Sep 26th, 2013 - 12:41 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Bit of a waste of time. At what point in recent time has Uruguay engaged in diplomacy? It just does as it's told. Still, eventually Uruguay may get someone better than Pepe la Puke. He gets his gut because of gravity. He's on his hands and knees a lot. Will these two young ladies herald a thrust toward proper diplomacy. The same sort that ended with the destruction of the nazi Graf Spee. That was when Uruguay was a moral country with proper values.
Sep 26th, 2013 - 12:53 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@3 Conq re Graf Spee I dont think Uruguayan diplomacy had much to do with that. It was the superb management of the crisis and diplomatic brilliance of the British Minister Millington Drake that brought the engagement to a successful conclusion. I would also like to break a lance for the German captain Hans Langsdorf. He could have shelled Montevideo to rubble but he did not. A fine man who acted in the best naval tradition.

Sep 26th, 2013 - 04:04 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Some joker probably thought he HAD shelled parts of MVD! :o)
But I agree wholeheartedly.
Chris Have you got a reference on that? I would be interested as I have read quite extensivly on that action and on Langsdorfs background and character but never came across that

Excellent lecture and answered every question with references straight from his laptop that was connected to the projector.
Can't remember his name though, sorry.

Sep 26th, 2013 - 08:47 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Poppycock....Langsdorf was no hero he was a coward, he didn't dare face two Cruisers with his mighty pocket battleship!
He was great at sinking merchant ships
He should have come out with guns blazing whatever the odds of success were.
Who would rather scuttle their ship without a fight... then run off to BA?
He ended his disgrace the cowards way out instead of facing the music.
In a nutshell, one battle with ships capable of fighting back, lost a few men and it was enough!
Apart from Room101 why can't you all just say congratulations? Congratulations Laura and good luck for your future.
Sep 26th, 2013 - 09:01 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Yes well done Laura....and so lucky going to Oxford, great place for developing connections. It always becomes a case of not what you know ...but who you know!
Sep 26th, 2013 - 10:11 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@8 I resent that. langsdorf was no coward. Yes he made an error of judgement in not fighting and sinking the British and New Zealand warships. I think you should read up on the intelligence he received put about by British disinformation. He thought if he came out he would have to face not only the Cumberland but also the battleship Rodney
