Two million Argentines across the country join the biggest anti-government protest in years
Almost two million Argentines marched on Thursday evening across the country’s cities and towns in one of the biggest anti-government protests in years highlighting public anger over a deteriorating economy, corruption, street crime and President Cristina Fernandez efforts to reform the media, the courts and the constitution so she can bid for a third consecutive four year mandate. However, in all the manifestations, including yesterday, there were agressions against journalists, by small groups of reactionary and mediocre people, which was shamefully omitted in this report.
It necesary to hear what people said yesterday, and read their signs, instead of watching the pictures only, or reading a lammentable report like this, which analysis is decadent and too partial.
If many of those people who were protestting yesterday really cared about having more security, or fighting against corruption, they wouldn't claim c. f. k. only. They know they should claim the different governors too.
However when i see that the demands and the critics are adressed to c. f. k. only, then i realize that many of those people are just using these problematics hypocritically, but actually they don't have any genuine concerning in relation to those problems.
Everybody know that security doens't depend on c. f. k's decisions only, it's a responsability of the different governors too, according to our contitution.
On the other hand, people from capital, at the ame time that they criticised the denounces of corruption cases that invole c. f. k's govt., they didn't say a word about the corruption cases that involve mauricio macri's government, which shows the hypocrite using by the protestors.
Beside, they all omitted that justice must be independent not just from government, but from corporations too, however none of them said absolutly anything in reference to the legal protection that the clarin group could get since 2009, in order to not to comply with the new broadcast law. HYPOCRITES AND DECADENTS.

Yes, some people were agressive and rude and had no idea why they were there. Some people are just jerks. But, the majority knew and were well aware of why and what they were protesting against.
Of course that if you read the news in an officialist (pro-gov) newspaper, they were all rich and wanted a coup. If you read Clarin, or La Nacion, is a whole different story.
I don't believe either. But I am more likely to not believe in anything the government (or associated media) says, based on personal experience regarding inflation, security, employment, health care, and such.
Most people named CFK because ultimately she is the main responsible for the country's well being. And time and time again, she has proven that she and her gov. do not take any responsibility for anything. And most of the people in gov (aside from some exceptions) are from her party.
People are fed up. They want answers, they want changes. Inflation is galloping, crime is rampant and the only gov. response is “you are robbed because you are rich”, “you want to travel to Miami”, “you are a liar, inflation is only 10%”, “Macri did it”, “Clarin lies”. Ohh, and my personal favorite “you are protesting because you are fascist pig, and you are rich, obviously”.
Whether you support or dislike CFK, you cannot deny that inflation is extremely high, unemployment is soaring, crime is out of control, and corruption is rampant. I cannot believe that some people seriously believes that all news from Clarin, etc. are all made up. You only have to look around, and to look at all the people protesting, to see that her gov. is not perfect, far from it. None is, but she takes no responsibility and she is the freaking President.
I really cannot understand people that blind support her (or anyone).

Most of the “regular Argentines” on this site live outside of Argentina and have done so for many years, some have never lived there... and yet they would have us believe that they know more about Argentina than the people who actually live there.
Sadly posts like yours get swamped by the live-in trolls whos knowledge only comes from Google and have neither experience in Argentina or in any other part of the world.
Anbar.....Simon68, CarolaLSB and a few others are legit. When I go to Argentina.....the ones I encounter and the ones I know are nothing like these “displaced” Argentines. I am lucky that my house was never broken into. But everyday, you (well, I, at least) hear about how the guy from the other block was murder, the girl from around the corner was raped, the shop 2 blocks away was looted. And most of the people I know are experiencing the same.
Anyway, we could argue all day long about who is right and who is wrong. But, at the end of the day, you have to look at all the people protesting (whether they are 200,000, or 2,000,000) and pay attention to their claims. If a protest this big happened in any other country, the gov. will take notice and DO SOMETHING, not just disregard and ignore the people protesting.

What happened after her stunt at Harvard was shameful and I am embarrassed to have her as my President, especially after the Once tragedy and how her administration handled it. He has a scholarship (the only way most Argentinian can afford Harvard) and his family was investigated by AFIP a week after CFK was at Harvard. It's that type of persecution that most object to.
I think that Argentina is a rich country in the sense that we have many, many natural resources and land to take advantage of. Unfortunately, we have (well, we vote) the same type of gov. over and over again. If we can get it right on election day, we could be a great country.
CarolaLSB, I am sorry to hear of your tragedies. My wifes father was robbed at gun point 6 times in Recoleta. The last time he was beat with the handgun. He now carries a handgun for personal protection and he is a physician.

