Well, why should he use South America to press the case for this little rock?

With the advanced structures of the European Union and the International Court of Justice to call on, why go to the Americas?

The fact that Spain feels it has a need to speak on the fallacious Argentine claim to the Falklands and Argentina feels it has a need to speak on the fallacious Spanish claim to Gibraltar just goes to show that both countries claims are of an anachronistic colonial nature. What should Spain and Argentina work together to expand each other's borders at the expense of their neighbours? It goes back to their Imperial/colonial links.

The Spanish conquistadors confirmed Gibraltar as British in the treaty of Versailles, for which we ceded Florida and Minorca, if they want to go back on the deal, do we get them back?

In truth Spain is ruined (that's the real reason for all this, to distract the hapless Spanish) give them Gibraltar and they will put it into the third world along with the rest of Spain.

“the traditional communiqué on Argentina’s sovereignty claim over the Falklands”

You have to laugh that this communique is now TRADITIONAL. They all know it's coming, they all say it and the they all promptly forget it.

“Besides they are the only two cases in which the UN has not recognized the applicability of the peoples’ right to self determination”

It's been almost a year and I'm still waiting for someone to show me where the UN actually said this.

I doubt they've said self determination doesn't apply. I imagine they simply haven't explicitly said that it does which Spain and Argentina have twisted to claim that it doesn't.

All the UN ever does is urge parties to discuss the matter peacefully - its stock response to almost everything

So Spain feels it has reached a limit, that’s interesting.

“the only two cases in which the UN has not recognized the applicability of the peoples’ right to self determination”

I’m not sure who is worse, the people who make up this sort of shit, or the people who believe it.

    8 Idlehands
In this case the UN has explicitly said all the territories on the list do have the right to self-determination.

Ban-Ki Moon has confirmed this on many occasions now, including the fact that “all”, includes The Falklands and Gib.

@5 “Cornered” by what? A couple of fourth-rate states and a third-rate continent? Neither argieland nor Spain are credible “threats”. They are just annoyances. The Falkland Islands have already beaten argieland. Gibraltar is well on its way to beating Spain. Possibly for the first time, Gibraltar's Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, told the U.N.'s Fourth Committee how it really is. He started by telling the Fourth Committee that it was now its duty to consider Gibraltar's 2006 Constitution and either agree that it fulfills the requirements for a full measure of self-government or tell Gibraltar where and how it is inadequate. He then went on to outline Spain's attempted bullying. The excessive queues at the frontier that Spain has admitted are attempts to choke Gibraltar's economy and force Gibraltar to negotiate sovereignty. The illegal incursions into British Gibraltar Territorial Waters by Spanish state, and other, vessels. Shots being fired by a Guardia Civil gangster at a Gibraltar citizen in BGTW. The incitements to racial hatred by the Spanish government and media. Arson committed on Gibraltar vehicles by Spaniards in Spain. and this was followed by hasty and plaintive complaints by Spain. Although every single accusation can be proved by photographic and/or video evidence. Keep going, Gibraltar, you have them bang to rights.
@6 You're a little late. Why do you think everyone refers to the Treaty of Utrecht 1713?
@7 Of course it's long past time that argieland and Spain gave up these ridiculous “claims”. But, politically, they can't. Too useful when argieland and Spain are in the shit. Which is most of the time. Also past time Britain followed Picardo's example. A Security Council resolution censuring both argieland and Spain for their breaches of the UN Charter and aggressive actions. Perhaps the Falklands and Gibraltar should also tell the UN that, in view of its bias, its jurisdiction is no longer recognised!

    I totally agree,
The UN needs to inform where it stands,
And if it cant enforce its rules on Spain and Argentina, for their breaches of the UN Charter then it is indeed a waste of time,

Spain are emasculated. The best forum is the EU, but at the moment the UK is a major financial contributor-going to the Americas forum is a little bit out of the way......

”25% of Spain's tourists are Brits-most of their tomatoes got to.....UK, Britain can support the Catalonian bid for a referendum and much more-but Span at least have the sense to gag themselves before it is too late.

I doubt the Americas will bail Spain out-provide 25% of their tourists and buy all their tomatoes.

If FIG say Spain can't fish down there-that's another few 100 (1000s?) of Spanish jobs up the swanny-but the crowning howls of laughter will be if Argentina 'promises' military help for Spain against Gibraltar.

And Gibraltar have offered to go to the ICJ.

@ 13 Yeah, Spain, go to the ICJ where the UK is one of the permanent members with veto power haha

14 Gonzo22 - you are a bit like old Marcos at facts-befuddled! UK is a permanent member and has a veto power on the UN Security Council in New York.
The Int. Court of Justice is DIFFERENT and sits in a different Country and NONE of the judges has the right of veto individually.

DannyB-5 How cornered?- Spain has said it will NOT ask for support over Gibraltar! Spain is a bit more grown up that Argentina! And the group meeting is just that - a group - no international power or enforcement - they just issue a series of fanciful wishes.

@ 15 Read about what the 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council, that are the same 5 permanent members of the ICJ, can do, and how the decisions of the ICJ can affect the interests of the 5 permanent members and what the 5 permanent members can do about it. Not that you will read, but here's the link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Court_of_Justice

Gonzo, even your Wikipedia link doesn't support your case, perhaps because it wasn't in Spanish..

The ICJ panel is made up of 15 judges and no two can come from one Country, none have the power of veto and a majority vote is sufficient for a ruling.

No, the reason Spain won't go there is because they know they will LOSE, just like at home, the Spanish only pay lip service to trivial things like justice, democracy, human rights and civilisation...

    @ 16 Gonzo22

PMSL, hahahaha, Did YOU read your own link? I think not. What an Idiot.

The only VETO power, is if an Enforcement action is put forward to the Security Council from the ICJ, to enforce the said ruling. THAT IS IT! the Security Council can then VETO the request, and not take action.

Learn to read ffs. better still, read your own link before posting.
