Brazil wants to change the way Mercosur negotiates trade agreements with the European Union, EU, so as to definitively advance with the ongoing discussions that were started in 1995, but still have to see concrete results, according to Brazilian official trade and diplomatic sources. Disclaimer & comment rulesI've got a feeling we may see the end of Mercosur in the next few years - at least as a trading block.
Jul 25th, 2013 - 09:39 am - Link - Report abuse 0It will probably just end up as a political talking shop where they can unite to rant about sovereignty and dignity whenever they feel the need.
What does Brazil gain from Mercosur that it couldn't gain through other mechanisms?
Jul 25th, 2013 - 11:39 am - Link - Report abuse 0As the largest economy in the Americas outside of America, why has it saddled itself with economies and markets that are so small and shallow?
'Under Mercosur charter all countries must act on consensus and are banned from unilaterally establishing trade accords with third countries.'
Jul 25th, 2013 - 12:15 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Sorry, but I seem to have missed this constraint in operation.
All I seem to have seen is unilateral trade accords with third countries.
Have been predicting this for some time - Brazil is fed up with Argentine trade practices and will ultimately go it alone. And Mercosur will become another irrelevance.

#6 Wrong! Dislike of certain political ideologies of certain political Argentine leaders is where posters here are at I would say. Kirchner policies are not sustainable and affect others in Mercosur. I live in Brazil and any Brazilian business person will tell you the woman running Argentina is bad news. She is as mad as a meataxe. Wake up!!! However I do think Brazil politicians need a rocket up their backsides to actually do something that will benefit their population for their long term benefit.
Jul 25th, 2013 - 03:27 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I seem to have missed something here. Isn't mercosur the foremost organisation bringing together latam countries in an irresistable trade bloc? So why is it so desperate for an agreement with the hated EU? Here are some impediments to mercosur. Protectionism, argieland, politics, argieland, dishonesty, argieland, corruption, argieland, criminality, argieland, mendacity, argieland. Just can't seem to find a mechanism that will force argieland to comply with agreements, treaties etc. Shouldn't there be an agreement that, when argieland fails to comply, as it will, it can be bombed and missiled into oblivion. Also that an members of the government can be shot on sight. Or tortured until they expire. I sort of like the idea of a video where CFK is forced to use all three orifices to service the entire argie armed forces. And then all members of the British armed forces that can stomach it. I'm in favour of having timerboy being staked out and having his ballsack stretched to Tel Aviv. Let's be inventive. Putridjelli as a spitroast. Anibal under an elephant.

Well, Argentina tried to steal another people's land and caused a lot of unneccesary and tragic loss of life. And if that wasn't terrible enough, what does Argentina do after that unneccesary war?:
Continues to try to steal that same people's land.
That will tend to create a legitimately unfavorable impression, which is not racism.
Argentines aren't racist towards gringos, right? Seems to me it is the gringo hating racists crying racism!. As well, you are unhappy because you think Brazil is unfair because they probably won't put up much more with Argentina being unfair.
#6 What is remarkable is your constant whining. I think you should change your users name to Tinitus. Your statements are often ludicrous, partly because you have never done or achieved anything and patently never been anywhere than the dump you call home. Please grow up or shut up

Jul 25th, 2013 - 09:20 pm - Link - Report abuse 0And your comments are very mature for a 12 year old...
What have you achieved that makes you look down on people?
I've met quite a lot of people out there, and I can tell you this, the ones to look down on others with your superior attitude are most often the most miserable ones. The reason for their behaviour is most usually themselves failing to achieve anything in life, thus seeking consolidation in even less successful beings.
Don't mistake a superiorety complex for a inferiority one.
But grow up you will, regardless if you want it or not, and the only way to make you shut up, is to make you Watch history unfold itself.
Enjoy.
9 Conqeror . You ask why the urgency to negotiate with EU . It could be that the possibility that the EU and US will reach a trade deal has concentrated minds !