You all really have to stop the judicial reform and find a better way, like judiciary review and impeachment process for incompetent and corrupt judges. The mid term elections is the most important message to send to Kirchner in October and the rest of her cronies.
You like in Argentina....BK and Stevie does not and you can expect a dismissive rebuttal from them.

And I do not need to compare crime rates, because it's a moot point. Statistics are not useful when people live in fear.
And state-financed violence is alive and well, with La Campora, Vatayon Militante, and other associations like them.
Villas miserias are greater than ever and police officers won't go anywhere near them. Most of the petty crime, like the one I suffered, is committed by youngsters, who are not old enough to be given a handout or old enough to stand trial.
Anyway, it's pointless to argue with someone who does not even live here and does not see the day-to-day reality many Argentinians suffer.
And just to give you an example:
On Feb 18th of this year at around 6pm, I was standing in a line with many, many strangers near the Colon waiting for the bus. A gang of 5 youngsters beat and robbed an old, disabled lady who carried a purse and a nice watch and necklaces. Police were standing a mere block away and did nothing. People started yelling and screaming, but nobody chased them. Why? Because we live in fear, fear that someone is going to murder you, just to steal you your watch, fear that your house may be broken into, fear that you won't come home, fear that the police, who is supposed to protect you, does nothing and our judiciary is blind and deaf.
And just because someone is given a handout does not mean they are able to make meets end. In most cases, they are not. These handouts are given to just about anyone who is willing to show up and clap. Not to people who are in most need of them. Instead of giving handouts, they should focus in teaching people, give them a craft, something they can make a living of. But then, they would not have so many votes.
Sad thing about this it that it was the expected result. There was no logical reason to believe that CFK would be a good ruler of some sort, taking into account both hers and her husband's personal history and the way they acted in Santa Cruz Province. Many books described how they classified everyone: servant or enemy. But it is also terrifying to consider that opposing parties do not offer a viable alternative to Kircherism.

Crime in the 90s was lower. I grew up in the 90s, we played outside, we could walk or bike anywhere, and you were safer than today. Today, you see no children playing, or biking, or even walking alone here in Almirante Brown. Crime was never higher than it is now here in my municipe.
Anyway, you don't even live here and you are parroting stuff you read or was fed to you.
You cannot argue with a citizen who experiences it every single day. I cannot argue with someone in the US for eg. about Obama. I don't live there and have no idea how people are living, what you read in the news is not always true, especially if you are reading state-run newspapers, which you are most likely.
I don't know why you Brits are so eager for her to fall. You'll probably hate the next president just as much...

I think the reason most foreigners chose to come is because they can afford higher education here. Higher education is extremely cheap compared to most countries, especially with the currency as it is today.
There is a lot of tourism because of the euro-peso, or dollar-peso rate. It is cheap to come here, even if prices are high. Also, you don't need medical insure of any sort. You can just go to a public hospital and be admitted totally free of charge, which is something that some tourists value. It's usually quite expensive to get sick away from home.
Furthermore, Argentina has very beautiful landscapes, in the North, in Cuyo, in the South. We have ski resorts in some cities, vineyards in others, desert, glaciers, lakes. So, yeah, fortunately, tourism is quite good.
I can say that I have always enjoyed my visits. Thoguh I visit my wifes family, we do usually trek off somewhere for short periods of time. Though I can honestlky say that the buses and taxis need work.....lol Standing in a bus in Buenos Aires city is an excercise all by itself.

I do not wish a coup d' etat, like many accuses us non-supporters of wanting. I just wish that CFK did something to stop corruption, crime and inflation, along with improving education and health. I have not seen any real, long-lasting improvement during her 1st and 2nd (so far) terms as President. Most of the measures and policies she and her administration pass are like a band-aid to a bleeding artery. Social exclusion is bigger than ever.
And her propaganda apparatus is huge, with Futbol Para Todos, 678, La Campora, Vatayon Militante, America, Canal 9, Diario Registrado, Pagina/12 and such.
And what I hate the most is the fact that she and her adm. have managed to turn the people one against the other. They preach hate and disunion, and it's a shame.
You cannot understand it, unless you lived here. Whether you are pro or antiK, or just like or dislike her gov, you are hated for your opinion. There is no debate, people just hate you because you support this or that.

And I do not parrot what Clarin or La Nacion say. I wish they would criticize Macri more. I call it as I see it, and seen as I DO live in Argentina, whereas you don't, I think I am more capable than you to see what is going on in my own country.
Many like me don't criticize CFK for giving handouts, we criticize her gov. because is really corrupt, blind and deaf. It's a populist gov more concerned in gaining votes today by passing short-term (and short-sighted) policies than in building a stable economy, or educating people.
Many are outraged also because her cabinet is full with ill-prepared people who commit blunder after blunder. A minister cannot say that protesting citizens should shut the eff up and insert their pots in their behinds. Moreno said so live during an interview. Not heard about Moreno's outburst, which sounds passionate and vigorous though I'm surprised mercopress hasn't made a negative story out of it if true! But Timmerman's conduct is very far from a blunder, and that he is Jewish himself makes him the perfect minister to lead up this brave act of conflict resolution. Ever heard the phrase ”only Nixon could go to China”...

