Aviation regulators have cleared the safe use of mobile devices during take-off and landing for US airlines. US carriers are expected to let passengers use smart phones, tablets, and e-book readers from gate to gate by the end of the year. Read full article

    Firstly I've never switched my mobile off on a flight...it goes on silent...
    Second I get great reception and Internet connections at 36.000 feet above the Ocean....Not!

    It's more for the landing and take off. In the air it's strictly Sat based. final approaches and take offs run off ground based systems.

    This is a long-time coming. People sneak kindles in takeoff and landing all the time. Those of us with iPads and similar discrete flat technologies should be able to use 'em so long as it doesn't “distract” us from flight attendant instructions (reading an off an iPad, fine; listening with headphones, still should be a no-no, and people yaking on cell phones I think should sometimes be banned even in the Skyclub, let alone in coach).
