It wasn't us , it was the terrible Junta, but we will celebrate what they did none the less.
Couldn't even be arsed reviewing his on troops on foot, you would never see the Queen reviewing her troops 30 feet away in a vehicle with a body guard in between, mind you those bayonets are sharp and pointy. Pathetic!

What is the purpose of this speech? Surely the majority of intelligent Argentine citizens have priorities beyond the boring rhetoric of this malvinista nonsense?

The silent majority are those who bang their saucepans on a regular basis not those members of La Cámpora and other minority nationalist organisations such as Quebracho. The kircheneristas are digging their own graves.

Puricelli must have been in a different war in 1982. He said

“Our commitment is to continue training men and women so that they belong to the Armed Forces of our nation with the same interest, courage and heroism displayed by the men, women, military and civilians during the South Atlantic war without asking for explanations, only dedicated to honour the allegiance to the flag”.

Is this the same men and women that abandoned their positions on Mounts Harriet/Kent/Tumbledown and RAN back to Port Stanley where they “heroically” placed anti aircraft guns and missiles next to houses with Falklanders in so that The RAF wouldnt bomb them, using civilians as human shields, Heroic? NOT AT ALL. The same behaviour as Saddam Hussain.

A British soldier once said that given the defensive positions in the hills around Port Stanley 50 Royal Marines could have held off an invading force indefinately so why did the heroic argentinian armed forces run away?
After the sinking of the belgrano their navy also ran back to port and never came out again. Even the two destroyers escorting belgrano ran away instead of picking up survivors.... very very strange traits for heros. I believe it was one of these destroyers that heroically rolled over in port recently.

In fact the aregentinians murders/ invaders of 1982 have nothing to be proud of and nothing to comemorate. They were a defeated, mainly conscripted and poorly organised rabble. They had numerical supremecy, excellent equipment a short supply chain and the advantage of being land based in a south atlantic winter and still lost!!!
What a total embarrasment for the Argentinian Nation.

As a further insult to the defeated military, their head of state couldnt be bothered to turn up to this celebration(?) and review the troops herself.

The Argentinian philosophy regarding armed conflict ...
    WAR definition... Whinge And Run.

A number of argentine army officers were more of a threat to their own men than the british. Hence begging to keep pistols for self defence.
    The navy ran away .

I'll give you credit for effort Puricelli, but you are going to have to work a lot harder than that to knock Timerman off top spot in my list of amusing cretins. I'd like to see more failures at strategic and tactical policy making, more embarassment heaped on anybody associated with you, and definitely more examples of being intellectually incompetent of governance. Don't get me wrong, you are all doing extremely well in the latter category but the bar has been set particularly high by Mr “I want to leave”. 2013 is already a vintage year. Its going to be tough for you.

There's some interesting features to this. The first is that is usual, in this type of event, for the VIP to be driven past lines of suitably parked aircraft. Where are the aircraft? Now, I know that someone might say that they can see the tailfin of an aircraft in the background. Quite true. But look carefully at that tailfin. What aircraft is it and whose markings are on it? Thing is that “El Palomar Air Force base” is actually El Palomar Airport. It's a public/military airport. Handy for argies, eh? That way, if their “air force base” gets bombed or missiled, they can claim that the attacks were against a civilian target. Clever, eh? As it happens, El Palomar airport is home to the 1st Air Brigade. Two transport squadrons. One flies the C-130 Hercules and the other the Fokker F-28. The air force has 3 C-130s and 1 is a tanker. And it has 5 F-28s. At best, a 26-year old aircraft. A comparable aircraft would be a BAC One-Eleven. That's why there are no aircraft. Because they would only be able to show 8! Hard to compare to the RAF. 14 tankers and 50 transport aircraft, including 32 C130s.

Just a dying regime in its death throws trying to rally the troops with propaganda they want to hear but know is not true. The parallels with the 1982 Junta are just staggering & this new junta sure loves whipping people up into a frenzy but without a viable Air force, Army or Navy they are just pissing into the wind.

    @19 - Conqueror

You bring up a good point about the 'joint' military/civilian airport.

In reality, the 'joint' airfield is probably due to the fact that the Argentina military have been so starved of cash that they actually can't afford to run and maintain their own airfields, so have to 'piggy-back' on the civilian airfields.

However, the Argentine military and political class really need to read the Laws of Armed Conflict more carefully.

Any 'civilian' installation being used for the purpose of war become a 'legitimate' target under the Geneva Conventions. So the fact that it is a civilian airfield would become irrelevant in a time of war. It would be a legitimate target should Argentina ever be stupid enough to declare war on the UK.

Of course, the UK's weaponry is so sophisticated that we could probably take out the hangers were the military aircraft were being stored, without damaging the rest of the airport.

We would, of course, have to bomb the runway, denying access to both military and civilian aircraft, but that's what happens if you decide to go to war.

