Speaking for a Brazilian business association in Sao Paulo, Rubén Barbosa accused the government of Argentina of dealing a ‘mortal blow’ to Mercosur, the regional grouping that was originally focused on economic integration and has since become a political forum for the region’s leaders as was again evident during the last summit in Montevideo. This is very good news. Mercosur is dead! Of course, certain “leaders” will continue to posture for a while. Brazil has dug itself a hole with its ill-considered, illegal and stupid actions over Paraguay. On the same issue, Uruguay was weak. And argieland was down at its usual level of pretension and incompetence. Please note EU, you have made it a condition of renewed talks that Paraguay is properly involved. So scratch that. Ditch the useless bunch. Try the Pacific Alliance. But you might have to stick to trade!

    Schneewittchen: A Fairy tale.

Había una vez the Jealous Queen, aka Evil Witch and Dopey were at it again. She with her poisoned apple mouth and he... well as the yapping Canciller.

@3 Poor little Twinky. Spray comments around hoping something will strike. News for you, asshole. Missed! Now let''s have some collective action. All get together, over argieland, and defecate. Also find location of Twinky and, defecate again. Having defectated, don't forget to urinate.

Now let's look at Twinky. At one time he seemed quite intelligent. Then, over time, as his “operators” changed, “he” degenerated. Now “he” couldn't make a “point” if it was shoved up his arse.

Twinky is a pointless irrelevancy. Can't see any point in commenting except to point out idiocy.

Why are people happy to see the death of mercosur?

With regards the Falklands, Argentina has the ear of Latin countries: if mercosur has a stunting effect on any of these countries then long may it continue. And if the idea of some sort of regional leftist unity make Venezuela haemorrhage its oil wealth quicker, the hooray to that as well.

Good speech . Let us not forget that the group he represents is very powerful . It is said that they were the ones who convinced Rousseff not to follow Kirchner' s idea of closing the Paraguayan borders in June 2012 . The idea being to starve the country into submission .

    Yapper #10

You high light another Grim (Reaper) story.

Your curious joy at this Argentine ‘death blow’ trait really does give a ring of truth to ChrisR #8 The Dark Country.

Mores the point TDC regime should’t complain when quietus tariffs are placed on its exports.

    Tick tock

You know, really could not stand Bush, but frankly Obama has proven to be far worse. Bush was ignorant, but Obama is arrogant and misinformed much more. Lagos was wise not to clap nor show approval.

....to be followed over time by CELAC, ALBA and any number of other largely irrelevant talk shops for politicians needing to pat each other on the back. The Mercosur ideal had great potential, but it takes a good deal more work, commitment and sacrifice than its members were prepared to give.

Looking back in history customs and free trade associations work quite well until the idea of political union supervenes the original concept and then they have always collapsed unless enforced by brute force as in the development of the Zollverien in Germany later enforced politically by Bismark. As for the modern EU the day that Germany pulls the plug it is finished.
Whatever politicians may aspire to there is an atavistic groundswell of national opinion which does not wish to surrender thier hard won independence to some distant political body over which they have minimal control
So I say yes to free trade and free movement of labour, people and technology but a definite NO to schemes for political union and a common currency
