In Gibraltar for the first international Literary Festival, Mr Chislett gave his opinion on the developing cross-border political strife and also commented on the current political climate surrounding Spain. I wonder if this will get as much coverage in Spain as an article in The Guardian calling for Gibraltar to be handed to the Spanish does.

    @2 'Where are the many reasons?'

    “Joint sovereignty would be rejected 100% [by Gibraltarians]”. I think we can stop there really. 300 Years+ trumps everything. Enough said.

    @4 But there are many reasons. You're right that the numbers of Gibraltarians who would support any form of Spanish sovereignty could probably be counted on two feet. Then there's Gibraltar's recognition of total Spanish corruption. Spain's useless “economy”. Gibraltar's right to self-determination as prescribed by the UN Charter. Would the UK hand Gibraltar to Spain if Spain relinquished Ceuta and Melilla? What are Ceuta or Melilla to Britain? Perhaps Morocco should offer an “argie” solution. Spaniards to go to mainland Spain and the territories taken over by Morocco.

    @4 FI_Frost

    Be fair, going on the last sovereignty referendum it'll only be rejected by 98.48% of Gibraltarians (although at least in that referendum the vote for anything granting Spain any sovereignty at all over Gibraltar was actually more than the blank and invalid vote count, which it wasn't in the previous referendum).

    I am all for even-handed treatment of all border issues ...

    so I would recommend that Spain takes to the United Nations the proposal that ALL borders should revert to that of 300 years ago.

    Spain will get a proper hearing, and may well get a lot of support from the hundreds of small nations that suffered 'boundary changes' over that period.
