A pregnant 11-year-old Chilean girl who was allegedly raped by her stepfather should be granted all medical options, including the right to abort, rights group Amnesty International said on Thursday. The pregnancy of 'Belen,' as she is known has sparked an outcry in one of South America’s most conservative countries, where abortion is banned under all circumstances. Read full article

For “conservtive” read: “backwards”. If they're using religion, rather than logic or science based sense, these people should be collectively slapped.

I agree that the religión don´t has the right to command the lives of those that don´t recognize it as own.....
Issues like abortion, marriage separation, divorce, euthanase, etc., must be treated as state issues were religious thinking must be kept out because the legal system affect to the whole citiziens where a lot of them are not religious or they believes in other tan the majority religión of the country....
If the legal system isn´t on line with one or another beleive, just they must ask their follower to not use that law they don´t approve. So easy ......

Chile´s legal system must be improved changing the base of concepts from religious to racional in the sort time to be on line with the 21st century knowledge...

The President simply said that he supports the girl's personal decision to keep the baby. Abortion does not officially exist in Chile, but this case in an early stage of pregnancy is not a problem for the procedure to be preformed at any hospital.
The girl is described as being physically more developed than her age, intelligent and was not pressured . #1 & #2. You both are ignorant .

    @3 Chicureo

Which bit of “abortion is banned under all circumstances” have we misunderstood?

How does that align with your claim it can be (per)formed at any hospital?

And, are you saying this 11 YO is SO mature that she FULLY understands the difficulties facing her for the rest of her life and that of her child if it goes to term and is a live birth? Before you answer I take it you know this CHILD personally?

I am really interested to know what you think, or am I ignorant as well?

An 11 year old, is a child,

and certainly would not understand the baby doll effect.

its just my opinion but i think the step father should be inprison, the baby should be aborted, and the 11 year old child given all the help one can obtain from the state..

Leaving aside the moral and religious implications, the pregnancy is extremely physically risky in one so young. It is likely to cause irreparable damage to the 11 year old child.

Cheese! I thought it was bad in Ireland but this is Barbaric. The Step Father should be Castrated before being sent to Prison.

THIS IS PEDOPHILIA WITH PRESIDENTIAL APPROVAL.

#7 Aproving the existence of the baby is not aproving the act that generated it. Difference.

I am totally AGAINST abortion. Mother and baby are two different bodies, that is a simple, evident and obvious biological fact. Wanna cut your arm off? Do it, but abortion is violence against a human being in its purest form. Funfact: backwards does not mean wrong, sweetheart.

Disagree: An embryo cannot survive without feeding off the host. The host is entitled to sever this process if She considers it invasive.

Let's cut to the chase shall we?

Elaine got it spot on about her concern for the welfare of the child, for that is what she is, a CHILD.

I had thought that Chile, so ahead of the rest of the nutters in SA would be in a similar position with the rights of women to decide for themselves what happens to their bodies.

It seems I was very badly mistaken with the doctrine of the demonic RCC holding everybody to ransom in Chile as it tries to do throughout the world.

Dear oh dear, putting the welfare of your women in charge of a bunch of male perverts and child molesters, I wonder what your women think of this: has anybody asked them in a FEMALE ONLY referendum? I bet not.

How does Chile think it can defend it’s NO abortion stance when things happen like this?

No sensible society is going to believe that Chile should be ‘in’ with them when it treats its women like this. Talk about the dark ages.

There have always been unwanted babies, regardless of the circumstances of their conception - Saddam Hussein & Ted Bundy being the most prominent that come to mind - and there have always been abortions regardless of their legal status or the associated penalties. It makes sense that mothers be given options and that those options include expert medical care and legal safeguards.

But change only occurs as rapidly as a society can absorb the implications. I think what Chicureo was suggesting, if I may be so bold, is that Doctors are able to do, in these circumstances, what Dr's frequently do in western countries with respect to euthanasia. Sometimes it is possible to do what common sense suggests is the right thing without involving the authorities or even being particularly secretive about it.

I am confident that Chile will do the right thing for Chileans, whatever that is, whenever they have decided what that is.

“Disagree: An embryo cannot survive without feeding off the host. The host is entitled to sever this process if She considers it invasive.”
Why the fact that an embryo cannot survive without the mother gives her the right to kill it? It's a human life.

I take it you are male?

And I suppose a devout RC?

And your woman has never been raped and ended up pregnant?

Lucky you in these circumstance that an 11 YO CHILD finds herself in.

Because that embryo was not planted there on her own free will and choice. Someone should not be force to maintain the life of another just because of the simple premise that it is life. If that we the case there would be no poverty because everyone that is against abortion on that premise would be feeding the poor for the simple fact that they are life and human. You think humanity is special? Animals reproduce right down to viruses. You think humanity is special.......take a good look in this world and see what man does to one another. See what islamic men to to islamic women for going to school....they acid acid tossed in they faces. Islamic women that have sex before marriage are murdered for shaming their family. So unless you you take care of your fellow man, drop the bullshit that it is life and a mother does not have the right to kill it. Forcing her to create life and foster that embryo is just as bad as killing it. Neither is a good choice but the 11 year old will be the ultimate loser.
