The Falkland Islands government is reviewing a tax return submitted by one of the oil companies currently operating off-shore the Islands and is confident a mutually acceptable outcome can be reached. Read full article
@1 Strange. Inverted commas usually imply a quote. But, if it isn't a quote from the current article, it's usual to attribute the source. So you've made it up. Just like CFK makes things up. The British are militarising the South Atlantic. Don't mention the 20 Mirage jet fighters we're getting from Spain. If we can persuade them to hand them over for free because we don't have any money. The British are militarising the South Atlantic with their nuclear submarines! Are you sure they aren't U.S. nuclear submarines? The British are militarising the South Atlantic. And? The South Atlantic doesn't belong to argieland or any other latam state. Huge swathes of the South Atlantic are international waters. Bits of it even belong to various African countries. But we get the idea. Try to force Britain to remove its forces on the Falkland Islands, then invade. It's not going to work. Imagine. Nuclear submarine leaves Britain and sails NORTH. After navigating the polar icecap, it sails SOUTH. And reaches the Falkland Islands from the Southern Ocean. Clever, eh? I wonder if it's occurred to anyone in the argie government that a British ballistic missile submarine doesn't need to sail to the South Atlantic. It could fire a ballistic missile from 7,000 miles away.
Now get out your crayons and abacus and see whether you can work it out!
@1 Marcos
If INDEC was supplied with an abacus and crayons they might have a chance of getting their figures right-that's if Argentina can afford the abacus and crayons.
@9
The FALKLANDERS will defer the taxes for a while as they know that the windfall will come in the near future. They may collect some as they will need money for the Oil infrastructure to be put in place.
Excellent article from The Guardian. (Again)
Oil production plans put back. ( just another couple of years ;-)
But, as Turnip at (10) says........: NO ONE READS THE GUARDIAN.
NO ONE ......................... except some 30 million educated readers.....:
#14 Marcos - I'll repeat my question, but I know you're too much of a coward to answer it:
The only way the Falklands will ever be transferred to Argentina is (a) at the demand of the inhabitants, (b) in response to a ruling by the ICJ or (c) by force.
(a) Argentina's past and continued belligerence towards the islanders make this very unlikely.
(b) Argentina has not taken their demands to ICJ. They know full well they would not succeed.
(c) In comparison to the UK Argentina has no armed forces except the possibility of a human wave attack.
One can only conclude that the Argentine government doesn't actually want the Falklands but simply wants attention (or to distract attention from real problems). Do you disagree with this assessment?
It is you Marcos that are wrong about so much. So blinded by pathetic hatred and a desire to destroy the lives of hundreds of people who have never done anything to you. You should be ashamed.
FYI: Now that the Times is behind a paywall and the Daily Telegraph only lets you see so many stories a month then that leaves the Guardian as the only free on-line broadsheet. It retains a few first rate journos and commentators of the old school (Michael White, Rawnsley, Hoggard) but the Toynbees & Jenkins of this world are not taken that seriously beyond their Islington dinner parties & student union meetings. While I'm glad to live in a country where a mainstream paper like the Guardian is free to print what it likes about the government, that doesn't change the fact that it can be insufferably pretentious and self-obsessed. Nothing that Simon Jenkins or Richard Gott writes should give you hope that a future UK government will abondon the FIs - they won't. The Guardian just likes to trade on the fact that they will publish unpopular minority opinions that no-one else will.
Marcos, Think (& various sock puppets), the Guardians circulation is about 0.25% of the UK. So, it has no influence. Aww, isn't it nice to see the usual trolls try to distract from this story.
However, as usual they're doing a p!ss poor job, and their impotent jealousy is showing through.
They can see the future of the Falkland Islands: rich prosperous and major player that most countries in South America will be eager to do business with.
And they can see the future of Argentina: poor, in debt, badly led, with trading disputes with most countries in South America (if not the world).
But never mind, all your corrupt government needs to do is wave the 'Malvina's Myth' and everything will be okay...except for the economy, the infrastructure, education, health and security. But what are these things when compared to the glorious Forth Reich's new dream...