Regarding Puriceilli, however, he is just spouting the usual crap.

Every year that goes by weakens the already spurious claims on sovereignty that Argentina has and strengthens the Falklanders legitimate rights to freedom and self determination.

It's sad that Argentina will remain mired in a fictional past whilst ignoring the present and the future.

That's why it will always remain a 'never-was' country. It couldn't even make it to 'has-been' status.

At least 'has-beens' have actually achieved something, the 'never-was' have never achieved anything, and probably never will.

“Defence minister Arturo Puricelli said that Argentines “are not prepared to tolerate the usurpation” of the Malvinas Islands ‘for the rest of our lives’”

Even if you have everlasting life Putridjelly, you'll have to tolerate self-determination whether you like it or not.

  • mcarling

Even prior to the establishment of the right of self-determination, Argentina's claims were baseless because Argentina gave up all claims to the Falklands in an 1850 treaty with Britain. Even if Argentina hadn't given up their claims by treaty, they would have been lost by the absence of any protest between 1850 and 1883. From Argentina's first claim to the Falklands in 1829 to their renunciation of claims in 1850, their claims were very, very weak.

If the Falklands were to claim sovereignty over Patagonia, the claim would be invalid only for the lack of continuous (at least once a year) protest of the claims. By comparison, Argentina's claim over the Falklands is redundantly invalid.

Surely, you can only “reclaim” something that you have lost so either

    1) Sovereignty was never theirs in the first place (in which case it's a “claim”)

    2) Or that any claim they thought they had was somehow lost - probably back in 1850 with the Arana Southern Treaty and the lack of protest 90 years thereafter.

This is a bit of a Freudian slip on Putridjelly's part and explains why they are so shit scared of taking their “case” to the ICJ. “Reclaiming” is a bit of an admission that you don't actually have a claim.

Maybe Mr.Puriccelli should get a reality check after watching these videos. My local airport has been hosting the transports and helicopters and I often catch sight of the warships in the Clyde. It is interesting to note that the landscape in which the exercise is taking place is rather like the Falklands although a harsher terrain. Coincidence or prophetic ?

@30 José Malvinero - in the early nineteenth century, if you refer to the two British invasions of Buenos Aires, Argentina did not exist. Buenos Aires was a Spanish colonial city and Britain and Spain were at war.

In the late twentieth century Argentina illegally invaded the Falkland Islands, a possession of a friendly nation, and your troops were eventually repulsed some three months later “con los rabos entre las piernas” - ¡una derrota total!

So what is the point you are trying to make? ¡Sinverguenza!

I think you are better off continuing to train men and women for the military until they put bullets through kirchner's botox laden face.
How does one reclaim something they have no legal rights too(else they would take them to ICJ)? cannot control? do not govern? and does not possess? Proximity is not a claim or else Greenland would be Canada's as would Alaska.

#13 Anglotino- I understand what you are trying to say. I am not sure if you ever served in the armed forces, but orders are a basic concept of discipline in the military. With without, soldiers scatter at the first fire fight. Sometimes it's obvious and should be questioned.....My Lai, but typically it is not always so clear.

@21 Sorry to disagree but you should explore the various argie, and other latino, air bases. Public/military airports are the norm. No money?
@23 Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uti_possidetis Apply to 1982 Falklands War.
@30 Whoops, a bit ad hominem there, sonny. BUT, aaah, yes. The army. ”The main foreign influence during this period was, by and large, the prussian (and then German) doctrine. Partly because of that, during both World Wars most of the officers supported the Germans, more or less openly“. Kraut lovers. Also proponents of the ”Dirty War“. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uti_possidetis
And the navy. ”As the cost of maintaining a navy was too high, most of the Argentine naval forces were composed of privateers. Brown led the Argentine navy in further naval conflicts at the War with Brazil and the Anglo-French blockade of the Río de la Plata.
In the late 1800s, the Argentine Navy began modernizing itself.“
    Whoops, another history rewrite.
Notably, in 1982, one argie vessel was fired upon, and sunk. The rest of the argie navy ran.
Notably, in 1982, despite defensible positions that Royal Marines said they could have held ”forever“, the argie army ran. 11,313 prisoners.

Dany has already made it abundantly clear that he is willing to sacrifice at least 10,000 Argentines to the 'Malvina's' cause.

He's a tactical genius, don't you know? He told me so himself. Of course I'm still waiting for his answers as to how he's going to get the Argentine army to the Falklands considering what's left of their Navy is non-effective. And he has yet to answer how he's going to resupply theses 10,000 Argentine troops with food, ammunition and medical supplies. No can he say how he would evacuate the wounded.

In fact, his tactics appear to be as simply as pointing vaguely in the direction of the Falklands and shouting “GO!” at the sacrificial lambs...er...troops.

However, he is certainly wouldn't be among them as he is unwilling to sacrifice himself for the cause, as he is a coward.
