When oil is involved, compromise is key

By Terry Karl (*) - The death of Margaret Thatcher will not change the necessity for or the timing of negotiations on the Falklands/Malvinas issue. This political football has re-emerged repeatedly – regardless of the leaders in power – usually for domestic reasons in both Argentina and the United Kingdom. There is little political will for a settlement in the short-term on either side, especially now that offshore oil is publicly and definitively in the picture. Read full article

    This woman is a professor?

Can she or anyone for that matter give me an example of when the UK has used the Falklands FOR domestic purposes WITHOUT prompting and direct previous action by Argentina?

She references this to oil, so if that was the case then why has the UK protected the Islands for the other 150 years before it was known about?

Also you don't really need a stable environment with countries in the same continent to recover oil. I'm going to presume she has never been to Nigeria?

Her argument is as flawed as her logic.

Her conclusion sucks, there will be no compromise, the Islands, along with the oil belongs to the islanders, always has always will. Got to love these academics and the cloud cuckoo land they inhabit. A world full of books and little else.

It has obviously escaped her attention that the Falkland Islands Government takes all the oil revenues, not the UK, which holes her argument below the waterline...

There is a particular kind of slimy, greasy intellectual that are obsessed with oil and smugly confident that they have seen through all the government smokescreens and the answer they come up with is always oil, even when there is none it is still oil.

#2 Anglotino She is an American, and a just a lecturer is called a Professor there. not like in Britain where a Professor is actually a leaned person who is respected. She knows nothing about any of it.

Apart from the fact that the Islands are British, and the population wants to remain British we all know you cant trust Rgs. If the present RG government agreed to something accepatble to both sides the next lot would tear it up and ignore it.

    Keep calm and carry on...

From a so called a champion of human rights how does “A negotiated compromise that will respect the identity of the Islanders, award territory to Argentina” represent the human rights of the Falkland Islanders ?

Faz- thnaks for the clarification! She sure has not a clue. How come the Oil Industry currently regards the Falklands Offshore area as a well manged politically STABLE area!
If anything to do with Argentina will make it more stable - then how come companies are not queued up at the door to do business in Argentina?

What a dumb article. She has so few arguments that she has to repeat herself to fill up space. The UK has domestic problems. No-one denies that. Although they aren't as bad as argieland's. But I can't recall any British politician, let alone the Prime Minister, making statements about the Falklands until it became appropriate to respond to argieland. Britain has no interest in “establishing a firm foothold” for two reasons. First, if it wants a foothold, it already has more than 790 of them. Because Britain could take back direct control. Second, the Islands belong to the Islanders. Nor, having been an empire, is Britain embarrassed by accusations of colonialism. Like a number of other countries, Britain has had colonies. So what? What a pity it is that Prof. Karl hasn't noticed that oil exploration is licensed by the Falkland Islands Government, not the British Government. Where does she get the idea that “U.K. and Argentina are bound together by more than 1.5 billion dollars in trade”. For the U.K., 1.5 billion dollars is chickenfeed. In 2011, U.K. trade with the U.S.A. alone was nearly £57 billion. That's over 87 billion dollars. That might be of concern. But “investing” in argieland is a non-starter. “Investing” in argieland requires a strong stomach, nerves of steel and loads of unwanted money. Because it will probably be stolen by the argie “government”. And since when do floating facilities need such investment?
There is a negotiated “compromise”. It's called the Falklands War. Britain won, argieland lost. “Dispute” solved. Permanently.

Judging by the low quality of the above article, Prof. Karl is hoping to recieve some sort of prize from the Kirchner (mis)government.

That is the only explanation for the incredible collection of non-facts tied together with ridiculous inventions.

Where, dear Terry, is your proof of a British PM using the Falklands as a smoke screen for the parlous state of the British economy?

Since when, dear Terry, has the FIG been the UKG??????

The article may sound plausible, but I disagree with almost every sentence, even if she comes over more as ill-informed than biased. Just taking the last paragraph: Argentina views the islanders as British, not Islanders; many people view the territory as never having belonged to Argentina; and Britain has no interest in local hydrocarbon development. So those three things almost certainly do NOT lie in the future.

