Disclaimer & comment rules- while a quarter of UK respondents backed Gibraltar’s right to self determination
Sep 02nd, 2013 - 12:40 pm - Link - Report abuse 0“An overwhelming majority (75%) were in favour of the Gibraltarians being able to determine their future,” Noya said.”
So which is it......75% or 25%
Doesn't take much common sense to realize they were separate questions asked.

Sep 02nd, 2013 - 01:42 pm - Link - Report abuse 0So you are saying the Gibraltar’s right to self determination is different from.....
”Gibraltarians being able to determine their future?
I would need to see the question!
Perhaps just closing the border gates for maintenence,
Sep 02nd, 2013 - 02:05 pm - Link - Report abuse 0and see what happens next,?
Ah! The question was.......”What is your preferred status for Gibraltar?
Sep 02nd, 2013 - 02:16 pm - Link - Report abuse 048.4........Current status (British sovereignty)
9.3..........Spanish sovereignty
16.7......Joint UK-Spanish sovereignty
25.7......Gibraltarian self-determination
“Even so, an alarming 45% of them (the Spanish) said they would favour closing the frontier or closing Spanish airspace to flights to or from Gibraltar.”

I hope they keep going until Spain falls back to its infighting past and they disappear up their own culo.
NAH!! Spain should reap the profits from Gibraltar......
Sep 02nd, 2013 - 03:08 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The UK governments position on Gibraltar's sovereign sea (and it looks as if the Spanish are on a hiding to nothing):

Another way of looking at the poll is that 52% of British people ie.......most....voted for something other than British Sovereignty!
Sep 02nd, 2013 - 04:12 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I'm surprised they didn't go with the headline.......
............Majority Of British Don't Want British Sovereignty For Gibraltar........
@ 9 Think
Sep 02nd, 2013 - 04:34 pm - Link - Report abuse 0That's poor even for you. Another 26% support self-determination i.e. British Sovereignty since the Gibraltarians have made clear their view. Only 9% wanted Spanish sole sovereignty - if that makes a difference.
Anyway, the point about self-determination is that it ultimately doesn't matter what us Brits or the Spanish think. That's what decolonisation means.

Tell that to the some TEN THOUSAND Spanish workers who enter Gibraltar each day, to earn their salaries.
I was in Gibraltar during Franco’s siege. Then, the Spanish workers lost their livelihoods –some emigrated to Oz– and were replaced by Moroccans.
Re: et cetera.
This poll is probably just another opportunist, sensationalist media exercise in ‘inconsequential hype’. The old trick, whip up a sense of artificial outrage in the chattering classes, sell more advertising and make a name for oneself as a journalist. And remember to employ a good psychologist, ‘cos THE ANSWERS YOU GET DEPEND ON THE QUESTIONS YOU ASK!
For an intimate view on what’s happening regarding Gib., have a look at this English language report from the excellent, objective, German state owned broadcaster Deutsche Welle:

Cheers!

Sep 03rd, 2013 - 12:26 pm - Link - Report abuse 0If Spain took over Gibraltar it's economy would collapse- like Spain's has.
So the profits would be raped rather than reaped.
Except, Catalonia is the best performing region, and many there aren't too keen on remaining Spanish, and propping up the Spanish economy (such as it is).