I really do feel she governs by hate and fear. They preach one thing, and do exactly the opposite.
I have never voted for someone that won lol, so I was never a supporter of CFK. I won't say who I voted for, but lets juts say I am not a Peronist. I actually did like Nestor K's govt. from 03 to 06. He passed good measures, but measures that were meant to be short-term and ended up in place for far too long.
I liked very few things about CFK's govt. The fact is that we Argentinian live in a fake economy (so to speak). It's part pesos, part US dollars. Inflation is very, very high and the govt. does not do anything to curve it. Public health and public education are in terrible state. In the Gran Buenos Aires, CFK and Scioli commit a HUGE blunder in 08 concerning the public hospitals that directly depend on the province (instead of being municipal). Supposedly they bought CAT scan machines for 10 hospital. They did not. They paraded one CAT scan machine from hospital to hospital and then, they took it back. We, the people who live in Almirante Brown, are very aware of this. Clarin did not report it. Neither did La Nacion. We know it because we saw it.
Another example of a blunder was when CFK said that only rich people get diabetes, because they can afford more food and they are couch-potatoes.
I do not think I will ever change my mind about CFK. I really do feel she will go down on the books as one of Argentina's worst Presidents.
I am absolutely and genuinely shocked at the deceit!!!

These hospitals looked like the real deal, but were actually completely hollow and only used for parades. The Argentinian government is nothing more than a propaganda outlet that steals taxpayer's money.

It's a shame that money was/is spent in propaganda and big inaguration acts instead of being spent in what's actually important.

I really hope the people of Argentina can continue to gather steam to have a positive effect on today's lower house vote and the midterms. No country is without some corruption, but Argentina seems to take government corruption to a new level. I wish more of the average Argentine citizens can come here and speak to the supporters of Kirchner that live everywhere BUT Argentina.

If the protestors really cared about having more security, they wouldn't adress their demand to c. f. k. only, they should adress the same demands to the different governors too. In the case of capital federal, the protestors should have asked their intendant mauricio macri for more security, because according to our constitution, public security is a responsability of the governors.
On the other hand, if they really cared about fighting against corruption, they wouldn't criticise the corruption cases that involve c. f. k's govt. only, they should criticise also the corruption cases that involve maurcio macri's govt. However, when i see that the critics are adresssed to c. f. k. only, then i realize that most them don't have any genuine concern about those issues, they are just making a hypocrite manipulation, in order to criticise a govt. which doesn't concide with their ideological postures.
In reference to the claim for an independence justice, if they really cared about it, they would manifest that justice must be independent not just from the govt., but from the corporations too, however none of them said absolutly anything in relation to the legal protection that the clarin group could get, thanks to it's entaills with the most corporative sectors of justice, in order to not to comply with the new broadcast law, sanctioned in 2009.
I wasn't born yesterday in order to believe that the protestors were concerned about the issues i mentioned, actually their manifestations are acts of desperation, with the purpose of demanding the weak oponent politic parties to form an ample politic party, in order to confront against national govt. in 2015.

They still voted against it, which is why the K revealed this dirty secret. This and the support of the Socialists to the K media law in 2009 (who actually voted for it) shows that there is no true opposition in Argentina. Too bad the people don´t realize it. The problem in Argentina is with the entire political elite, and it won´t be until all the current politicians die of old age that anything will get fixed. Even then, from all the Kirchnerist youth, I doubt the next generation will be any better than this one.

Unfortunately, the Congress is filled with inept and corrupt people who pass express bills on such important matters, while other bills of law have been freezed for years. I hope that the govt. will not be able to continue with this unconstitutional law, as under the Arg. law, the Constitution prevails over any law, and nothing can go against it.

@204 the votes from two thirds of Congress is required for a new Constitution. CFK doesn´t have those votes even with all her allies and they need a miracle to happen to win enough votes in October to get enough deputies and senators. CFK won´t get reelected, but she´ll look for someone from her own ranks who is inept enough to replace her. That is, if she doesn´t try anything funny. Who knows?

These two steps both takes 2/3s of each house to approve.
3-After the President signs it, the amendent is sent to the state legislative bodies (state are soverign bodies in the USA) to pass. 75% of the states must approve for the amendment to become ratified.
The believe is that a simple majority should not be a reasonable measure to pass an amendment.
