Current events in Gibraltar and the continued incursions by Spanish vessels in the Rock's territorial waters were addressed in a strong piece in the Daily Telegraph by the former head of the Royal Navy, Lord Admiral West. This follows calls from British MPs last week for pressure to be brought on Spain within the context of NATO. Read full article

There are so many issues at play here. London will in the next few months tell Scotland that the rest of the UK will not enter into Sterling Zone with them should they choose independence. The ONLY other currency option Alex Salmond has is the Euro, but EU membership will depend on the agreement of ALL member states. The UK are banking on Spain refusing their membership out of fear of setting a framework for Catalan independence.

The Spanish are well aware of this, hence the reason that over the next 10 months they will be attempting to get away with as much as they can where Gibraltar is concerned while the UK's hands are tied. My guess is that after the independence vote in September 2014, regardless of the outcome, the UK will come crashing down on Spain.

The same that lost his ship Arcent in the Falklands/Malvinas war in 1982 sunk by the Argies?...

The same that after that was crying like a coward for that in front of any interview made by BBC?

Bloody ‘ell how this incompetent managed to arrive to Admiral?

    What a strange concept?

The RN promoting Captains who fight!

As opposed to promoting the chicken shits who run away and hide.

Dunderhead DanyBerger always has plenty to say.
You don't “arrive to” Admiral, dumkopf.
Anyway, where were your Admirals when our fleet arrived?
Hiding under their beds on the mainland, most likely.

@3 Yes. Same guy. But a few points. Commander West, as was, didn't “lose” his ship. It was sunk by warmongering, illegally invading and occupying argies. Other comparisons are worthwhile. After the attacks on HMS Ardent (F184), it was established that 22 crew members had been murdered by argies. HMS Yarmouth went alongside and the remainder of the crew were transferred with Commander West being the last person to leave the ship. When it came to the tin Belgrano, argie captain Bonzo made sure he got off leaving around 1,200 crew aboard. Despite having had 2 escort destroyers, neither assisted. They fled at top speed. And, talking about being tough, wasn't that the signal for the entire argie navy to flee back to port and never stir again?
@9 How much better you might do if you had either a brain or a mind. Politely worded, the European Commission's directive to Spain was to make better use of available space to increase the number of lanes to speed traffic flow. AND to adopt risk-profiling instead of blanket checks. If you class that as the EU siding with Spain, I would welcome the EU being against Spain. It would probably ask the UK to drop a nuke on Madrid. You puerile idiot!

    Aussie sunshine

First off, politicians don't always have to be whinging and whining in front of a camera like they excel at in Argentina and Spain. Sometimes quiet says more than blah blah blah whether in English or Spanish.

Secondly, I would have no problem living in Gibraltar, just as I had no problem living in the UK, US, Canada and Germany and from next year Colombia.

Thirdly, I am not into racial purity, so Spaniards can mate with whomever they wish. Considering Spain has a just experienced a fall in its population, then perhaps they should be “breeding” with other Spaniards.

And lastly, the majority of Gibraltarians speak Llanito as well as English and usually Spanish as well! So what if they majority will or already do speak Spanish. Speaking Spanish doesn't automatically make them part of Spain or even want to be part of Spain.

You have an extremely simplistic understanding of national identity - which is hardly surprising considering you live in Spain and yet still pine for my country.

Gibraltar 2013 = British and there is nothing Spain can do to change that.

No matter how hard it wants it.

And should Catalunya declare full independence, then Gibraltar will be the least of Spain's pain!
