The secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, plans to finish his term as head of the organisation. In an interview with El Pais (Madrid), the Chilean socialist political veteran has said that he still has two more years as head of the OAS thus quelling rumours about his resignation.
Insulza took over as Secretary General in May 2005 and was re-elected in 2010. His tenure at the OAS has been complicated by the difficult balance between ALBA countries and the others, the demands by the United States to reform and revitalise the body, and criticism of his management. The Secretary-General hopes that his legacy is remembered for having ”strengthened hemispheric issues and for having prepared the organisation to face the challenges of today.”
This past year, the Secretary General has championed two projects he considers an example of such hemispheric policies, the Reform of the Inter-American System of Human Rights and the Report on the Drugs Situation in The Americas.

Disclaimer & comment rulesA lot of things , some very critical , has been said about this man . However , in the case of Paraguay , he was completely fair . After the change of Government he concluded , after consulting all parts , that the impeachment was legal and that the country should be allowed to prepare for elections with no outside interference . He also stopped efforts by many to boycott the nation .
