puppet. We protestants are not interested in catholic musings and no sovereignty talks will be held, the referendum has spelt this out.

Mar 20th, 2013 - 03:39 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Since many months ago, i have started to think that it won't be easy to find an opinion by burns, which is not as mediocre as his usuall opinions published in mercopress.
Anyway, beyond burn's mediocre thought, it's necesary to mention about some issues which are very important, because we won't find them in any of burn's comments, due to they are always too partial.
Firstly, i would like to express that when i knew that bergoglio was named as the new pope, it wasn't a good news for me.
As a gay man, i can't forget his words, during the debate for gay marriage, when he compared the approbation of that law, with a war against god.
On the other hand, the are testimonies, and documents which signalize that bergoglio gave two priests during the dictatorship, and knew about the appropiation of babies, however he didn't do anything to denounce those terrible facts.
Anyway, it's also true that he helped some people to escape from the country during the dictatorshp, and made a huge work in behalf of the poor people, the war veterans of the war of 1982, and supported strongly the fight against traffic of people.
As you can see, he was a very controversial person.
I respect the mirth of many people in my country who are very happy with bergoglio's designation as the new pope, but i have reasons in order to not to be happy for his designation.
According to my ideologies, all the questions that i named in this comment are very important, especially in a country that is judging the last terrorism of state.
On the other hand, bergoglio has been critic of all the governments, but in reference to c. f. k's, his confrontation wasn't so big.
It's important to debate deeply about all these issues, especially if we talk about such a controversial person like jorge bergoglio. We won't find these issues in any of the comments published by burns, where he makes too partial analysis, and mediocre comparisons.
Let's face it, the world can do without CFK.
Mar 20th, 2013 - 07:31 pm - Link - Report abuse 0But, just to prove it, axel_arg turns up spouting existentialist drivel. None of which is intelligible. Because, despite years of trying to write in English, he's getting worse. Proving that teachers in argieland are just individuals employed as teachers because they can't do anything else. so let's recognise axel for what he is. He could have been a road sweeper, a toilet cleaner, a sewer cleaner. He wasn't up to one of these useful occupations. So he got a job as a teacher. An occupation organised by the argie government. Let's be fair. In a proper country, he doesn't have the brain to be a kindergarten teacher”. Like everything else that's argie, he's a fraud!

Mar 20th, 2013 - 08:19 pm - Link - Report abuse 0CFK never has the balls to do the accusing herself, but always gets 'reactionary elements' to do it for her.
Mar 20th, 2013 - 08:33 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It must be quite galling for her that the target of her hate campaign, Bergoglio, should become - overnight - one of the most influential people on earth, and massively more powerful than CFK herself.
What a nasty, preposterous article!
Mar 21st, 2013 - 08:47 am - Link - Report abuse 0The mediation over the Beagle Channel by a non-Argentine Pope involved a willing negotiation by two Catholic countries under the auspices of a non-Argentine Pope
And this guy is supposed to be a wordsmith?!
When Mrs. Fernandez reaches for her make-up, Francis washes feet.
Ridiculous misogynistic comparison; Cristina is just as much, in fact more so, a champion of the poor; personal style is less important than politics, and anyway Cristina has her own rapport with the masses
#8 Brilliant comment, you really are the voice of sanity on here =)

The hate campaign was actually a defence of the human rights of priests who he had failed during the Junta period, and thus justified from both a political and a Christian perspective. I suppose it really could be galling to end up in such a tricky position for having done the right thing! But Cristina has so far handled the situation magnificently, and hopefully the Pope will never again give her a reason to stop accentuating the positive...

Mar 21st, 2013 - 12:31 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Oh sure, CFK has always championed the poor, by keeping them poor, just like Chavez did.
Perhaps you should remember this saying:
Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime.
Politicians like CFK don't want the poor to be independent, to raise and improve their lifestyles, they 'need' them to remain poor - so they can feed them day by day and look like the great benefactors, so the poor will keep on voting for them.
However, if the poor were given the opportunity to work, gain skills, get better educated so they can get better paid jobs, which would in turn raise their standard of living, then the poor might no longer vote for these populist politicians.
CFK's personal wealth has increased by 1000% since becoming President. She is corrupt. She has stolen the money that would have improved the lives of the poor, and is feeding them on bread and water (which she feels they should be thankful for), whilst she dines on steak and wine.
It's despicable. She's despicable, and the way she is going, she'll meet a very violent end at the hands of the poor that she has robbed.
The last thing the new Pope needs is to be associated with this thief and human rights abuser.
The Pope doesn't need CFK, but CFK was desperate for some sign from the Pope that might have helped her grasp onto power and stave off the inevitable for a little longer.
Inflation is now at over 30% in Argentina, the poor cannot afford to buy food.
How does that saying go? Every civilisation is 3 meals away from revolution.
Meaning that if the 'people' don't get food for 3 meals, then they will turn to anarchy and revolution.
CFK better have that helicopter on standby, the wolves are getting hungry.
He will surely understand that, in the UK, as Pope he has virtually no ability to effect anything, this isn't South America, blind faith is in short supply here. All he has to do is say one word about the Falkland Islands and he may as well write off the UK completely for his entire papacy.