What is with these delusions of grandeur the British society always seems to suffer from? 3000 people no matter WHAT THEY DO CAN NEVER BE MAJOR PLAYERS IN ANYTHING!!!

Marcos & Think , I understand that your English speech and comprehension is not so good. My observation was gathered in various trips to RGland in recent years working on aids projects to help with the desperate plight of the Cartoneros. Read it (carefully) again....
This is paid for by on-line advertising panels for false teeth, boot polish and in Argentinas case Botox, breast implants and viagra. Is that sufficient explanation for you? Boot polish is useful stuff and most older Argentineanns sport falsies, as you know you can purchase second hand ones in most markets!
How many major oil companies are exploring for shale gas in Patagonia ( hope the indigieous population gets a fair share ) Just heard of one Chevron, but time will tell if they decide to carry on ( VALE ring a bell anyone )
Compared to Argentina they are already major players.
And yes, I can see them becoming major players in the South American economy (though not Argentina's - as you don't need ANYBODY! WAH! WAH!).
It's really amusing to see you trolls DESPERATELY trying to convince everyone that this is somehow a fail for the Falkland Islands, when it is, in fact, a win-win situation for them.
Let's see. Lots and lots of dollars divided between 3,000 people, makes a lot of very rich people. The same amount of dollars divided between 40 million people...well not 40 million as the thieves that you have in government will stuff in their off-shore accounts, makes Argentina the BIGGEST LOSER!
More than likely the FALKLAND Government will defer payment or charge less, they will not be cutting off their nose to spite their face. They will certainly need enough money to prepare the infrastructure, ( whisper has it that they have asked Argentina to tender for some contracts ) :-)) Only joking, they do not have the expertise. LOL:-))
@37 The Truth PaTroll What is with these delusions of grandeur the British society always seems to suffer from? 3000 people no matter WHAT THEY DO CAN NEVER BE MAJOR PLAYERS IN ANYTHING!!!
It's just simple head count arithmetic. But keep denying the laws of gravity, what a bunch of senile morons
All I can say to that is.... 3000 people are doing a pretty good job keeping Argentina in it's place, and 1 is keeping you in your place... moron!
Problem is it's not 3000 people keeping Argentina in it's place, it's 65 million plus 700 million in NATO.
And that's good as I don't want your people to be ruled by a government you do not wish or choose.
However, my point stands whether you like it or not: Luxembourg is filthy rich yet they are not major players in the world. Not because they are failures, but due to simple population weight.
You post is meaningless, as there are not 700 million, or 65 million people keeping Argentina in it's place.
It's a few hundred. They're called the Argentine government. They keep YOU in your place, Tobias. They steal your money, your pensions and your future, but you are so stupid that all you can do is stand by and applaud them for doing it, whilst at the same time believing their lies that it is the fault of them 'nasty' foreigners.
That is why Argentina will never be a major player despite it's size. That is why Argentina will never be a world power.
You continuously shoot yourselves in the foot so why should the rest of the world bother with you? It's far cheaper to sit back, with your feet up, and watch as Argentina commits economic suicide AGAIN.
People, I know the level of conversation between individuals on here has never been fluid and in depth (thanks Marcos, Jose, Think, Malen, etc.) but have we really stooped to the depth of arguing whether the Guardian is a good newspaper? Are the Argentines really that out of touch with the real world? The Guardian is not really considered a good paper in the UK.
There are no good papers in the UK (or press). The British press is widely regarded as one of the most laughably discredited, sensationalist media on Earth.
@52
I suppose Argentina has good newspapers, Chrissie wants to close them down, if they are critical of her decisions it is an attack on the state, what a load of bull.
Strikes me that the FIG looks greedy, taxing far too much, and discussing a taxpayer's affairs in public too. I would hope that they revise any tax demand downwards. Governments only waste money and make bad choices.
#56 Mr ED - no-one has been taxed yet, so no-one could have been taxed too much.
FIG hasn't discussed it in public. The oil company made it public. FIG has described the process they followed, but not the details of amounts or taxpayers.
As for looking greedy, who does the oil belong to? Don't let the facts get in the way of a story!
