Petrobras CEO Maria das Gracas Foster described as ‘simply exceptional’ the latest discovery of hydrocarbons off the coast of the north-eastern state of Sergipe on the Atlantic but declined to give further details of the prospect. Even when the Brazilian administration has abstained from making any announcement the Sergipe government has said “it is the largest oil discovery in the world this year”. Read full article

Now we know why Brazil is looking to drop Mercosur in favour of the EU......they will be looking for investment & expertise from the European Oil giants like Shell, BP & Total to develop Sergipe
Oct 09th, 2013 - 12:32 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Obviously Argentina, Uruguay & especially Venezuela with it's corrupt oil industry cannot fill that need.....money trumps politics any day!!!
I'm sorry to tell you, but Petrobras is technologically far superior.

Oct 09th, 2013 - 03:23 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@1 Aracaju - Sergipe is indeed a very beautiful city. 2 of my univerisity (Dutch and Norwegian) naturalized Brazilian friends live there with wife and kids and that city has a suprising high quality of life. If this is correct what Petrobras will anounce, it will make it only better and will benefit another booming state alagoas..(amazing beautiful beaches there not yet so known by foreigners)

Oct 09th, 2013 - 03:28 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I know the Sergipe oil basin well;
also I feel that the EU and Norwegian oil-winning industry is at least as skilled in the extraction of marine oil deposits as is Petrobras.
Whilst Petrobras is learning the technologies well as the years go by, the European oil industry is many years ahead in extractive technologies.
But doesn't all oil in the South Atlantic belong to Argentina?

Oct 09th, 2013 - 08:54 pm - Link - Report abuse 0FPSO are typically manufactures by two industries:
1) Heavy steel fabrication for the confirmed design;
2) The control and stability technology used to make the whole device work.
Brazil will be poor at no. 2 but very good at no. 1 (shipbuilding). The design is usually a contractor’s responsibility by fulfilling both participants needs.
Control gear: http://www.energy.siemens.com/hq/en/industries-utilities/oil-gas/applications/offshore-production.htm
This company already has the compressor trains contract for Petrobras: there is also a PDF about them on this link.
So, you see, the concept is well understood and used all over the world for oil production platforms, the only thing special about them is the exact number of flow points for oil / gas / other fluids (or semi-fluids like clay/soap/chemical mixes).
Never think that Brazil is the leader in oil field technology. If that ever becomes the case then they have more trouble than enough coming their way. The clever companies ALWAYS use tried and tested technology, it’s difficult enough to avoid disasters in what Petrobras are doing without going looking for them.
There is no shame in this.