As usual, I Can't Think is lying or cannot read formal set pieces. Her official synopsis shows her 'work' was finished before 1990.

Everything beyond that has been done with 'others'. She is the typical bullshitter of academia and portrays her involvement as 'almost' the Leader, but she is not.

And if you require further proof that this person and The Biggest Liar on MP are soul mates, look at her official photo; it must also date from 1980.

Anybody who has had the responsibility of interviewing and appointing very senior applicants for industry as I have knows one thing for sure: the longer the CV the more the bullshit. There comes a time when qualifications are not important: every applicant IS correctly qualified in that respect and my staff would never pass me an application of more than five pages (qualifications excluded). What matters is the posts they have held at very senior level and what they can bring to you, NOW.

This woman fails on very many levels but of course has bamboozled The Turnip In Chief, poor old duffer.

    https://politicalscience.stanford.edu/faculty/terry-karl check it for yourself.

“negotiated compromise that will respect the identity of the Islanders, award territory to Argentina and permit British participation in oil exploitation almost certainly lies in the future.”

No you uneducated dimwit-Falkland Islands independence almost certainly lies in the future-which will respect the identity of the Islanders, result in a zero compromise with' lets eliminate the local indigenous peopleland,' award the territory to the people who were born there ( what a novel concept) and permit the Falkland Islanders to control the oil exploration without interference from Argentina or the UK.

@36, Why yes, Ben, yes you did. But actually it was the car that my daughter drives and she has been in the process of making it hers through a mutual agreement between her me and her mom. And mind you, you ran off with it TWICE after breaking the window and hot-wiring for a couple joy rides including the last one where you dented the bumper, spilled milk on the seats and let it sit and stink up the car and there is some nasty sticky stuff in the back seat that we don't even want to think about let alone sit on. Then you told the judge that you were totally smashed that day and therefore don't deserve ANY consequences for it while crying out “MAN! THAT WAS A TOTALLY WICKED AWESOME RIDE” and posting pictures of it to Facebook and to this very day and of course you still insist that the car is now forever yours and when you took us in front of Judge Judy instead of a real claims court as we continue to demand and my little darling came up to the stand to testify you thew a fit and ran away and still insisted that you won the case on national television.

But wait, there's more! Then you borrowed the other neighbors tools and will only give back a fraction of them and the ones you give back are those stupid and useless toss-away brass spanners and allen wrenches that you get with the IKEA furniture kits and that's only to the neighbors who you hockey checked into agreeing to accept them. The ones who loaned you the nice table saw and snow blower still want them back and you are only offering to hand back the little red thingies over the power switches that are supposed to keep the little ones from turning them on.

Boy, Benson, you really ARE a douche aren't you.

Race of Zombies discovered in S America......
A 37 million strong race of zombies has been discovered in Argentina .
The zombies wander about chanting “ Malvinas , Malvinas ” .
The older ones often chant “ Peron , Evita ” for hours , whilst the younger ones tend to say “ Nestor , Cristina , Cristina ”
Vistors to Argentina are told the zombies are normally quite harmless , the best way to get rid of them is to give them some banners , a base drum and a glass of wine and barbeque , and a hand out of cash, though the younger ones also like laptops which they play with for hours .
Every few months, normally during the full moon , the zombies turn nasty and set trains on fire , loot stores and supermarkets and kill people , mostly Chinese and Korean shopkeepers . Normal people , called “golpistas” go on the streets banging pots and pans to try to frighten them away but this sometime inflames them even more .
The best way to get rid of is to offer them a job .
Asked if he was going to make a film about Zombies , Federico Urioste immediately turned into one , and was seen chanting “ Belgrano , Belgrano ” as he wandered off into the twighlight .

    “A negotiated compromise”

Like the ones that caused the 1982 war?

No, we need clear expressions of intent, not fudged compromise-which the Islanders are now expressing. We need-the Islanders to continue taking over their foreign policy from the UK.

They are doing a great job.

One day they may well have the money to do the defence gig as well.

    Maybe independence.

    Until then the UK protects.

    No compromise on Self Determination.

No compromise allowing Argentine imperialism and colonialism.