@ 57 'to tax' and 'to collect' are different, the article refers to 'a major tax bill from the Falklands government'. That is to tax.
The proper stance for the FIG would be not to comment.
Who does the oil belong to? Well if it really belongs to the government, why aren't they drilling it out? Because they'd make a mess of it. The FIG, like all governments, simply lays claim to assets because they can.
Does it look greedy? Well, it looks greedy at the moment, and if it puts off current and future investors, the losers will be the Islanders, however, I would hope that if they gently pluck feathers of the goose, rather than wring its neck (like a certain distant neighbour would) then there might be some cause for optimism.
I doubt that that the UK will long sit back and ignore an opportunity to impose its own taxes on the oil or the FIG to recoup the costs of defending the Islands.

.....its bad enough killing the goose that lays the golden egg
Aug 25th, 2013 - 01:20 pm - Link - Report abuse 0.......but even worse to kill it before it's laid any golden eggs!
#39 Coward.
Aug 25th, 2013 - 01:31 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Marcos & Think , I understand that your English speech and comprehension is not so good. My observation was gathered in various trips to RGland in recent years working on aids projects to help with the desperate plight of the Cartoneros. Read it (carefully) again....
Aug 25th, 2013 - 02:33 pm - Link - Report abuse 0 This is paid for by on-line advertising panels for false teeth, boot polish and in Argentinas case Botox, breast implants and viagra.

Aug 25th, 2013 - 05:01 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Compared to Argentina they are already major players.
Congratulations at winning something...LOL
Wow! $30000 per head, and that's just a start! And, no corrupt politicians to cream it off!
Aug 25th, 2013 - 05:16 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The FI are rocking...
LOL:-))
Aug 25th, 2013 - 08:31 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@37 The Truth PaTroll What is with these delusions of grandeur the British society always seems to suffer from? 3000 people no matter WHAT THEY DO CAN NEVER BE MAJOR PLAYERS IN ANYTHING!!!
Aug 25th, 2013 - 09:23 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It's just simple head count arithmetic.
Aug 25th, 2013 - 10:05 pm - Link - Report abuse 0And that's good as I don't want your people to be ruled by a government you do not wish or choose.
However, my point stands whether you like it or not: Luxembourg is filthy rich yet they are not major players in the world. Not because they are failures, but due to simple population weight.
@48 Tobias
Aug 26th, 2013 - 05:26 am - Link - Report abuse 0Ahh, back to the old victim mentality.

Aug 26th, 2013 - 06:14 am - Link - Report abuse 0Haha perfect!
Aug 26th, 2013 - 07:34 am - Link - Report abuse 0There are no good papers in the UK (or press). The British press is widely regarded as one of the most laughably discredited, sensationalist media on Earth.
Aug 26th, 2013 - 10:35 am - Link - Report abuse 0@52:
Aug 26th, 2013 - 11:20 am - Link - Report abuse 0So why bother quoting any of the UK papers (including the Guardian) then?
@52
Aug 26th, 2013 - 01:00 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I suppose Argentina has good newspapers, Chrissie wants to close them down, if they are critical of her decisions it is an attack on the state, what a load of bull.
The Guardian could always operate in Argentina as it seems to be so popular there.
Aug 26th, 2013 - 04:43 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Hope it accepts Pesos.
Strikes me that the FIG looks greedy, taxing far too much, and discussing a taxpayer's affairs in public too. I would hope that they revise any tax demand downwards. Governments only waste money and make bad choices.
Aug 27th, 2013 - 02:32 am - Link - Report abuse 0#56 Mr ED - no-one has been taxed yet, so no-one could have been taxed too much.
Aug 29th, 2013 - 07:06 am - Link - Report abuse 0FIG hasn't discussed it in public.
Aug 29th, 2013 - 09:28 am - Link - Report abuse 0The proper stance for the FIG would be not to comment.
Well, I think the oil belongs to the Falklands people, not FIG, not oil companies.
Aug 29th, 2013 - 11:49 am - Link - Report abuse 0The FIG role is, amongst other things, to tax income and profits, such as those made by Rockhopper. Strange that no-one in Rockhopper saw this coming.
